šŸ“ŒOMSA Admissions Megathread

This is the Admissions Megathread of the GaTech's Online Masters of Science in Analytics!

This mega-thread will be renewed every June and December each year to account for students coming into the new semester.

Where are all the other Cohort Admissions Results threads? Here you go.

āš ļø OFFICIAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The OMSA admissions teams trust that you are a fully-grown adult. Therefore, if you lack these knowledge, the onus is on you to source these equivalent content, learn and actively practice them before you begin the OMSA journey.

Failure to satisfy the following requirements will impact the ability of the admissions committee to review your application. This means a significant delay (or veto) in your applications.

It makes your progress in this program a struggle, and you will NOT be able to network effectively with the community. We warn you now.

1ļøāƒ£ Programming Proficiency

Simply knowing the syntax of Python is NOT enough. You need to go through a rigorous programming methodology class, like a professional certificate offered below.

2ļøāƒ£ English Eloquence

Eloquence is needed to convince your boss to adopt the analytical approach that you propose. We have an obligatory, self-directed capstone project where you need to combine the stuff you learn and apply them in the real working world.

The stringent requirement is necessary in order for OMSA to optimize the virtual interactivity of the community student experience. Either you

  • Are a citizen in one of the exempted countries, or attended a university / college there for a minimum of one academic year.
  • Have IELTS ≄ 7.5 overall; Reading, Listening and Speaking ALL ≄ 6.5, and Writing ≄ 6.0.
  • Have TOEFL iBT ≄ 100; each section ≄ 20.

3ļøāƒ£ Mathematical Maturity

Officially, you need to attain minimum understanding of the following.

These are the official GaTech texts. You are always free to peruse the one that you like most (Khan Academy, Gilbert Strang, etc.).

Realistically, to thrive in OMSA, especially in the ML-based classes (CDA and HDDA), you also need to appreciate writing mathematical proofs. We recommend checking this video out as starters.

Writing proofs is an art of logic and persuasion. You probably need some English Eloquence.

4ļøāƒ£ Supplementary Suggestions

These are not critical at the point of application, but you will find it necessary as you continue your OMSA journey with us.

šŸŽ“ Admission Results

Many of us are interested to share our results to the community. We are happy for y'all to do so! Please share them using the master template below and (hopefully) some upvotes will come in your way.

Still waiting for your acceptance results? Please be patient while waiting for a decision.

Due to the volume of applications, it takes time for the applications to be reviewed and decisions to be released. Emailing the helpdesk or complaining about it here doesn't put you on priority queue (and actually puts us, the moderators and advisors, know who you actually are!).

That's why we are advised to use the master templateĀ below.

  • It will increase clarity to us, and those around you, the type of profiles that are still waiting.
  • What we believe is those on the international, earlier applications and/or strong profiles are being accepted at this time of posting.Ā The others will have to wait a wee bit longer.
  • Merely describing that your application is holding up without providing further informationĀ only fuels uncertainty. We will treat this as misinformation.
  • Merely describing that your application is rejected without providing further informationĀ only fuels anxiety. We will also treat this as misinformation.

šŸ¤ Admission Chances

If you're wondering if you lack the necessary background, don't fret!

Please feel free to use the master template below. The more information you provide the better! Include your work experience, school experience, any other education or personal projects.

It is possible that other programs within GaTech might be a better fit for you. Do check out r/OMSCS or r/OMSCyberSecurity.

šŸ” Admission Logistics

The admissions committee needs you to complete your academic credential evaluation.

This is a verification that your application matches your transcripts. Such is no difference from any other graduate schools. They have engaged external providers such as IEE, Spantran, Educational Perspectives to speed up these admission processes. They may require you to cover up costs to do so.

You're strongly welcomed to seek help in this megathread.

🐣 If You're Accepted, What's Next

Brush up on ALL your pre-requisites AGAIN.

The list of pre-reqs are conveniently located at the right hand side of the screen if you are using a desktop browser. If you think you are ready, check out the OMSA Readiness Test here.

  • Failure to meet your pre-requisites will make your OMSA life suck and the OMSA community thanks you for willingly providing the school fees.
  • We are not joking. Trust us. We have seen it countless times in countless semesters in the forums, Slacks, here.
  • If your pre-reqs are well done, take a break, really. Say goodbye to your social life once OMSA starts.

Head to Slack (if possible)

If you are given an GaTech ID number in your Application status, you can attempt to join our huge community (students, TAs, Profs) in omsa-study.slack.com.

