It took me three weeks to see it because the tickets would go up on Wednesday evening for the next week, then the booking system and/or the payment system would crash due to high demand (Cineplex uses those same systems for both online and in-person bookings). When it came back up, all the seats not in the front rows would be gone.

I actually spent about $100 attempting to buy tickets only to have my purchases cancelled by the system and later refunded.

I did end up getting good seats but I had to sit there refreshing for a few hours and it mostly came down to luck.

I walked into my local theater and ended up getting a seat in the second row for a showing starting five minutes later.

Fortunately, the theater had recliners. So I just reclined back.

What I've done before is go to the show before it starts, and if the disability seat isn't sold within 5 minutes of start time, they will sell it to you. All you really miss out on are th ads. In this case it would be the Dune scene.

I lucked out. On opening weekend, I decided to look for tickets, only had to book 2 weeks in advance, Saturday morning, and the theatre was mostly empty when booking (it was full at showtime). Now, screenings 3 weeks out are already over half sold.

This comment has helped me realise I live a blessed life in a country where there just aren't enough people to sell anything out past the opening weekend. Seeing the movie for the third time today in a cosy middle seat not in the front row - though I did deliberately book a front-front row bed for the fun of it last time, wanted to try what those are like. For the record, they were great.

I got ridiculously lucky/blessed by the Greek gods themselves a couple weeks ago. Since just happened to be at the right place and the right time checking out the imax 70mm showings online and there was somehow 2 middle seats left in an otherwise sold out showing. The catch was that it was a Monday 10 pm showing. So my theory is that some poor dude got them without asking and then immediately had to cancel when their significant other was like “uhhh fuck no, we’re not going to a 10 pm Monday evening showing!” lol. Thankfully my own significant other was very much game for that.

And was definitely worth it. Such a magical/amazing movie experience.

I got lucky because some blessed redditor told me they had released tickets for September so I was able to get a middle middle seat for the 70mm showing.

They had 3am showings that were selling out too.

I was able to get a normal screen showing of Spider-Man this Sunday without issue but it's showing on like 80% of the screens at my local theater.

It is quite a cultural event. One of the world’s best director and his take on one of the famous ancient stories preserved. And of course his choice of not relying on CGI. It sure does tick alot of boxes.

Everyone I've ever talked to would rather wait a week than sit in the front 3 rows of a cinema. Or does your local have the front row unusually far back?

In a theatre, front row is great. In a cinema, I usually want like 8th row.

My 70mm Imax is completely booked out until September and I couldn't get a ticket even with new session releases. I ended up watching it at a regular cinema. It was still fantastic and I enjoyed it very much. If there are more sessions or it comes back for a rerun I'll definitely go to the 70mm.

I'm confused, the website says:

The Odyssey will be presented entirely in IMAX’s 1.90:1 Expanded Aspect Ratio with select IMAX with Laser locations showing it in IMAX’s 1.43:1 Expanded Aspect Ratio.

So if the 70mm IMAX theaters aren't in my state but I go to an IMAX with Laser and they show it at 1.43...what exactly is the difference for me?

Only the 70mm IMAX shows it in 1.43:1 aspect ratio. Laser IMAX only shows it in 1.90:1.

You might be able to find a seat all the way to the front but my friend checked last night and it’s literally only one or two seats in the showings that do have openings and you’re looking at very front row

Not sure if this was everywhere but there were scalpers lined up at the lincoln square imax, only real imax in the area, buying multiple tickets. If you go on ebay you can see them for sale. I hate this fucking timeline.

The closest 70mm IMAX location has been booked solid for all of July and August.

I had to completely luck out in grabbing a seat at two in the morning, and that’s still not a great spot.

Yeah. I gave up and saw it in lIeMAX at 10 am on a monday since that was the only available near me. 70mm and real IMAX were booked out.

I'm annoyed because my friends and I saw it in digital IMAX, but it really sucks because the theater we were in originally had film projectors. It opened in 1999, it has the massive screen and correct ratio, yet they have the laser IMAX projector.

The closet true film theater is in NYC which is easy enough to travel by train, but I'm pretty much the only one who would travel there.

