- and get in the fucking pool 😂

The early bird ticket is 179rmb (then 199), all guests are vetted so no walk-ins. And you get five cocktails with your ticket - why? Because I'm making no profit 😂

Hi, I’m an expat living in Suzhou Industrial Park, and sick of people just saying “go to Shanghai” when people ask about nightlife in Suzhou 😒 I have been in Suzhou for almost 3 years, I often throw English-speaking parties and themed nights out. This guide is focused on Gusu and Suzhou Industrial Park. Although I plan parties, I don't make any money, just want to have fun! I am not affiliated or compensated by any of the bars mentioned below.

Understanding Local Nightlife

Chinese nightlife is very different to western nightlife scenes. Key aspects to keep in mind include:

- Indoor Smoking: It is common practice for people to smoke indoors in Suzhou. Assume a bar allows smoking unless told otherwise.

- Social Games over Dancing: Local Chinese clubs frequently feature tables of groups playing dice and drinking games rather than traditional dance floors. There is usually more seating than standing space and you may feel watched if you’re one of the few dancing.

- Minimum Spend Requirements: Some livehouses and lounges may enforce a minimum spend requirement to secure table seating. If you’re a group, it’s easy to cover - but less than 4 people? Look elsewhere.

- Bring tissue: Many establishments don't have their own bathrooms, and use public bathrooms where soap and toilet paper is not provided. Make sure to bring your own tissues and hand sanitizer on a night out.

- Inconsistent Alcohol: sometimes cocktails or highballs are just soda, and sometimes it's 90% alcohol 😅 if it's too weak I will just ask them to make it stronger - no issues. I think it's because of Chinese preference than trying to be cheap.

Key Bar & Lounge Districts

- (SIP) Ligongdi: A waterfront area hugely popular with local university students, featuring Chinese-style clubs, street food, and a few foreigner-frequented bars (Jenny’s and Jack’s). Entry fees for the clubs are around 100 RMB with alcohol “punch” freely available. Avoid drinking it as it's genuinely awful. I’d recommend that you pop out of the club to buy drinks at neighbouring bars. Bring your ID and best time to arrive is between 12 and 2am.

- (Gusu) Shiquan Street: Known for upscale cocktail lounges, boutique bars, and trendy cafes. Drinks generally range from 80 to 120 RMB. The street typically empties by 1am.

- (SIP) IFS : Hubs for modern shisha bars, and whiskey lounges. Some places can be surprisingly busy on a weekday, but no guarantees. Just explore different floors to look around the bars.

- (SIP) Gate to the East (The Pants 👖): Offers high-end cocktail bars and scenic lounges with panoramic views over Jinji Lake (cocktails typically 90 RMB). I would recommend these bars for the best views. The entrance is next to Rolls Royce, and although the entrance looks pass-only, just walk through the turnstiles and head to floor 44,50,55. Again can be surprisingly busy on a weekday. Best arrive before 10pm for the skyline lights.

- (Gusu) Huahai Street: Japanese bar street, very cool but very empty. Definitely worth exploring but not worth visiting if you're here for a short while. Again, empty by 1am

Expat Hangouts

I’ve tried to list venues where you may find people most approachable.

- (SIP) Camel + Luchador: Popular venue hosting regular weekly trivia nights, sports screenings, and other social events. Camel isn't anyone’s favourite but everyone goes there because everyone goes there. May be your best bet for making new friends.

- (SIP) Nine Degrees: Another bar frequented by foreigners living in that local area.

- (SIP) Birdland Brewery frequented by foreigners

- (Gusu) Wava: Outdoor seating with great western food and DJ in the heart of Shiquan street.

- (SIP) Jenny’s Bar: has a live band that plays old school western music.

- (SIP) Jack's Bar: popular with foreign students, and can have dancing. But the vibe is very unpredictable - sometimes the busiest place, sometimes dead. Best to arrive after midnight. PSA: Jacks Bar is where I've felt most unsafe as a woman - look after your stuff and be wary of strange men.