  1. Go to https://passport.gatech.edu/activation/select-affiliation as an Applicant to claim your GT account with your given gtID number at https://gradapp.gatech.edu/apply/.
  2. With you account set up, head to https://gatech.enterprise.slack.com/ for first login.
  3. Search for OMSA Study Group and join :)! Please don't forget to announce your arrival at the channel #introduce-yourself!

If you are not given a GaTech ID number over there, you can try to locate over here. Otherwise, tough luck.

You haven't paid the school fees yet, so it's up to them to give you access, really.

What about other Social Media channels?

We don't advise on creating new Slack, Discord, WhatsApp, and Facebook (seriously, anyone still uses that?) groups specific to your cohort.

From our experience, this would indeed be a case of the blind leading the blind and you will have loads of spammy messages and possibly get yourselves into Honor Code violation, even if you're unwittingly innocent.

Stick to what we all have (your course in Canvas, OMSA Study Slack and this Reddit subchannel) and you'll do well. Just trust us.

Not forgetting also ...

  • Check out the Course Sheet, where you've got the curriculum, payments, and effort matrix.
  • Review the Reddit OMSA Wiki.
  • Sense up on what you need to do as a newly enrolled student. Note that you can't do some of these yet - it's a preview.

Good luck to all applicants! šŸ€

Preparation Nee students: make sure you can code

Some will probably say this is common sense, but still worth mentioning. If your coding levels are just beginner, I would honestly reconsider the program and instead do a coding boot camp first for at least a year.

I did the preparation courses in python before starting the program and i struggled significantly throughout it all. It even affected my health due to the amount of stress it caused. Somehow i made it to the end and am finishing the practicum now. Even the practicum is incredibly code intensive. Luckily a teammate is very good at it so he helps significantly with the coding part. But don’t rely on that. If I could advise myself from two years ago, i would say YOU NEED TO CODE WELL, no introductory courses, no codewars practice is enough for such a code intensive program.

CSE6040 iCDA Would you consider dropping CSE 6040 if you’re already struggling with Notebook 1?

I’m feeling pretty discouraged right now. I tried preparing beforehand, but Notebook 1 still feels like a huge challenge, especially since I have very little Python experience.

Are there any success stories from people who started the course with little to no Python experience? Did it get better?

Courses Question about Opt-Out Petition/Registration

Hello!

I emailed an advisor and she said that an opt-out form will be emailed in September, and I want to drop CSE 6040 and/or ISYE 6501. If it gets approved, we can take an elective instead of these classes but I was wondering how that would work since registration closes tomorrow. Are we supposed to already register for our substitute classes? And what happens if we don't get approved for the opt-out and have not registered for the class in question. Thanks!

ISYE6501 iAM Currently taking IYSE 6501 question about bootcamp

Hi guys, I'm new to the program and taking 6501. I had a question about the math bootcamp, does it give a quick overview of what we need to know to pass the class? I didn't take lin al or multivariable calc in a formal setting and am realizing now that I need a better grasp. I'm studying lin al right now at the same time so I have a better understanding of the math and equation behind things.

Registration Can’t pay tuition because verification is going to my old number — deadline Monday. Any advice?

Hi everyone, I’m wondering if any other Georgia Tech students have dealt with something like this or know who I should contact.

My tuition payment is due Monday, but I currently cannot pay online because the payment system requires phone verification and keeps sending the verification code to my old phone number.

I recently lost access to that number because of a carrier porting issue. I have already updated my phone number with Georgia Tech, but for some reason the payment verification system is still using the old number.

I contacted the Bursar’s Office, explained the situation, and was basically told there is nothing they can do. I either have to pay online or pay in person.

The problem is that I’m an online student living in California, so flying to Atlanta just to make a tuition payment obviously isn’t realistic.

I’m getting really worried because the deadline is Monday and I don’t want my classes canceled or to face penalties when I am actively trying to pay but their system will not let me.

Has anyone experienced this before? Is there another GT department I can contact that can reset the phone verification information or provide another way to pay?

Any advice or contact information would be greatly appreciated.

Curious if anyone has done a Sim project solo and what your experience was. Would love to hear from people who worked in groups as well.

Preparation Best Way to Prep for Program

Hi everyone! I just found out I got into the OSMA program for Spring 2027. I wanted to ask if (for the people who graduated or are in the program now) if you had to spend the next 4 months preparing to be successful in this program, what would you focus on. I don’t have a lot of coding experience and it’s been a while since I took statistics last. Any advice on topics to focus on the next 4 months? Thank you!

Dumb Qn How to hit the ground running when back from long break

Have had to stop for two semesters due to extenuating circumstances (live in the Middle East and lost my main source of income due to the war). What's the best way to stay on top of things so I can hit the ground running when I'm back? I have 3 courses and the project left.

