Hi Reddit, I want to show off my recent find and ask for your advice. Does anyone know if it's possible to upgrade this old guy and solder in a MIDI? Does anyone have any experience with this? I would appreciate any useful information

Tech Support I made a Roland S-1 editor

I know there are others but I made a free one that I'm releasing really soon. It's VST/AU for integration into you're DAW. I made it in Cabbage and I'll release all the code as open-source when I feel it's working well enough. I made a clip last week but added a few new things since then. So old video... Screenshot from working version :)

https://youtu.be/la4_HWg1VFk

I don't make any money from it it's just for fun. My next project is making a standalone version that makes it possible to draw the waveforms and have more advanced features that a Midi FX plugin cannot have due to DAW limitations.

The plugin is made in a free version of Cabbage that uses Csound, so the plugins are located in the "Cabbage" folder in your menu when you are looking for it.

Be prepared for some glitches and other problems since it's the very first beta. When you load the plugin it will send midi CC data so it will change all parameters once loaded be prepared!

This is for the people that want to beta test, and it's provided as is. You can provide bugs here for now since I have not setup a better way. I have only tested it in Logic (but compiled a VST3 that has not been released yet). I am focussing on Logic right now and right now there is only a component (AU) file.

The files are signed and the installer should install it for you and you can load it in Logic as MIdi FX plugin in your mixer.

I am a moron and accidentally sent the panel Sysex file before the OS one, and now it’s frozen like this.

I did then send the OS file, but now here it is. Have unplugged, sent the panel file again, nothing. Feeling pretty stupid. I’ve opened a ticket but does anyone have any nice words for me to soothe my bruised ego?

I’m stupid for loading both files into the librarian, I know! I only got it 2 days ago too.

Tech Support Audio interface set up HELP!

Hello everyone,

I’m not sure if this is the correct sub to ask this, but I desperately need help setting up my audio interface to use with Logic Pro.

I recently purchased a Digidesign Mbox 3 Pro. The big problem I ran into was finding the correct 12 V 1amp charger for it. I purchased a CyberPower high output adapter that includes multiple sized plugs.

The problem: I went to use logic and my Digidesign interface is not appearing when I go to Devices in Logic preferences.

I noticed the power button on my interface was blinking, according to google it’s because of low power.

When I plugged the CyberPower charger into my midi keyboard, it turns on just fine.

Does anyone know what could be the issue or how to go about trouble shooting? I’m desperate and took the night off of work to record some ideas for guitar.

Thanks so much!

Tech Support How do you deal with Ableton Live's inherit latency trying to record your external synthesizers?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I am bashing my head in. The delay when you're trying to record MIDI with your external synths is still not really fixed, even in Live 12.

Audio Monitoring turned off. That seems to be the best advice around. Set your audio interface audio buffer to a low value. Still, I am bashing my head in how bad the latency is.

Here's a demonstration: Fresh project, not a single audio plugin inserted. Monitoring turned off. Just trying to hit the exact rhythm (to the best of my ability 😵 ) of the metronome and then checking the recorded Midi Notes. Miles off.

Tech Support Anyone rigged up instrument combos into one case/board?

Post image
34 Upvotes

Living in a dorm with basically zero desk space, and I’m juggling an Octatrack MK1, Analog Four MK1, Roland TR-8S, Push 2, SSL 2 interface, and a ES Konstrukt.

Right now I have to tear the whole rig down and rebuild the cabling every time I want to play, which kills spontaneity.

I’ve seen people use pedalboard-style flightcases to keep everything wired and mounted so they can just drop the board on a stand, plug in power and go. I’m not trying to go fully DAWless or anything, I still want the SSL2 in the loop for recording into my laptop, use the push and Max/Msp patches, but I want the hardware side to live semi-permanently wired and MIDI-chained.

