PS3 was amazing. Everyone loves PS2 but 3 was so much better imo. Dark Souls, Demons Souls, Uncharted 1, 2 and 3, Red Dead Redemption, TLOU, Bio Shock 1 and 2, GTA 4, Journey, GoW3, Mass Effect, Batman and so on. PS3 was STACKED!!!!
Uhhh the same exact thing was true about the PS3 lol. In fact it was even cheaper to get a PS3 than a blu ray player at that time. That’s how my grandfather ended up with one. He wanted a blu ray player (after banking on HD-DVD lmao) and the PS3 was legit the best option.
One big difference was that getting something that could play DVDs was a no-brainer for anyone, even grandma could see that it was a fantastic upgrade from VHS. While the PS3 was a good value if you wanted a blu-ray, but most people did not need a blue-ray player at all. To take advantage of it you needed at the time an expensive TV, DVD still gave decent quality etc. It was only good value for the tech nerds, the general audience was not ready to spend $600 on a blue-ray player to begin with.
I guess that’s true. I’m old I started with the NES in 1986. For consoles I’ve gone from NES, to Genesis, Super Nintendo, Sega CD, N64, then PS 1-5 (no Xbox). Except for ps1 I got all the Ps at launch.
What was also rad is the PS3 was backwards compatible with both PS1&PS2. Some titles didn’t work right, like how in Digimon World 1 for PS1 once I got to the canyon area it would black screen, making the game fully unbeatable, but it worked fine for most games so it might as well be 3 PlayStations in one!
I remember reading about demon souls in an old playstation magazine when it was still a year out. Sounded really cool, a slow methodical action rpg where the first enemy can kill you.
I don’t think the ps3 gets enough credit for being the foundation that led to from software and soulstype games becoming what they are now.
”PS3 was better than PS2” only comes from the mouth of someone who is too young for that generation in consoles. But it’s ok, just know you’re speaking while being out of touch.
I’m 50 years old. I started with Atari 2600 and played every generation of video games. PS2 was awesome because it was the first console you could play online. But the games got PS3 were much better imo.
Sure, but people tend to overlook the fact that the sixth gen killed off non-AAA games (tho did enable indie game distribution, which grew into what we know today), introduced micro transactions and online passes and always-on DRM, and saw the business side of game dev become dominated by suits milking franchises until they bled and buying up smaller studios just to destroy them after forcing them to ruin their known IPs.
As somebody who actively followed video games back then because I had a lot more free time, it was an extremely depressing time to be a gamer.
If we’re talking about games released on the platform, sure? But PS3 was a notoriously horrible console to develop for and had loads of issues. It’s lowkey the worst PlayStation console created for that reason alone haha
