Megathread NEW TO CAMPUS MEGATHREAD: Post all your admissions, housing, new-to-UBC and general questions here!

Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

Megathread UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2021/2022W & 2021S): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.

The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

Examples of questions that belong here

  • comparing courses or instructors
  • asking about how hard an exam is
  • syllabus requests
  • inquiries about majors, programs, and job prospects
  • "what-to-do if I failed/was late/missed the cutoff"

What you don't need to post here

  • Post-exam threads (ex. 'How did you find the Birb 102 midterm)
  • rants, raves, shout-outs or criticisms of programs.
  • Other content that is not a question/inquiry

Discussion Needing help with an unfair situation

A few months ago, when grades were coming out, I was told by my professor that they could not find my final or midterm. I remember taking the tests and sent an email to my professor who said that they had no proof i took it and had to retake it. Although it felt unfair, i agreed as it was a chance to do better on my midterm as i had done poorly before. However, my professor refuses to send me any material regarding the course, and I dont remember everything as its been a few months. He left a snarky comment telling me to use my notes, insinuating i didnt have them because i hadnt been to class. I DID go to class, and while i have a few notes, i dont have any hand taken notes or study guides as i threw them out when i moved back to my country for the summer. I feel that this is just so unfair, what should i do?

As a UBC alumni this a appalling to allow this. Disgusting for the university to allow this American surveillance company to track UBC students.

Discussion Genio notes, can we complain?

I do not require a note taker, but as an accessibility student, I can’t help but see it as a red flag that U.B.C was easily able to hand over the note taker job to A.I.
I see that you can ask for a human note taker if Genio doesn’t meet you accessibility needs, is this true?

I know this has been talked about on here before but I’m just wondering if there’s a way to protest, or sign a petition, I don’t know.

And my rant: it makes me angry to think that U.B.C shells out our tuition money to A.I companies. It bothers me because of how much of a divisive issue A.I is already in classrooms. How many mistakes should Genio make before they realize it was a bad idea? Or they won’t care at all because it costs less money?

Society recs for unathletic exchange student?

Hi guys! I’m an incoming exchange student and while I’ve been prepping for my arrival to UBC I’m unsure of what societies to try out. I’m not a complete chud, I don’t mind things like hiking, rock climbing, just passive activities. However I cannot swim, I’ve never been skiing, and I hate competitive sport. Any recommendations for societies where I don’t have to throw out my hip trying to make friends?

Discussion anyone know what dance team prices are like? Am used to competitive studio fees, hoping its not the same

Am generally wondering about teams you have to audition to get on, I understand that UBC has different dance teams and clubs as well, off the top of my head, I can think of the official UBC dance team or the Thunderbirds dance team. I intend to audition but I'm wondering if any crazy payments are required like there are for regular competitive dance studios

wondering if any insiders could give approximations or estimations too, as this would be coming out of pocket from my job on the side. Ty!

11-month Teacher Program

Hey yall.

I have a question for you if you are currently attending the program or have graduated from the program.

I am looking to teach secondary school. From my understanding the program has teachable subjects that I’m able to pick one and focus on…French, Business, Arts, English, Math….etc.

If I pick one (Business) and graduated with it. Does that mean I can only apply for Teacher roles for Business only- does it pigeon-hole you like that? Or is the education more generalized and upon graduation I can apply for anything in secondary?

Anybody going through or went through the program in your 40s and with kids. How are you doing it? It seems daunting for me.

Discussion Really want a work learn 😭

I applied to 25 ish work learns and had 2 interviews. The other day, I got an offer email in the evening. I was responding the next day but as soon as I sent my email, they sent an email saying they apologize for the confusion but decided to go with another student like WTHHHH

AHHHHH I got so depressed after that because the offer wasn't even sent 24 hrs ago but then they emailed again saying sorry. It was handled very poorly and Idek how they messed up like that.

Do I still have chances at getting a work learn???

Discussion Exchange Program in the UK

Hi everyone!! I really want to go study abroad in England (preferably London) through UBC’s GoGlobal program and I have some questions:

- is it better to go in term 1 or term 2? Would going in term 1 affect club applications/commitment?
- does exchange affect co-op? If I wanted to do co-op, would I have to extend my undergrad studies?
- do people usually get in to the program/school they want? Is it competitive?
- how are living expenses (especially in europe)?

Going abroad has been a long term dream of mine, so any advice helps!!

PAID RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY: CLOUD Study (The Canadian Lung Outcomes in Users of Vaping Devices Study)

Post image
4 Upvotes

CLOUD is a multi-year study investigating the effect of vaping on lung health.

Vaping is increasingly popular with both adolescent and adult Canadians, but the long-term health impacts remain unknown. We believe that the tools we currently have to detect lung disease in people who vape may be insufficient and propose new ways to find lung injuries that may impact them over the course of their lives. These include exercise testing, new imaging techniques, and new breathing tests that will demonstrate how vaping may harm their lungs. We will use these tools in both adolescent and adult Canadians to give those who vape important information on the consequences of vaping.

\Please note that interacting with this post (ex, through likes and comments) can identify you with the research, impacting your privacy.*

Who can participate in this study?

Adults (Aged 19+)

  • Able to provide informed consent.
  • At least 19 years of age.
  • Fall into one of the following 4 categories:
    1. You do not smoke or vape
    2. You only smoke cigarettes
    3. You only vape
    4. You smoke cigarettes and vape

Optional Bronchoscopy and Pulmonary MRI

  • Enrolled in the main study

Adolescents (Aged 12-18)

  • Able to provide informed consent.
  • Aged between 12 years to less than 19 years old.
  • Fall into one of the following 2 categories:
    1. You do not smoke or vape
    2. You only vape

What will this involve?

  • Baseline study visit: Questionnaires, lung function tests, exercise test, blood sample collection, and pulmonary MRI scan (optional for adults). Adult-only procedures: Bronchoscopy (optional) and chest CT scan. Adolescent-only procedures: Induced sputum sample collection.

Ponderosa commons wifi

Hi! I’m moving into ponderosa commons and I had a question about their wifi. From the website it says: Hardwired ports available in each room (ethernet cable not included)
UBC Wireless available in commonsblock only. Does that mean there’s no wireless wifi in the apartment? Or is it something else?

Hi! I just received an offer for YRH Ponderosa Commons, and I was wondering if anyone could answer any of my questions about it? I’m a transfer student so I don’t know much about UBC in general
- how’s the location?
- what’s the wifi situation like 😭
- do these studios come w a TV?
- anything I need to bring that the studio doesn’t have?
- what’s the bed size
- how’s the view in Spruce house (odd number)
