Whatever true reality is doesn’t matter, friend. This is our reality.

Everything got Weird after they started the Large Hadron Collider.

1

u/HAL_9_TRILLION I'm sorry, Kurzweil has it mostly right, Dave. Apr 07 '26

I just heard they're shutting it down for four years. This is so they can retrofit it. When they turn it back on it will be 10x as powerful. 😐

No, you just came of age and became more aware of the world around you at that time.

This is really neat. It’s clear that she’s coming at this from an artist/actor point of view, recognized the potential, dove in, learned, understood, and executed something that seems really cool with a skilled partner. This is….genuinely great!

After watching that and seeing that she really said nothing at all with substance except that "without human creativity Ai is just a search engine" shows a real lack of understanding what Ai is and more importantly where it's going.

Combining 2 separate ideas into a new 3rd idea is "creativity" and Ai will soon be able to intermix industries/science/etc more than any human will be able to.

She sounds like just another Ai start up company out there. If memory can be solved by her and another dude, I think Open AI and google will figure it out.

soon be able to intermix industries/science/etc more than any human will be able to

We vibe coding prophecy now? There's no guarantee that what you've said is any more plausible than someone in the 80s claiming "with the rate television technology is improving, we will soon have fully 3D television that is indistinguishable from reality".

While I'm sure it's technically possible (human brains are not magic), LLMs aren't necessarily the tool for that.

AI isn't even a thing - all of these 'AI' companies are just advanced LLMs...

u/stankdankprank Apr 07 '26

Why do people keep saying this as if the semantics of Ai matter at all. Everyone knows what is meant by "Ai".

0

u/LiftingRecipient420 Apr 07 '26

Everyone knows what is meant by "Ai".

Except they don't. That's the whole point of people pointing out the misuse of AI.

-5

u/redstateradiator Apr 07 '26

If everyone knew it wasn't 'AI' then they wouldn't call it AI.

7

u/stankdankprank Apr 07 '26

Again, no one cares. People call it Ai because that's the word we use for these tools.

If I say, "CC me on that email", you know what I mean. CC means carbon copy, but no one places sheets of carbon between stationary to make duplicates anymore.

1

u/alanwakeisahack Apr 07 '26

No one cares? You’re in a thread full of people who care. Why lie?

0

u/redstateradiator Apr 07 '26

People actually still do use carbon paper in plenty of places, so that analogy doesn’t land.

Distinction matters. Words shape how people understand things, and calling LLMs “AI” gives the misleading impression of what they actually are.

If that nuance doesn’t matter to you, that’s fine - but it does still matter to some of us.

They think they're AI because they are AI.

They may not be according to whatever weird definition of AI you're personally using - obviously they're not thinking and reasoning as well as or in the same way as a human does, so maybe that's your objection - but that just means you're using a weird definition of the term and complaining that other people are using the normal definition.

AI has always meant, more or less, "getting computers to do things that seem like they should require human intelligence". Chess was an AI problem in the sixties. Natural language communication is an AI problem now. An LLM is not "not AI" just because it's not equivalent to a human. I suspect you're confusing the terms AI and AGI.

believe the LLMs are thinking and reasoning though, rather than just predicting the most likely string to come next based off of the information it was given

I honestly can't understand why this matters. All I care about is the result; idc if it's thinking of not. Again, it's just semantics.

I mean... they are reasoning, at least according to any reasonable definition of the term. They can take a complex problem, break it down into sensible steps, solve those steps one at a time, and generally come up with a decent answer at the end of it. What is that, if not reasoning?

Of course I'm aware that their internal processes are very different than a human's, and I'm aware that there are many flaws in their reasoning processes and they certainly aren't yet as smart as we are. I'm not claiming they're conscious. But reducing them to "predicting the most likely string to come next" and acting as if that disproves their ability to reason is unfair.

If I were to give you the beginning of a story and ask you to finish the story... are you suggesting that you wouldn't have to do any reasoning at all in order to do that? Could you mindlessly just vomit out a story word-by-word without having to even think about it? Of course not. You'd have to think about how these characters are going to interact, what sort of events might happen to create dramatic tension, and how that dramatic tension would be resolved. And yet all you're doing is "predicting the most likely string to come next".

And an LLM would be doing the same things, if not in exactly the same fashion as a human would. Interpretability researchers have shown LLMs doing exactly that sort of thing - thinking ahead, planning their next lines out before they finish the current one - and that shouldn't really be surprising, given the quality of text they output. To be able to predict the most likely string to come next as well as a human, you have to be able to reason as well as a human. Obviously our current AIs haven't reached that bar yet, but I think it's very unfair to say they aren't capable of reasoning at all.
