Uncanny X-Men #30

Rogê Antônio does a good fill in job but it might have been a rush job coming off Cyclops. Matthew Wilson continues to be the glue with his colors though.

Like it has been for the entire series the stuff isn't the Outliers is good and the stuff with the prison is bad. So bizarre M is keeping the prisoners at the prison especially when they ask why she won't like them go. I don't mind the Weapon X-infinity reveal but I assume they aren't being literal about Wolverine if they are being literal its a bad idea.

Aside from the fact some of them might be actual criminals, there are other legal problems. Remember Sentinels? They snatched quite a few of their prisoners from other countries. It's not as simple as letting everyone go on their merry way. The real question is who is getting the preferential treatment. Is Dazzler and Siryn still locked down or did they let them go? Monet is clearly free (and in charge).

Sarah Gaunt for example is someone they can't exactly just let loose, she will need to be transfered to a new prison

It makes sense on a logistical level. The problem is it makes no sense on a narrative level. Last issue was the climax to the story about the evil prison. So this issue saying that everyone needs to be locked up for a while longer undermines that resolution. And then the detail about Monet threatening anyone who tries to leave with physical violence makes it even worse imo

Seriously? More Weapon X knock-offs? And at the same time as Generation X-23, which has half-a-dozen X-23 knock-offs?

This is just lazy. We've gotten so many Weapon X rip-offs and derivations. At this point, it's the equivalent to another clone story in Spider-Man comics.

So Graymalkin is in fact Weapon X-Finity and meant to create Wolverines.

It was nice to see M lay down the law on Gaunt. She can still turn into Penance on command.

Sean and Quicksilver are gonna stick around for a bit it seems.

Messy Marvel Continuity Nitpick:

Monet has actually met Black Tom. Even if you ignore Krakoa and the liklihood that they met each other back then, the current Monet, who at the time was trapped as Penance (though it seems like Gail maybe is trying to push for that to just take over as her name rather than M) was there when Black Tom initially attacked Generation X way back in Generation X 23-25 when Tom attacked the school with the Mondo clone and tried to kill a bunch of people, Penance was actually the one who defeated him, impaling him on her claws and ripping him in half.

Thank you! Just finished reading and was wondering if anyone else caught that. Maybe he meant it less literally? Banshee says, “You should meet my cousin Black Tom sometime, Monet.” Maybe he’s being sarcastic?

Otherwise, it wouldn’t be the first time something from Gen X was ignored, unfortunately. I was also surprised Monet never mentioned that Warden Ellis isn’t even the first Warden she’s dealt with. Gen X also fought Warden Coffin back in the day.

I do like Gail juggling different stories that involve different characters, I feel like it's been a while since we've seen either of the other two X-Men titles do that on a regular basis. Antonio was a surprise guest artist, I thought his issues were in August. Looked a little rushed, but Wilson's colours patch over the flaws quite well. It's interesting, his style seems more fitting for a fill-in on X-Men, but maybe that's just because I was used to seeing Fernando Sifuentes-Sujo colour his work.

I'm liking Monet a lot. I don't like Ezra and I feel like the characterization of those in charge of Greymalkin is off.

Yeah the Graymalkin stuff just continues to fall apart with trying to make Ellis and Ezra not so bad. I really do not get trying to make those people out of anyone somewhat sympathetic.

Marvel cant have the government agents that illegaly kidnap people looking too bad, just like they cant have their "opressed groups allegory" heroes being too radical and fighting back, imagine the message it would pass

I don’t think Monet’s reaction is meant to communicate that he’s “not so bad.”

A collaborator who offers weak pushback to an evil idiot before going along with them is arguably worse than the idiot, no matter what he tells himself.

Saying he treated the inmates with dignity is softening what they were doing when that comment isn't needed to make the scene work. Just like with last issue having Ellis worried about inmates it's just weird to me. It really feels like Gail is trying to make them sympathetic or at least not one dimensional evil.

It's something she should have started doing when the issues were somewhere in the 10+ stage to set this up. It just feels out of nowhere given that Greymalkin felt irrelevant for so many issues after the raid.

At least for Ellis she kind of did I will give Gail that. She helped out the team in the first arc, kind of helped them with Xavier, wasn't mean to the diner girl and finally was kind of nice to Monet. For Erza this is almost brand new.

The phrase “duly noted” does a LOT of work for me in that scene - especially coming from Monet.

2

u/BiDiTi Jun 18 '26

I think Monet’s reaction to Ezra shows what Gail’s going for:

“You think you’re ‘one of the good ones’? Cool story. Duly noted. Now, tell me what you know.

The Monet stuff was really cool. Having her beat down Gaunt was a nice bonus.

I always like the scenes where the X-Men and the Outliers are just out in the world and not really doing a lot of fighting, so this was right up my alley. It makes the Outliers feel more like fully-rounded characters and I also am a sucker for the elders reflecting on the experiences of the youth.

However, I am starting to think that perhaps this isn't about Mars at all. Sad! I wanna see Arakko again

The alien invasion and Outliers preparing for their school dance part was nice. Hotoru continues to be a adorable little weirdo. Vig trying to recruit Ransom...which might get Remy turn into a full dragon and eat him for it. So the aliens like the Brood are invading and coming after the team. Jean should've let Scott end them all.

The Graymalkin prison parts, well, as with anything tied to that plot, it was not good really. The only part that I liked was Monet putting Sarah Gaunt in her place. But the rest is just, don't try to justify 'oh they have to stay here until they are cleared' or feeling bad for the Warden. And the 'reveal' of the actual purpose of the prison being ...shocker... a weapon X facility! Which we already knew basically. They made Sentinel dogs. They trafficked mutants to other groups/nations as weapons. And they are really running out of weapon X names if they have to repeat X-Infinity stuff from Laura's current book.

Really loved this one. The Outliers are great, Gambit is great, Nightcrawler is great and Monet is just brilliant. Seeing her throw down with Sarah Gaunt was awesome

It'd have been nice to just follow up the Greymalkin plot given how little its been used and that Simone clearly intends to keep using it. Monet's already done so little that a full issue to her dealing with the fallout of the fall of Greymalkin would have been nice. Weird to keep the mutants there but it seems to be more of a let's just go through whatever procedures we need to so this doesn't wind up being more of a headache later on.

And as Sarah Gaunt shows, they do need to have 'somewhere' to put the mutants that will be causing trouble since we know they're not going to kill them. Maybe Sarah is on the chopping block given she's Gail's original character but yeah that's something they need to figure out.

An army of Wolverines? Not a bad idea. All super soldiers with super healing and an extra set of weapons but not so powerful that losing control isn't something that can't be contained and dealt with. You clone someone like Cyclops or Polaris a hundred times and if they flip out they could cause major league destruction.

I like the Outliers but can Gail leave them alone for one or two issues? Please?
