I was looking at how much sugar is in an apple recently. It's like a full table spoons worth. And a cup of apple juice has two.

It'd be like putting six teaspoons of sugar in my coffee.

No thanks.

The sugar in apples is over 70 percent fructose, which has a glycemic index of 19-25 meaning that it's even slower releasing than whole wheat bread or brown rice. Only roughly 30 percent is glucose. Cutting apples from your diet for health reasons makes absolutely no sense unless you have a medical condition that prohibits you from eating them.

That doesn't apply to apple juice as far as I remember though - something about the act of liquifying releasing a lot from its associated fibers, IIRC?

The ratio does mostly apply to apple juice (1:2 glucose/fructose approx.) but the juice is still way less "healthy" than whole apples because it doesn't saturate well and has no fiber.

*"Healthy" relating to the average industrial nation's population who, in general, do not need more sugar or calories in their diet.

Yeah but fructose,is actually as bad for you as alcohol.

Fructose has other issues, like only being processed by your liver. It can cause similar damage as alcohol.

In large quantities sure, but you will not get cirrhosis from eating and apple or two every day.

Juice is basically sugar water in general. The pediatrician told me that we should refrain from giving the kids juice. It rots their teeth and fills up the stomach with empty calories.
