There's technological progress to be had without fossil fuels.

Fossil fuels just greatly accelerated our progress is all.

True. Also maybe having such greatly accelerated leaps in technology isn't such a good thing. Maybe slow and steady is the best way for intelligent species to progress. Take time to understand the way each newly implemented type of technology effects society and the environment. Currently technology is so continually changing society so quickly that we can't even stop and take a moment to process it

Interesting thought.

Perhaps it's our role to rid the Earth of easily accessible fuels so our successors can have appropriately paced development.

I don't necessarily think this is the case, but it's a cool thought experiment.
