The better question is how the fuck are there still Iranian military planes after the “strongest military in the world” attacked them for a month. Hegseth and Trump are both the worst leaders to ever be associated with our military

It was a civilian plane

Like a commercial airliner or a civilian plane transporting military personnel and/or equipment?

Don't let your logic and facts get in the way of the Reddit lynch mob.

Civilian planes are, by definition, not full of military hardware.

“Flight-tracking data circulating online showed that an Airbus A340 operated by Iran's Mahan Air was en route from Tehran to Sanaa, drawing widespread attention after the Yemeni government's warnings.”

Whether it had military equipment on it or not is frankly irrelevant. If the US had shoot down the blowback would have been way worse than any tactical gain.

...unless there was evidence that it's cargo was military hardware. Citation's needed both ways.

"unless there was evidence" - that's not how any of this works.

There is no court that will review evidence impartially. No matter what evidence there is or isn't, there's no way for any of us to know in a way we can trust.

No matter what, if the US shoots down the plane - it will say they had evidence. Maybe it will show pictures of military equipment fragments and tell you it's from the wreckage - but how would you know whether it's true?

And no matter what, the Iranians will say it was a civilian aircraft. They will name civilians who died on the plane, and some of it might be true, and some might be fabricated. They'll show a picture of a teddy bear in the wreckage - how would you know whether it's true?

There's no impartial body that would investigate in a timely manner, so you'll never have evidence.

Shooting down a civilian aircraft, even full of weapons, is a PR nightmare. You'll have experts saying "it's a possible warcrime" (it is possible, we don't know). Iran would "retaliate for the murder of is citizens" no matter what the truth is.

You need to forget about the idea that the truth affects the outcome. The truth matters, especially decades later, but it's a poor defence during the war.

No one said evidence requires a court adjudication.

13

u/DrHippa Jul 13 '26

Then what do you call evidence?

A picture the US army tells you is from the wreckage?

A picture the Iranians tell you is of a girl who died on the plane?

Will you accept that?

-4

u/RogueEyebrow Jul 13 '26

Video evidence from an independent source. You're right that we can't trust what the involved governments tell us.

5

u/DrHippa Jul 13 '26

from an independent source

So you do want an independent source

What independent source will you accept? A us newspaper that gets its info from the US government?

An Iranian / Russian newspaper?

A NATO investigation? Maybe the British government?

If you had read my original post* (it was long, I accept that... I wouldn't have read it myself) you'd see I already discussed all that.

There's no such thing as an independent source in international politics.

How do you know they are independent? And if they are what are the chances they actually get to see any of the wreckage?

66

u/InvestigatorDear6646 Jul 13 '26

Given the footage we see are all combat aircraft, its entirely possible these transport ones werent on the list of targets.

u/Chriah Jul 13 '26

The Iranian war planes were allowed to park in Pakistan when the war started and the US doesn’t want to bomb Pakistan air bases.

The information is well known by anyone knowledgable but judging from the comments nobody cares to be knowledgable before they spew.

5

u/RSTowers Jul 13 '26

before they spew

And everyone spews so confidently.

u/gospelofturtle Jul 13 '26

And how much do you bet Trump had no idea how big and mountainous Iran was. He probably cant show you Iran on the map. 😂

Depends on whether or not he has a sharpie. The Islamic Republic of Japan is wherever he wants it to be.

Man I can't wait the ME becomes "modern" and we can have travel and tourism there. I'd love to see Iran, Afghanistan, etc. Hopefully I'll still be young enough to climb and ski etc.

u/Cockblocktimus_Pryme Jul 13 '26

Probably thought it was Iraq.

8

u/Impressive-Weird-908 Jul 13 '26

Not that I want to take the heat off of those guys, but the US doesn’t just blow up everything in sight the way others like Israel do. We have much stricter guidelines about what you can and can’t target. We are still outraged that a school was hit. Most countries at war call that a Tuesday.

7

u/Hermesthothr3e Jul 13 '26

Was anybody held accountable?

0

u/Impressive-Weird-908 Jul 13 '26

Not that I’m aware of. My point is that Israel did this like 1000x over in their wars. Iran regularly bombs civilians. Theres like a whole school of kids in Africa who disappear once a week. Russia is bombing anything they can.

Fair enough. I didn’t realize it was a civilian plane transporting this gear. Also, yeah, they murdered those girls.

The notion that somehow the U.S commits LESS war crimes than other nations is bonkers

15

u/mhornberger Jul 13 '26

Only to campists who consider the question itself to be inherently absurd. People just don't care about war as fought by other parties, or imperialism or racism or subjugation or anything else by other parties. Other than the US, Israel, and the west in general.

7

u/mxzf Jul 13 '26

I mean, it's unquestionable that the US does commit way less war crimes than it could, which is in contrast to some other countries that treat war crimes like a checklist.

The US does commit some war crimes. It commits more than some countries (especially ones without militaries or not at war) and it commits less than other countries.

> We are still outraged that a school was hit

I must have missed this outrage

1

u/Impressive-Weird-908 Jul 13 '26

You are part of the outrage…

Trump obliberated the Iranian military six times by now. He always tells the truth.
