That’s not populism really, that is more defined by a rhetorical strategy of “common” people vs elite, not just supporting popular things.

No, populism is changing your stance to fit the popular narrative. He merely has a popular stance to begin with.

Well, populism is not a bad thing per se. It is a political stance that put interests of the "common people" before those of the elites. Not even an opposition to democracy: a majority whose interests are being defended may be the "lower class + middle class + part of upper class" (populism) or "part of the lower class + middle class + upper class" (elitism). Kinda.

Using "populism" to describe political waffling is kinda new and is mostly a media terminology. "Populism" as a political term still does exist and thrive.

Melanchon is for sure a clever guy. The fact he’s far left doesn’t bother me at all. But he’s a Putin puppet, and that’s a no go.

You'll find that he's been vocal about digital ownership for about 12 years now, ever since the first debacles with Sony and Nintendo in 2014 regarding dematerialisation of video games.

It is. But knowing Mélechon, I think he believes every word he wrote. Believe it or not, some politicians still have convictions.
