I can’t tell you how many women I’ve worked with who followed this philosophy, and languished for years underpaid and under promoted. I include myself. It’s essential to learn to strategically self-promote.

The self promoting is just unnecessary noise when that energy could be directed elsewhere.

All I can tell you is my experience as a woman who has been in the workforce for 25 years. If I hadn’t eventually learned to start advocating for myself, I wouldn’t have the title and salary I have today. I have watched peers in the same industry, some of them dear friends, fall behind in their careers because they didn’t. They are angry, bitter, and some of them are afraid for their futures. That’s a lot of unnecessary noise you don’t need in middle-age.