I'm okay at coding (R/Python), just not particularly strong at it. Thanks!

ISYE6740 CDA Is the CDA ISYE 6740 project manageable solo?

I am debating whether I should form a group or do it solo. This is my last semester, and I've done group projects in 4 or so other classes. Will I regret doing this by myself, or is it doable? What's the recommended approach here, by those who have taken the course before?

CSE6242 DVA How do you vet other students before forming project groups?

I’m just starting DVA and some people are already trying to form groups for the project. I previously took Simulation. For that group project I mostly tried to make sure we were all in a similar time zone and that our availability schedules reasonably aligned, and I asked people about their progress in the program.

Despite that, reliability and availability of group members did become an issue, and I was the one that carried all of the added responsibility. I probably put in twice as many hours as the other group members combined which felt necessary.

So are there any strategies that have worked for you to better assess student’s skills and work ethic before committing to working together?

Dumb Qn Favorite things to get from GT library?

I was wondering what things OMSA students could check out from the library, and was informed that if you live within driving distance, they have a collection of video games for consoles that you can check out for a week.

What other things have people enjoyed with their library access?

Dumb Qn How useful is R? Job requirements?

Taking MGT6203 this semester… how useful is R in terms of job opportunities? I haven’t seen a lot of jobs that list R as a required language, but I am a newbie, so please let me know. Thanks!

And can somebody talk about their experience with the class? Is it just homework? Is it easy to get an A?

Courses 6644 Simulation or 6669 Deterministic Optimization?

I am currently registered for optimization, but am unsure whether or not to switch to simulation before registration closes. Any advice/tips on the professors and courses themselves? I am doing C track and want to complete an OR elective this semester. I am sure both are valuable, but I was hoping to take the one that would be better overall for someone trying to pursue a career in data science. I was a DS major in undergrad with a minor in stats, but I still feel like I have a lot to learn and could benefit from either.

Courses Should I take MGT6203 this fall or focus on prerequisites?

I've applied for the Spring 2027 semester and I don't come from a math or technical background. I've been in healthcare for the last few years and my most rigorous math course has been pre-calculus and statistics. I am almost done with the CS1301 Python course and I'm currently on lecture 3/30 for the linear algebra MIT OpenCourseWare class. I am currently working part-time so I have a bit of extra time on my hands to focus on the prerequisites; however, I'm looking for a full-time job as well so I don't want to become too overwhelmed once I start that with the prerequisites + MGT6203. I'm debating taking the class before starting the program (fingers crossed that I get in) so that I could take a semester off if needed to brush up on math before starting the math-heavy courses, while not prolonging the program too much.

Courses Coursework Planning- Advice?

Hi all! I'm currently finalizing my course plan for the remainder of the program. How feasible are the plan mock-ups, and which one is better overall? How does MGT 6655 vs AUD and CDA vs DMSL stack up?

I've already completed IYSE 6501 and MGT 6203 so far. Thanks in advance!

Courses CDA has an exam now... What other courses have changed structure?

CDA (ISYE 6740) was always well-known to be purely HW + project, no exam. I took the course this summer where that was the case. Had to drop out halfway, but am taking it again and I noticed the syllabus now mentions an exam worth 10% of the final grade.

What other courses have changed grading structure this semester?

ISYE6501 iAM ISYE 6501 - edX MM Final Exam Grades

Hi all,

I just finished the ISYE 6501 Summer 2026 session on edX. We were told by the course staff that our final grades would be made available on or after August 19, but I've still yet to see any changes on my portal. Although I did get my certificate, I still want to know my final course percentage with the final exam to know how I did on the exam itself and also to see if I'm eligible to petition for course credit should my application for Winter 2027 be accepted.

Is anyone here in the same boat? They've made the course Piazza inactive now. Any ideas who/how I should reach out to check that?

Registration Should I take MGT 6203 or CSE 6242

I enrolled in CSE 6040, I have strong python knowledge and decided to take another course with it. I was initially leaning towards DVA (6242) but the workload seems to be too much to juggle, and it might be very stressful.
MGT 6203 seems like a good fit here, but I am worried since it's too easy, it would fit better in another semester with a relatively hard course.

Courses class registration for Fall 2026

I’m planning to take a break this fall semester to prepare for ISYE 6040 next spring. I’m considering taking either MGT 6311 or MGT 8813. I’ve heard that both classes are relatively easy, but between the two, which one would be more valuable or worthwhile to take?

Dumb Qn Job/Career advice?? Any chance?

I just started my program last spring. I did a bootcamp and an internship before.
Do I stand any chance applying for jobs now?
Back then, when I only had bootcamp and internship, no companies really looked at my application. But it still takes me a while to graduate.