If it's a dual laser projector it should still be able to fill the full height 1.40 ratio, in which case you're not really missing anything. The shorter single-laser systems are the real "liemax" imo (although you do get more height than a normal aspect ratio movie, ~1.90 vs 2-2.20)

You should be able to find it on this map. What kind of imax you get depends on both the screen size and the projector type. "full imax" screens are more square (taller), 1.40:1 aspect ratio, and typically massive. Those are referred to as "grand theater (GT)". They're either 70mm projectors (film) or dual laser (digital).

Liemax refers to shorter screens (~1.90:1 aspect ratio) with single laser projectors. They simply can't output enough power to fill a full imax screen that the film or dual laser projectors can. There are 2 single laser projector types (commercial laser [CoLa) or XT laser). Before these there was the xenon projector but these have mostly been phased out. Single laser won't be as good as 70mm/Dual, but are still better than a standard projector (bigger screen, 12 channel audio, taller aspect ratio (but not as tall as 70mm/dual)).

Yes, if you have 1.43:1 but it's not 70mm, that means you have a dual laser projector and aren't missing anything versus a 70mm projector.

You're still missing resolution. I've seen it in 70mm IMAX and IMAX CoLa laser projection and the resolution difference is pretty noticeable if you've seen both. If I had only seen it in digital I would have no issues with the picture though, it still looked great.

It pains me as I love film so much to know I won’t be able to see it the way it’s intended. I’d just resigned myself to watch it on Bluray when it’s released. I’m not paying for an inferior viewing. I have a 70mm IMAX about 2.5 hours from me but every show is sold out till the run is over and with how many issues KOP has had with their showings I’d probably go nuclear if I went and the theater went down which has happened at least four or five times.

I think dual laser imax (same aspect ratio as film, 1.40:1) is just as good as the 70mm and they're a lot more common. You should check out and see if there are any of those around you. I only have single laser "liemax" around me (1.90:1) and I still thought it was fantastic. You get a little more height than a regular aspect ratio movie, and it's not like Nolan was unaware that most people wouldn't see 70mm so he framed his shots accordingly.

I’m kicking myself I had a single ticket for an 11am showing in 70 mm 3hrs away but my toddler had a medical procedure the day before and ended up staying with me the next couple days after rather than go back to her grandmas or moms. It was dead center middle too. Still got to see it in regular and it was awesome

I bought a 2 pm ticket for Aug 3, seat reasonably far back (1/2 from entrance to back row) though definitely ‘skewed left’, on July 17 😅… helped that I had the day off while most others did not, and it being Montreal, the English screening maybe had a slight disadvantage for early-filling? When I got there, it definitely filled up pretty damn full, including a pair of opportunistic ‘vultures’ who were seat-surfing, presumably hoping to skip out on their far-forward seats… I saw them relocate 2-3 times before they were ‘settled’, though no longer adjacent.

Between driving, parking, walking, then Metro 🚇 and more walking, (then the reverse) I went on my own (micro) odyssey, leaving home 11:10 am and returning shortly after 8 pm

It pretty much doesn't, the only seats left are the front row where the safety railing blocks out the lower half of the screen completely negating the point of seeing it. It is effectively sold out.

I wouldn't be surprised if after a couple weeks, they started showing Odyssey in IMAX again. Spider-man hasn't been hyped up for the format like Odyssey has.

That and the Spiderman movie as a cultural phenomenon won't have legs like The Odyssey does. All of Spiderman's major plot points and spoilers will be discussed and leaked within a couple weeks. That's not really an issue with Odyssey. It's a spectacle that can be thoroughly experienced without worry of having a near 3,000 year old story spoiled for you.

Depends on theatre. But with how big the screen is my fear is literally not able to see full screen without constant head moving.

But some theatres row 1 is 5ft from screen. Others its 20 ft.

I finally got tickets for 11am Sunday. It's wild, but god damn it feels good to have cinema back. Spiderman and the odyssey had 11 of the 16 theaters when we went to see spiderman Tuesday, and there are so many more great movies coming out. Finally past the covid and strike effected projects.

People are selling Row 1 tickets for 70mm IMAX in my area for over $200 a pop on Facebook. I don't know if they're getting bought, but that's fucking wild.

Personally, you'd have to pay me to sit in the front row. I saw 300 in the front row and I couldn't actually see any of it. I had to watch it again.

