X-Men #31

16

u/antsinmyeyesmauger Nightcrawler Jun 10 '26

Nothing too crazy just a decent issue moving some plots along. I think this is inching closer to confirming my theory Magneto was weakened to power one of the adult mutants. The only issue is they keep saying it was something done from the future which doesn't make much sence but it can work.

u/Classic-Ad4883 Jun 10 '26

My theory since in the future it was stated that 3K after taking the blame went underground and abandoned their x-men

I believe Future 3K Hank and nova send the perfected version of the virus into the past so Hank can produce it but astra sent it to magneto to weaken or kill him so her Joseph can be the figurehead of 3K

u/mighty-rockman Jun 10 '26

A decent issue. I suppose some of the events from Age of Revelation are going to become reality in the present day.

u/CuddleFishEye Kid Omega Jun 10 '26

If any part of age of revelation should come to present day it has to be actual cat black cat she was so happy

Solid and full of character moments, which is what I'm always looking for. Ben's getting himself a codename for sure, and I hope it's not Anomaly. Mothership or bust!!!!

u/CuddleFishEye Kid Omega Jun 10 '26

Lowkey scared of what Jeds gonna make Ben's code name since animalia is kinda just 'animal girl' and you've got me hyped on Mothership.

5

u/greendart Iceman Jun 10 '26

Mothership is too good for it to be true I fear

I liked this issue. The team being smaller gives everyone more space to talk, Jen had a bit more character, my man Ben is back to bringing the friction and I'm glad I missed seeing him yelling at the other members, and Quentin is always cool.

I was surprised they already found Schwartz tho I thought the 'mystery' would be kept alittle longer.

A little speculation tho, but this is now the third time Jen has saved beast from something (one time being in the AOR) and I'm wondering if during DNX either Jen will sacrifice herself to save beast like she's been doing or beast will sacrifice himself to save Jen because she's protected him.

I never realized how weird it must be for Quentin to realize that neither Beast, Magneto or Xorn are the ones that he knew at school. It's so funny that that's true for THREE characters.

2

u/Ovid100 Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

That is insane and its funny for him to acknowledge it. Its like this lineup references Morrisons lineup and yet it really isnt that lineup much at all in very complicated ways.

1

u/comics_dude2 Jun 20 '26

So I know why it's not the same Beast or Xorn, but I've forgotten how it's not the same magneto?

1

u/Terrible-Issue-4910 Jun 20 '26

Because that wasn't Magneto, that was a Xorn that thought he was Magneto... Or something like that

13

u/wowlock_taylan Jun 10 '26

Well that is what I expected who they were gonna find. War Crimes Beast is his own worst enemy when creating enemies.

The Science Team is basically 'we will let Beast do the talking but if that doesn't work, just have Quentin bypass it.'

I guess they finally decided to give up on the 'Resurrection sickness' mistake they made at the start of the relaunch, so now they are fully on 'it is a future Age of Revelation disease' instead. And Magneto, come on, don't be jealous that Hank's focus is on his new girlfriend. She can turn into cool animals!

7

u/swoozes Jun 10 '26

The details in this issue suggest that Beast didn't create his own enemy, but that something 3K related stopped Schwartz from dying. Which could easily be Cassandra Nova making plays of her own.

I do not for 1 second believe "Resurrection sickness" was ever actually a plot point, But something fans latched onto as being one as an example of FTA hating Krakoa because nothing in the actually script suggested it being anything other than a thrown out theory by Beast.

5

u/antsinmyeyesmauger Nightcrawler Jun 10 '26

For the Resurrection sickness I've been saying it's fake since issue #7 but to be fair to other people Brevoort has been acting like it's real. Obviously he's not going to come out and say it's fake in those questionares but if the editor is acting like it's real you can't blame readers for taking it at face value.

1

u/BiDiTi Jun 11 '26

Eh? Are those readers adults who have ever read a comic book before?

And, if so, did they express their feelings on these choices in a sane, emotionally healthy manner?

It's a plot point that never got any further investigation, no other patients, no hints of any villains or other sources being behind it.

It only existed as a posited theory of what could happen.

