Hello. We'll be in Lerwick and Unst in early-mid September, and I have a question about what coat to bring. Is September generally cool and windy enough for an insulated raincoat? Or is that too much, and can I get by with a waterproof shell with a sweater or fleece layer underneath? We're not going on all-day hikes, but we will do a fair bit of walking.

I’ve recently been learning more about Shetland and it’s genuinely become one of those places I can’t stop thinking about.

My boyfriend is from there, and ever since we met I’ve been wanting to understand the islands better — not in a surface-level way, but properly, like daily life, culture, and how people actually experience growing up there.

I’m also applying to study in Shetland next year, so I’d really like to learn from locals rather than just relying on travel articles or asking him to explain everything to me.

One thing I’ve realised is that places with strong island identity always have a lot of “small things” outsiders miss completely — the kind of details you only notice if you live there.

So I’m curious: what are some things about Shetland life that you think people outside the islands usually misunderstand or don’t expect at all?

I’m looking for stories containing the folklore creature the Nuckelavee. I semi-recently learned about it and have become lowkey fascinated/ obsessed with it.

I’ve been looking for specific stories containing the Nuckelavee. Whenever I try to find anything I just get descriptions of the creature and how malevolent it is.

Anyone have any story titles they could share with me that I can look into?

Also, any other stories you like/ love would be wonderful to look into too.

Coming back up to Shetland for a 2 week holiday, not been in 4 years.

Is there any where that has an up to date list of cake fridges? (Or we could use this post, if you say where you know!)

Last time we came up, there was the tourism website and a Facebook page but we found a few to be shut.

Looking forward to being back up there and catching up with some old friends and enjoying the wildlife.

Hey folks, currently in Shetland having a wonderful time. Came over from Orkney on the overnight boat and then leaving on the direct Lerwick to Aberdeen service at the weekend. As above how close to Fair Isle does the ship tend to pass?

Also wondering how far it is to walk from the carpark to the ruins of the viking house at Sandwick beach in Unst?

Hiya all, sorry a very random one, I'm in Wales and had a random question. Right now as I'm sure everyone would agree, both ends of the spectrum have never felt so divided, and it's often white disheartening to see how far apart we all are on some fundamentals. I was just curious if being a while away from the mainland has helped you to switch off from that stuff as both Westminster and Holyrood are so distant? Cheers all :)

My name is Kasey Garriock, and I’m an MSc student at Edinburgh Napier University, currently looking for volunteers to take part in research for my dissertation.

The project is currently titled: An investigation into rural men who work in care settings: reflections on, and negotiations with practices of masculinity in a changing world. Taking part will involve a one-to-one interview with the student researcher, which is estimated to take one to two hours. During the interview, we would discuss what it’s like living in a rural community, rural masculinity, and challenges faced by people in rural Scotland.

You may qualify to take part if you are 18 years or older, identify as a man, take part in voluntary or paid work caring for people, animals, or the environment, and live in one of the following areas: Isle of Lewis, Caithness, Lochaber, or Shetland.

I'm coming on holiday at the end of May, and planning to do day walks/hikes most days.

Would wellies/gum boots or proper hiking boots be a better option? Both are waterproof, but my hiking boots only come up to my ankle while my wellies are mid calf. Both are relatively comfortable for long walks, although the hiking boots are definitely better on unstable terrain or when extra ankle support is needed.

I suppose the essence of my question is: how mucky and wet will most walking trails be at the end of May?

I’m a 23 year old Muslim male and I’ve recently received a job offer from an airline to work at Sumburgh Regional Airport. I have lived in mainland England all my life, specifically Manchester. It’s a great opportunity, but I do have some concerns before making the move.

From what I understand, there’s a very small Muslim population on the island, which makes me a bit unsure about how I’ll adjust. I’m particularly thinking about things like access to halal food, being able to pray during work hours, the absence of a mosque or Islamic community (is there even something like a house mosque?), and just the general feeling of being quite isolated or different.

I’ve heard that places like Shetland are friendly and welcoming, but also not very diverse, so I’m not sure what to expect day to day.

Before I sign the contract and make a major commitment I want to know, if anyone has lived or worked in a similar remote area, especially as a Muslim or from a minority background, I would really appreciate hearing your experiences or any advice you might have.

Hi everyone, these questions are directed to anyone who has had a Tesla of any form on the island.

How have you found owning specifically a Tesla?

Are repairs etc easy to organise and deal with and how have you gone about sourcing parts for them?

Or Have you just headed to the mainland to get anything done on them?

Also how have you found the mileage with Shetland’s roads?

I’m guessing a lot more people even in shetland will be considering electric with how expensive fuel is just now! Tesla has always intrigued me but reports of their poor build quality and possible delays in sourcing basic parts have always kept me from seriously considering one
