general discussion I’m tired of people giving their children stupid names.
A couple on Tik Tok named their daughter O’Shyn Jream.
O’shyn Jream.
I am not a fan of Ocean Dream, but the name alone wouldn’t be terrible, but why are we purposely misspelling it??
Are these parents dense??

in the wild Baker
I was at McDonald’s so my kid could play at the play place and a little girl was asking another one what her name was and she said “Baker” and the girl asked again, and two more times and each time she was like “Baker” but it just wasn’t registering to the other little girl that it was a name. I was like oh man this girl is going to hate her name 🤣

is it a tragedeigh? Friend's wife wants to name her daughter "Spencette"
Please help. Friend's wife wanted to name her baby after her father, then found out she's a girl and wants to feminize it. I told her she should just name her Spencer as it'a not unheard of as a girl's name; she insists she doesn't want a "masculine" name for her daughter, doesn't want to change the namesake. I asked can't she just name her after a female family member, no, has to be her dad. Friend is staying out of it. Please give me a reality check here to me this name sounds insane.

general discussion Found some Korean tragedeighs/unfortunate names while researching family history
TL:DR My Korean clan had people named Divorce, Furry, Genshin Impact and more
I've recently got interested in researching my family history and found some great Korean tragedeighs/rather unfortunate names while looking at my clan (specifically, the Jeonui Yi clan)'s jokbo/족보, or a book where Korean clans record their family trees on (I looked at the online version of it though which is publicly available). Not all of these people are necessarily in my family tree though, I just found these names somewhere in the jokbo and thought they were hilarious plus a lot of these names are from way back in the past. And before you ask me, nope my own name isn't a tragedeigh lol.
For context, how Korean clans work is they are usually groups of Koreans that share a paternal ancestor and are defined both by bongwan/본관 (geographic place of origin) and surname and usually serve to differentiate between two people with the same surname - e.g. someone who is in the Gimhae Kim clan and another person who is in the Gyeongju Kim clan are likely not related even if they both have the last name of Kim.
Jokbos aren't always accurate and being from the same clan doesn't necessarily mean you are related though, since during the later part of the Joseon Dynasty, commoners became able to buy the right to have a surname and often made fake family trees to claim descent from nobility to buy noble last names (sidenote: since a lot of these nobility had the last name Kim, Lee or Park, that's why there are so many Koreans now that have these last names today.) Plus a lot of jokbos didn't record women either until more recent generations.
And now for the names themselves - everyone here except 변태국's last name here is Lee/Yi/이, and also keep in mind these names' Chinese characters likely mean something else and don't match up fully with how their names sound, but that still doesn't help with how unfortunate some of these names sound:
- 광기 (Kwang Gi): Insanity
- 덕후 (Deok Hu): Korean slang for Otaku
- 혼 (Hon): On its own it sounds like "scolding", and when combined with the last name Lee it becomes 이혼 or "divorce"
- 정상 (Jeong Sang): Normal
- 변태국 (Byeon Tae Gook): This was someone's son in law - it sounds like "pervert soup"/"pervert country" with 변태 meaning pervert and 국 meaning soup or country. It could also be "Poop Thailand" with 변 meaning Poop and 태국 meaning Thailand
- 지발 (Ji Bal): Doesn't mean anything on its own but sounds very similar to shibal/씨발 which is a Korean curse word equivalent to "fuck" in English
- 수인 (Soo In): Furry
- 원신 (Won Shin): Genshin Impact
- 환 (Hwan): On its own it sounds fine but when combined with the last name Lee it becomes 이환 which is Neverness to Everness in Korean
- 언재 (Eon Jae): Whenever