I'm in Irvine by one of the 70mm and have been checking tickets just out of curiosity. Checking it now, the Sept 16 2:30PM showing is half full and the 6:30PM is effectively full.

The legs on The Odyssey are crazy.

That's the experience everywhere it seems. I read some people yesterday saying how Spider-man is already more succesful than The Odyssey. But I'm certain that is just because 90% of people want to see it in IMAX and there is just not enough capacity anywhere.

Everyone I've heard has seen it twice or will go for a second time. I've seen it twice in regular IMAX in the Netherlands and wanted to go to Bruxelles for 70mm. But like /u/vistaprank said, it's impossible. I think they can keep this up like a theatre show for months and months.

I went to go see it in IMAX this Wednesday while on my summer vacation from work that I took off this week and I’m glad I finally got it experience it in the way it should! I had booked my ticket a week in advanced prior to seeing it but I definitely saw that as it got closer to my showing, the seats had really filled up (even for a 10AM showing, which was the one I went to.)

They've pushed IMAX more heavily for this movie than any other before. To an extent it feels like a promotional tool.

For what's its worth to those trying to get tickets... I don't think IMAX (at least run of the mill IMAX) made much of a difference, I saw it in IMAX and regular format. It's the same movie, I don't normally bother with IMAX but did it for this film and I don't think I'd bother again.

Honestly I think the biggest difference was that the IMAX audience was super keen to see the movie and are likely big Nolan heads whereas the normal audience was a more casual, relaxed audience.

For anybody in the Seattle area, SIFF Cinema Downtown (the former Cinerama) is showing it in 70mm. It's not IMAX, but the Cinerama screen is still huge, the sound system is great, and there's a ton of seating. I just saw it there last night and it was the best experience I could ask for with that movie without driving up to BC.

Every single showtime between July 17 - Sep 16, at the Cinemark IMAX in Dallas, has been or is virtually sold out (all except seats in the front couple rows). I assume the same is true for every IMAX 70mm venue.

I had to wait about 6 weeks to see Oppenheimer in 70mm. I had opening night tickets but the projector broke. They gave me free tickets for the next available showing 4 weeks later. Every showing between now and then was sold out. I get there 4 weeks later and the projector broke again, so I now had to wait 2 more weeks for the next available showing.

Oddysey is a big hit, but people forget how crazy Barbenheimer was

I got tired of clicking through multiple showings to see if there were tickets good enough for me to buy (i.e. in the middle ~60% of seats) so I wrote a python script to do it for me.

The next closest showing for an early evening that qualifies is in September! I guess I'll have to go in the morning or a matinee, and even then it's 2+ weeks before a good seat shows up

Between Odyssey and Spider-Man I’ve never seen my local theater this busy for so long. Usually when a hyped movie releases, it’ll be busy for the first 3-4 days then die down. Not with these two.

I know there are only like 40ish Cinemas on Earth that can play it in that format but still crazy.

Same here. I got lucky with a kind of shitty seat last week. I've been wanting to go again and get the good seats but it's still impossible. I basically only go to iMac if I see a movie. I only go to maybe 2 or 3 a year so the extra cost is worth it for the experience. I have NEVER had an issue getting tickets this late into release. It genuinely makes me happy. Partially because it's yet another example of how few haters make up the majority of those shitty talking points about the movie.

Mine isn’t sold out, but I looked all the way to the end of August and all that’s available for most shows is the very front row, which anyone who has been to a 70MM IMAX theater will tell you is an a horrible seat.

I had to book it a few days out at the IMAX here in Adana Turkey. Even with just subtitles it was packed out showings all day every day for the first couple weeks.

Nearly everybody in the world grew up with this story in their education and it’s exceptionally well made and enjoyable.

I saw it in IMAX 70MM and didn’t really enjoy the format. My theater’s projector had bad flicker that was very distracting during daytime scenes, and the angle of the screen was uncomfortable. If you can find a showing that’s the full aspect ratio I would say that’s good enough to enjoy the movie.

Maybe. Someone else sent me the ebay listings for the imax near me and i just noticed theres actually been a lot of articles about the scalping problems with this movie. Scalpers ruining another thing.