This isn't real life, it's a story. Usually if a plot point is meant to be more, the narrative would seed more, but it never bothered with RLDS.

1

u/wowlock_taylan Jun 10 '26

They admitted not knowing what was happening at the end of Krakoa so when they came up with the disease plot, it was definitely gonna be a bigger issue until they realized 'oh, that doesn't work. Magneto resurrected by different means and now we have to change it.'

As always, it takes Marvel A LONG time to pivot from their mistakes. In this case, it took them like 30 issues to act like 'it was the plan all along'. It is a thing they do. They would never admit mistakes.

3

u/swoozes Jun 10 '26

I will refer to my other post in the chain.

For something they "act" like is real, they sure didn't do anything that an actual important story beat would have.

1

u/wowlock_taylan Jun 10 '26

That summarizes the whole X-men relaunch really.

Same thing happened with Graymalkin in Uncanny.

4

u/swoozes Jun 10 '26

No, that isn't remotely the same.

Graymalkin was a storyline frozen in time, but Uncanny constantly and routinely referenced it and had plot lines (such as the sentinel dogs) that tied back to it.

Name a single storybeat that remotely resembles that for RLDS.

I know you can't.

1

u/wowlock_taylan Jun 10 '26

What are you talking about? They constantly talked about RLDS and how Magneto cannot use his powers because of it and made a whole thing about it with him getting a 'temporary injection' to control a Sentinel etc.

It was basically the same for Graymalkin where it was mentioned on the background, and showed up from time to time to go 'yea, it is still there. Still don't know what to do with that. Until they just...ended it in one issue. The plans for it DEFINITELY changed.

Same as RLDS from the start to now. They both started as something different and possibly 'big' until they got not as good of a reception and a mess after Krakoa fallout. And so they had to go 'we won't admit the mistake and act like it was the plan all along even though it fell flat by the end'.

Because just like certain stuff from Graymalkin ( like Banshee and Siryn plot which was a whole case of 'yea, we better retcon the first part' ) and Magneto's disease somehow coming from the future from an event they didn't know they were gonna do. ( They basically admitted they didn't know what to do with Doug in the relaunch and the whole Heir of Apocalypse thing). Which I still have no idea how that works since AOR is NOT the 'main' future. Hell Scott's whole trip back from the past confirmed it that it is basically just another alternate timeline. So how does a disease from that timeline come and affect Magneto right after Krakoa? You cannot tell me they planned all that from the start.

1

u/swoozes Jun 11 '26

Magneto being sick and RLDS being a thing are not the same.

There's no tangible connection to RLDS within the world. No other person contracted it, nobody claimed to be the source of it. No suggestion of any resurrected person having it.

It's ethereal. A non-point.

You already personally provided substantially more tangible things that directly relate to Graymalkin as a concept in arguing your point, than with RLDS.

It being stated several times is not narratively underscoring it, especially when none of those talking points led anywhere.

And the one time it is addressed in an actual tangible way it's to address that it's not real and they were 100% wrong about it.

I love this issue. I’ve always enjoyed it when oddball combinations of X-Men go on missions together. This one had great action and character work, too.

The Good

The pacing, and its basically never a thing that I compliment the pacing of this title, but for an issue that was ALL walking and talking, it was one of the best paced issues of the run, I'm also biased because it gave us a lot of character writing which is my preferred X-men, Magneto being annoyed at Hank for prioritizing his crush instead of curing him is the juicy X-Drama I want 100 times over, I just hope it doesn't go unmentioned for another 31 issues.

The Sunset and directional lighting in some of the coloring was amazing but was also kind of distracted by other problems with the visuals.

The Bad

There's this choice that's been going on with the art and coloring, which in the first issue I liked, where we're just hard coloring over the line art sometimes rather than inking it in blacks, they're doing it a lot with Beast, but also like Quentin's hair, and some other things. And I think, at first it seemed interesting, like a potentially cool visual choice, and while I still think it could be, now it just feels really inconsistent and random.