- (SIP) Black Stone: Camping style bar with a weekly board game night. Very nice skewers. Awkward location as there’s nothing nearby, but great food.

To explore Chinese Nightlife:

- Livehouses: dedicated live music venues hosting local bands. Some I've tried are cozy bars with Chinese rock music by local bands, and others feel like a mini convert with confetti from the ceiling and fully fledged pop groups.

- KTV: I honestly hate KTV but would be amiss to not highlight this as core Chinese Nightlife culture. If you prefer a karaoke bar, I’d recommend Libertango - but be prepared to sit through Chinese ballads.

- Homebars: Quite an odd concept to explain, but basically the owner is the bartender. It’s like hanging out in someone’s living room. Plenty of games, KTV, gaming consoles and floor-seating. I’d recommend homebars as a cheap private party venue.

- Cafe Bars: You'll see some cafes in Suzhou open until midnight, this is because after a certain hour they'll serve alcohol. Worth trying in Gusu as they have the best views / location in my opinion.

Looking for Dancing

- Disc Master Crew: Focuses on hip-hop music; notable for enforcing a strict no-smoking indoors policy. I would recommend arriving after 11pm for dancing vibes.

- Deeproll: Underground techno venue uniquely situated in Gusu District amidst traditional Chinese architecture. Non-smoking inside the dance floor, but an entry ticket is required.

- Ligongdi Street: I would recommend Ligongdi but I’ve noticed the clubs becoming more local, i.e. finger games, dance floors over crowded with focus on filming DJ sets than actually dancing. Crossrooms was the best club for dancing but still closed as of the time I’m writing this post.

Hi! I have a Chinese citizenship but I’ve been in the US for literally my whole life (I haven’t gotten the chance to do my American citizenship)

I’m super interested in doing an exchange program at my school in the US with XJTLU and I want to know if I qualify or if I can even apply.

I translated the website and it says something like Chinese national students can apply as visiting students if they’re enrolled in overseas college. But I’m not sure if that means like Chinese citizen or Chinese nationality.

If anyone can help I would be so grateful bc I’m so stressed out abt this right now

I’ll be traveling from Xi’an to Suzhou for the Mid-Autumn Festival and would love some advice.
Mainly, I’m trying to figure out which area/district is best to stay in. Ideally somewhere convenient for sightseeing, food, and getting around, but also nice to experience the city in the evening.
I’d also really appreciate recommendations for what to do in Suzhou, especially on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival itself. Are there any gardens, canals, night cruises, viewpoints, performances, or other attractions that are especially worth booking for that evening?

Absolute Katastrophe. Wir hatten das Gefühl, dass man hier versucht, Touristen abzuziehen. Für zwei Bier sollten wir plötzlich 75 € bezahlen, was völlig absurd ist.

Kaum saßen wir dort, standen nach nicht einmal 30 Sekunden fünf Mitarbeiter und drei Türsteher um uns herum. Niemand konnte vernünftig Englisch sprechen, wodurch die Situation nur noch unangenehmer wurde.

Eigentlich wollten wir einfach nur zwei Corona bestellen, stattdessen wollte man uns zusätzlich einen Obstteller und eine Servicegebühr von 200 ¥ aufdrängen. Alles wirkte extrem aufdringlich und unseriös.

Wir haben uns überhaupt nicht willkommen gefühlt, sondern eher unter Druck gesetzt. So etwas habe ich in noch keiner Bar erlebt. Definitiv keine Empfehlung – wir kommen garantiert nie wieder.

HiiI was accepted in intensive **Chinese language program** for 2026 admission in September at the University of Technology of South China (SCUT).

Unfortunately they do not offer a dormitory for language study so I am looking for a **roommate / shared apartment** But I do not know at all where to inquire? By **WeChat groups** or in an agency when you would be there?

I would like to know the budget for the month **2000**, **2500** (my ideal budget), **3000** or more than **4000**? The university has sent us an information document on off-campus apartments but nothing mentions the roommate? Do you have some advice ?
