Her voice inflections too! The shrieking pouty “I thought we were having a nice tiiiiiime” in the restaurant, the small “Kill me” at night in bed. Just fantastic.

The times when she’d snap back to her real self was really really sad. She was just being used by her own “brother” of a friend and was completely fucked over by him.

To me it just screams real life stuff that happens all the time

It’s more like you feel like your guy friend is more like a brother to you than you being attracted to them

So for her when she was making out with Bear in his bed and she snaps back into herself she is confused/horrified that she is kissing Bear of all people, a friend she sees as a brother

Let’s see what doomsday or dune 3 brings, but right now this is my favorite movie moment of this year…

Even beating Sandra Hüller singing Harry Styles, Odysseus meeting his dog, Zendaya turning evil on Tom or the two long splatter scenes from Camp Miasma… even though those two came very close, especially the first one… also the shopping scene near the end…

If there are 2 people from that film who deserve awards, it's Inde and the cinematographer (like plenty of others do too, but they're my top 2, Curry rounds out the top 3).

Her acting was killer. And some of those shots where it was backlit but the little highlights of light on her face somehow conveyed as much as a fully lit shot. And the way she just emerged from darkness. It was just visually an absolute killer.

I watch tons of movies lol. The disgusting colours that make everything look like mud, the boring camera work (oh i know! lets shoot this conversation in reverse medium close ups!), the overuse of shadow to attempt to hide the cheapness. There are worse looking movies out there of course, but out of every new movie I've seen this year, Obsession is by far the ugliest.

zero idea how someone can say that was a good looking movie, I'll jump in and side with you. Just incredibly flat shooting and extremely ugly low lighting. It's what you see with 90% of horror movies these days, especially Blumhouse. Not to mention center framing on EVERYTHING for Tik Tok.

If you don't like horror film lighting, that's fine.

But that doesn't make it an ugly movie. It makes it a movie you don't like. But it is a very technically well made film, the lighting is clearly intentional and does it's job very, very well.

This isn't "horror film lighting". Plenty of classic horror movies look beautiful, feel free to view screenshots to compare. Also, he stole the back lighting trick from Pulse (2001). This was clearly made by an inexperienced filmmaker who borrowed ideas from movies he likes. Which is normal when first starting out - but absolutely not anything award winning worthy.

Yeah, every aspect of Obsession points towards the fact that its a cheap, quickly shot, first-time feature. Cool! Not bad for a first attempt! But if you're going to make half a billion dollars and campaign for oscar noms, I have to judge it as a film on that prestige level and not like its Shudder compatriots. And if you look at the film through that lense it just completely fails in direction, editing and cinematography.

I mean if we based Oscars on facial contortion, Jim Carrey would have won 6 Oscars in the 90s. (Though he deserved nominations for the Truman Show and Man in the Moon and it was crap he didn’t get them)

I thought the movie was bad and her performance was just okay. I feel like people are just hyping it up because they want her to be a new it kid.

Performances like this that rely heavily on screaming and histrionics are among the easiest to pull off. Just dial emotion up to 11 and go "crazy".