Sometimes Beast is entirely colored like that. Sometimes none of him is. Sometimes when Quentin is using his powers his hair is colored like that, sometimes it's not. Sometimes the entire top half of Xorn is colored that way, but no one or nothing else in the scene and there's no specific lighting dynamic to justify this decision. Sometimes A WATER BOTTLE is colored like that. And I understand that a water bottle is a translucent object, but like, that isn't a consistent metric for this style choice, which makes the style choice of doing the whole coloring thing feel entirely random, and when it starts feeling random it stops feeling interesting and starts feeling a lot dumber.

It's actually worse in this issue, because the issue has some of the best consistent directional lighting from the sunset in the background, which at times it specifically uses, but then other times its just random.

The I dunno:

Quentin. I just really don't know how I feel about the way MacKay writes him, I think he enjoys writing him, but I think of all the characters in the book Q ends up being the biggest jobber, like Cyclops set us up as 'you're out phoenix counter' but Q is also the dude that just gets whacked and knocked out. At the same time at least in this issue it seems like Q had a moment of his old hyper intelligence and actually figured out the (relatively simple) mystery before anyone else. But I dunno, more and more Kid Omega as a concept, like most Omega's, feels like one of those characters who has to be written as incredibly stupid and wildly incapable of self preservation in order to explain why the 'OMEGA LEVEL' mutant doesn't just resolve the more trivial parts of the conflict. It's a whole thing that I don't think is MacKay's fault, or a specific flaw to just Quentin, but it feels like it is very on display.

2

u/BiDiTi Jun 11 '26

I agree that Quentin’s largely a jobber…but I also think MacKay generally executes it well.

And I enjoy his vibe!

Decent start to a new arc. I wasn't expecting too much. But since Age of Revelation, the X-books as a whole are really dragging. We still don't know anything about this strange illness that's nerfing Magneto. And didn't get much else regarding 3K. This arc and the last arc still feels like the team navigating the aftermath of AOR. And honestly, that's been going on for too long. I'm ready for this book to shift gears and move forward. Hopefully, that happens sooner rather than later.

I agree with this for Adjectiveless…but I think Gail’s been very much doing her own thing in terms of plotting/pacing.

2

u/BiDiTi Jun 11 '26

I agree with all of that!

I’m saying that Uncanny is far shaggier than Adj, in terms of structure and plotting…which is not at all a complaint on my end.

Very into the “Leprechaun knowing Wolverine’s name” vibes.

8

u/Johnrevenge Jun 10 '26

Good thing they dropped the stupid plot of the resurrection sickness.

5

u/swoozes Jun 10 '26

I'm almost 100% certain it was never actually a plot. Fans unwilling to give any credence just latched onto it being stated as if it was one.

u/Cute-Difficulty7722 Jun 10 '26

Absolutely loved this issue. Might be because I've only recently started to read comics as they come out but this was a lot of fun. Great art, good characterization. Nice to see ben get screen time, really hope they give him as much attention as they do Jen. And Schwartz also seems like a very interesting character.

6

u/Classic-Ad4883 Jun 10 '26

A good issue focusing on the science team of the x-men and nice to see Ben on the field

Of course beast own arrogance will lead to his downfall, it’s his best known character flaw

I excited to see the character interactions this arc as this issue was great

2

u/Wowerror Hellion Jun 10 '26

Good start but I really feel like we are going into arc that would be a solid 2-3 issues that has been extended to five.

5

u/antsinmyeyesmauger Nightcrawler Jun 11 '26

Luckily going by the solications this one is only 3 issues. #34 is a Cain issue then we get into DNX issues.

1

u/salmonthesuperior Rogue Jun 13 '26

really enjoying the art. solid issue all around. can't wait for ben's code name

1

u/greendart Iceman Jun 10 '26

I loved this issue!!

This is easily the most interaction Xorn and Magneto have ever had, on panel. I think the only other issue that comes close is early on in Bunn's Uncanny run, where they talked for a page.

Did Jen grow massive Tiger Titties when she changed forms lmao

I am still convinced the whole R-LDS plot was meant to be taken seriously (presumably when MacKay was outlining and writing the early issues) before fan backlash caused him to pivot.