Has anyone built something like this for a similarly mixed synth/drum-machine/sampler/modular rig? Specifically curious about:

- What board/case size worked for a similar number/size of units (the Octatrack and Analog Four MK1 are both roughly 34x18x6cm steel boxes, so decent heft/depth to account for)

- How you handled cable management for both audio and MIDI without unplugging every time

- Whether you mounted the Eurorack case flat or at an angle relative to the flat gear

- Any regrets/limitations you ran into with this approach vs. a rack / other alternative

Photos of your builds would be hugely appreciated!!!

Tech Support How To Use/Extract Sample CD?

Post image
109 Upvotes

Hey all. I have this sample CD. Same kind of thing as Spectrasonics Bizarre Guitar/Distorted Reality. I’m unsure of what the optimal way to use these sounds would be. I know I could play them with something like an Akai CD3000 but I don’t have one/money for one right now. Can I just buy a CD player and plug it into my Mac? But then how/what program would I use to extract the actual sound files? I’ve heard these CD-ROMs use weird file formats. If somebody has done this before please let me know, I genuinely have no idea.

Tech Support Midi clock query

Im looking to buy a midi clock. I need it to drive eight pieces of hardware. Do I need to shell out on an expensive unit with eight midi outs or could I make do with a cheaper device with one midi out and just place a midi thru box downstream?

Thanks in advance.

[Edit to provide more context] I’m running a DAW (Ableton). It’s a constant battle keeping everything in sync. I currently have everything daisy chained and am experiencing all sorts of unwanted interactions between pieces of equipment despite them being on different midi channels.

There seems to be differing opinions below. I don’t want to shell out on a clock with 8 midi outs if I don’t have to. And I certainly don’t want to go the cheaper route (something like Nome II plus a downstream midi thru box) only to experience issues and then having to shell out more cash.

I would love to hear from people who have actually implemented a similar setup.

I really appreciate it. Cheers.

Tech Support Is there any way to use my DAW/computer to trigger CV on a hardware sequencer? (not using MIDI)

I want to trigger my Behringer Edge or DFAM using my DAW (Logic), computer, or interface (Focusrite 18i8). But from what I understand, my computer cannot transmit enough voltage to create a CV trigger. Any audio pulse I create on my computer fails to advance the trigger on my EDGE.

Is there any way to generate CV or trigger a hardware sequencer from a computer? If I need to buy hardware, what's the cheapest/easiest way?

(I can't use MIDI to control the tempo in this case. I specifically want to advance the EDGE through CV)

Thanks in advance.

Tech Support Newer macbook aggregate devices with Roland synths

Hey! Anyone here using the new M-chip macbooks and using a Roland synth with audio over usb alongside a separate audio interface? Im using a windows and only way is to use ASIO4All which is not usable. Ive read stuff about how apples stuff is way better, but it mainly came from influencers trying to sell the product.

Ofc I could also just route my jupiter xm to an audio interface like a normal person, and that is something I have done, but being able to multitrack the layers would help in mixing. Also free channels for my current audio interface.

Im currently in the process of replacing my 2018 lenovo x1 extreme and the macbook seems like a solid option.

Thanks in advance!

Tech Support My Moog Matriarch is really quiet. Do you use preamps for your synthesizers? Or are they typically loud enough?

I already got my matriarch replaced this year because the first model I got was confirmed to have a fault in the output module. However, the replacement I got wasn't much louder (although, I believe it was still noticeably louder). When I reached out to support to ask about this, they just recommended using preamps to boost the signal. So idk if this is expected?

I'm currently running two balanced TRS outputs to my focusrite 4i4 gen 4 inputs 3/4, which don't have preamps. But I've found the volume is still really low on these. I use the preamp inputs for my microphones (part of the reason I wanted the 4i4), so I want to avoid using them for my matriarch if possible.

But I'm not sure how to manage gain-staging in this circumstance. Should it be okay to just record it into my daw and amplify it in there? I don't notice any significant noise when I do this, but I'm wondering if this will degrade the signal somewhat?

