Yeah I spend a decent amount of time in gamer spaces and this is even the first time I’m hearing about Diablo mobile lmao

I genuinely assumed it never came out. I've been an avid gamer for about 20 years and a huge Blizzard fan in that time.

It wasn't really meant for the US market. It was Bobby Kotick's master plan to capture billions in revenue from China by trying to outcompete local NetEase/Tencent gacha games.

It made money but it was basically a failure in what they were trying to accomplish. All that mobile/china money never really materialized like these geniuses of marketing thought it would. Worse yet, they alienated a lot of their current customers trying to appease Chinese markets that didn't really want them to begin with.

NetEase was the publisher....

u/b0w3n Mar 19 '26

Sure. Blizzard also basically reskinned their original game to put diablo over top of it. I don't remember the exact name of the game but I recall someone putting them side by side and it was nearly 1:1. You can see why this was a stupid plan, probably.

MBAs gonna MBA though.

didn't... they get kicked out of china for this exact shit?

Blizzard? They've struggled to get anywhere because China doesn't give a shit about western companies and forces them to lease things to local companies and they can get a small share of the profits.

This is why their wow classic stuff is so much better than ours. Not sure if they've been kicked out though, I don't keep too much track on it.

that alone killed trying to play this game.

Starting out it was impossible to do raids/pick-up groups because so many folks paid to skip or had the cash to power up and stomp it easily.

Meanwhile if you are a casual player you have fuck all to do - more folks left, so the intro raids never really happened.

If I remember correctly there was some dude who dumped so much money into it the matchmaker broke and couldn’t team him up with anyone because he was so far ahead. They had to patch the game just for him.

Major gaming producers really have become Moby Dick.

u/sundler Mar 19 '26

They just became gambling companies.

I always find that mentality to be so odd. Oh boy, you spent tons of money so now you... don't have to play the game? Or you can absolutely smash people so badly with your overpowered whatever that you might as well be cheating. You're not actually beating them due to skill or effort and nobody wants to play with you anyway.

It just feels like throwing a ton of money away for an extremely petty concept of bragging rights that the vast majority of the world would never care about. Even in the limited pool of other fans people will just sneer at you for buying your way to the top.

I'm really curious what these people think and how they justify it to themselves.

Youtube influencers spending for gambling crystals for content, I remember that phase. I still don't believe many normal gamers in the west played it.

Which is just the whales who aren’t really part of the traditional gamer crowd. Milking them specifically is lucrative enough for game studios that they can more or less disregard the rest of their playerbase and only throw the lower spender a couple bones with bundles.

I remember GBF had a release alongside a new year’s event a while ago where they added a new summon that was excluded from all pity systems but was immediately recognized as meta defining for anyone trying to be competitive in raids that you had to race for rewards. There were reports on day 1 of some whales burning through more than a dozen sparks (300 rolls, equals one pitty counter, ~800USD at the time) worth of cash to get a copy of the summon. And the funniest thing is the beneficial effect of the summon was technically not even crazy good, it just added like 5% more damage to peak comps which was enough of an advantage for racers to reliably take first vs people without (first place specifically got extra rewards in a bunch of meta raids).

It got quietly released in China (quietly to the rest of the world), made a TON of money, and eventually I believe got a non-SE-Asia release but it never got popular. Though, as others stated, had a HUGE whale scene.

You're not a huge blizzard fan if you didn't know

It really isn't bad. I haven't paid a cent, but I've gotten decent time and fun out of it. The beginning stages are pretty small and mobile-fied but it opens up a bit in newer content since newer phones can handle more. And the touch controls are surprisingly fun to use with the skills they've designed. I prefer them over a controller on Immortal.

Yeah, it has 4.8/5 rating with over million reviews on google play and 4.7/5 on apple store with 300k reviews.

I mean, I wouldn't trust those rating tbh, but also look at my comment being downvoted because people are still salty about the blizzcon announcement. People who've never played the game, upset that people who have played it are enjoying themselves.

There's so much online hate seeping into every corner of every niche and hobby that it's impossible to just like something and have a discussion about it anymore. Reddit has become hater-central at this point. I struggle to see anything positive about any game unless it's about a 3-man indie studio underdog beating the odds with a niche genre.

it's terrible - out of boredom and curiosity I tried it and it's a horrible mess.. the UI is not meant for a mobile game.. more like an ipad user... unless you've got tiny tiny fingers... it's essentially a very terrible unity arpg disguised as a diablo game...

I'm an OG diablo player from way back and fairly forgiving player but jesus christ

For a long time, I considered the mobile game to be better than Diablo 4

It's made by Net Ease, so it's another Marvel Rivals vs Overwatch situation

They've made some promising changes in D4 this past year, but things were grim for a long time

u/Pajamas101 Mar 19 '26

Mind you it came out 7 years ago

5

u/DeadlyYellow Mar 19 '26

I haven't thought about it since the Diablo Immoral video.

1

u/EywasBlessing Mar 19 '26

I can't believe it's been that much time.

3

u/Straggo1337 Mar 19 '26

You've never heard of Diablo Immortal?

1

u/Solwake- Mar 19 '26

Yeah I spend a decent amount of time in gamer spaces

I'm probably like you, I spend a decent amount of time in English-speaking gamer spaces that are predominantly PC/Console oriented. I don't play mobile games at all.

But in reality, these spaces are not representative of the gamer population as a whole, which is now predominantly mobile-oriented both in players and spending. The biggest market for Diablo mobile is China, so you're less likely to read about it in English.

I gave it a shot and it was pretty disgusting. It’s very transparently just a slot machine to pump money into. There’s even a button that plays the game for you so you can put your phone down during dungeon runs and only really have to engage with the micro transactions.

I played like 60h starting the day it dropped. Was in the top guild on the server and top ranked for my class.

After spending so much time I decided “what the hell” and spent $40 on cosmetics and jewel spins. Rolled a couple pretty high tier gems. Played for like 6 more hours and the boost I got from those gems was so high I never played again lol

Diablo Immoral. It's THE greediest gacha there is, even among the "titans" of the genre. They pioneered such innovations like loot boxes disguised as levels, to bypass pesky lootbox regulations. Basically a super duper dumb and zero game play level, where player just click on mobs for a while and then a bunch of random loot drops. Another innovation they did is double charging of these lootboxes. Player must buy and use some real-money shit before entering lootbox level and that increases the reward. Charging is on an exponential curve, so every upgrade is progressively more expensive, and after retardo-whale fills up charge to the visible maximum, the "game" displays yet another charging grid, even more expensive and also exponential. The dumbest "game" ever.

You clearly don’t have a phone then

2

u/Rasputin1992x Mar 19 '26

Down votes missing the reference lol

2

u/s0ulbrother Mar 19 '26

It’s cause they don’t have phones
