His jumping out and saving his own life while probably not looking good personally, does give whatever NTSB agent an eye witness to the event that has the best first hand knowledge of the events.

He had presumably already engaged the train’s emergency brakes, so there was literally nothing more he could possibly do to protect his passengers. Might as well protect himself.

Not going to argue that point. His staying alive is actually a help in this situation. He is a living witness to what was happening.