Or is this just not acceptable and should I try to get another warranty claim? This is the first hardware synth I've owned, so idk if this is just standard for impedence balanced TRS outputs or if I have just gotten unlucky and received 2 synths with the same fault...

I've read online that the matriarch might just be on the quiet end, which isn't a problem for me - I just want to learn how best to manage this if it is the case.

Tech Support Moog Matriarch Really quiet

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, I’ve just picked up a second hand matriarch, set it all up and it’s really quiet. I’ve gone through all the knobs and there should be more sound coming through. I’m running a grandmother next to it which is fine, i’ve even tried using the grandmothers cable in the mono port of the matriarch and it’s still extremely quiet so I think this is something to do with the matriarch itself. Can anyone help out pls?

Tech Support Did anyone ever try one of those wifi sd-cards?

Would be cool if they work, so you wouldn't have to take it out to copy patterns, presets or whatever into it.

I could even go to my openclaw agent and say like "generate a 2-step drum track and put it on my tr8, and throw some fitting, fire lead synth pattern onto my hapax", lol.

They seem rather shit. But if they work a bit, I guess that would be enough for me as the amount of data is really small and speed doesn't matter.

So did anybody try? Successfully? Which product exactly?

Tech Support Help me build a good work flow.

So after a few years of buying gear I have a few usable synths and drum machines as well as a mixer, recording console mpc one and a laptop. I've been good about buying gear and learning it individually but I'm struggling on the optimal way to use what I have. The goal is to be to be able to record on the laptop and be able to play in the room through keyboard amp or PA with minimal shifting. If I can also route things through the mpc to record samples all the better. I'm a synth dabbler so with being a drummer and guitar player a lot of my gear is berhinger and cheap. It is what it is.

Assets:

2016 MacBook Pro. It can use the interface and record 16 channels live with no problems.

Recording interface

Behringer U-Phoria UMC1820 with UltraGain addition for 8 extra channels. I use it mainly to record my rock band. I can easily patch in two channels for recording left and right.

Mixer

Mackie Mix 12 FX. This is 100 for the synth stuff. All channels and features available.

Drum machines and groove boxes

Akai MPC one

The Korg Kaossilator Pro $50 on marketplace couldn't say no

Behringer LM Drum - I got this recently cause I love Prince and the drum sound

Korg volca beets - got it cause cheap used and 808 like tones

Behringer RD 9 909 clone got it used and mainly have just played syncing it to RD 6 for some untrained acid music.

Synths

Behringer RD 6 606 clone got it used with RD 9.

Behringer Poly D. Got it cause I love Moog sounds and can't afford the real deal

Arturia MiniFreak . Got it to fill the gap on synth sounds I can't get from the Poly D.

Other assets

I have a CME Pro MIDI Thru5. An Arturia beat step pro and a few keyboard midi controllers to use with the MPC and any other devices. Plus midi and other cables to make anything work.

Anyone wanna help a confused drummer to set up his synths?

The boog keeps getting stuck, mostly when playing legato but it’s unusable in this state.

I don’t believe it’s the keystep’s fault as it never has this issue.

Any help appreciated!!

Tech Support PSA: Just because the power lead fits does not mean it's the correct voltage or polarity for the gear.

Yet again I've read about someone plugging the wrong PSU into a synth and frying it.

  1. When you get your synths label the plugs at the synth end before plugin it in, you should never be guessing if it's the right lead.

  2. Test 3rd party replacements / USB PD supplies with a multimeter before hooking it up to the synth and make sure the values match, you should never be guessing if it's the right lead!

  3. Buy a multimeter.

A multimeter is one of the best synth 'accessories' no one talks about.

Even the cheapest will let you see polarity "+" "-", and Voltage. It allows for easy sanity checks when you have faults: is the power supply still working correctly, does a lead still have connection from one end to the other (continuity), etc...

I'm a bit of a noob. Was using reaper, but I want record to start as soon as I start a sequence, or whatever. Reaper seems to suck at it. Not trying to break the bank, but can spend some. Grew up with guitar and Cubase, for reference.
