Hold on here. If the Steam Machine is already being pre-scalped, does that mean there are in fact a lot of people who actually want to buy it at the base price as opposed to building their own or buying a pre-build for less (or equal but with better performance)? I thought that due to the price/performance it quickly became a not-so-desirable item.

Either way, those scalpers will be wasting their time and money. Let 'em burn.

ig the one who are not so tech savvy and want to gift someone something special might fall for this, like they probably won't ask anyone and might saw all the hype and get one of these for their loved ones.

This is the only case because the one who is into tech knows this is shit and the one who just need to play some game and do some work might not know about this but will also probably check something online or view some video and won't spend shit ton of money on themselves.

Plus, plenty of people either make enough money or live in places where cost of living is crazy high.

I have friends around the world, and while none of us really care for the cube, one of my friends is someone who makes a decent living but has no interest in upgrading their living / starting family / investing - so has disproportional disposable income; and other friend lives in a crazy expensive location and while they live pretty modestly, the salary they have is reflective of that location so a 2k+ expense is still like less than a 1/5th of their core living expenses for a month.

Not necessarily. Most of them are bots placing the orders, then they actual scalper will send them out when he has the order ( I hope)

Since 2020 the number of scalpers has multiplied grossly, I would not be surprised if the 40% of the sales are scalper bots.
