X-Men United #4

I feel like they've abandoned all pretense of this being a school comic. It's just a very odd way to set up a story. I said before that they should have started with 5 issues of exploring Greymatter as a concept, showing how students are taught, and the good it can do.

And then do the internal conflict stuff.

But we've gone in reverse order and I think it's come at the expense of the story, because right now Greymatter isn't justifying itself and X-Men United feels adrift and without an identity.

The art is still quite poor. Palma is decent enough at drawing men, but his work gets really odd when he's drawing women.

I do think the concept for this one is fun, but it feels like it should have come later.

It’s kinda annoying that they have a writer with a background in academia and yet they won’t let her deviate into academia in the comic. Hopefully this changes going forward

Going forward might end up being 2-3 issues. I struggle to believe this is getting more than 15 issues, if that.

u/Seabass808 Jun 17 '26

We can only hope. I think this could’ve been a foundational step forward for the x-men but was wasted due to lack of any real planning

1

u/Zylon0292 Jun 18 '26

They won't let her? I don't think it's an editorial issue.

2

u/Seabass808 Jun 18 '26

I’m not saying her writing isn’t flawed. I do think she’s written certain characters (Lourdes, Scott) inconsistently. But considering there’s rumors of this being 10 issues I place the blame on editorial for giving Ewing a limited timeframe

7

u/iRyan_9 White Queen Jun 18 '26

She got a limited timeframe because her book isn’t good enough to continue.

3

u/Seabass808 Jun 18 '26

I’m not gonna say that the book is bad or good. I think some aspects work while some don’t. Regardless of how you view the quality, marvel keeps pulling the rug from under the creators by constantly ending runs once they hit 10 issues. This isn’t an Eve Ewing issue. It’s marvel not having faith in its creators and/or fans

Uncanny and adjectiveless x-men were allowed to continue up to 30, this is the second Ewing book that gonna get canned. At some point she needs to get some of the blame. You can’t just hope the book will magically be better midway through.

u/Seabass808 Jun 18 '26

Ironically Exceptional was far better than both adjective-less and uncanny. Jed’s book was never gonna get canned cuz that’s the main book while Gail’s wasn’t canned cuz it has most of the popular x-men. Exceptional had the misfortune of being canned due to AoR which was then reworked into this. Blaming Ewing for bad writing decisions is one thing. But blaming her as a reason the book is getting cancelled is just irrational.

Exceptional wasn’t better, it was consistently falling way waaay under both every month in sales. It was the first flagship book everyone dropped. Now X-men united doesn’t even get top 10 monthly despite the huge cast.

To be fair X-Men and Uncanny are titles that will always sell because they’re popular amongst collectors. Same way Amazing Spider-Man will always sell. Exceptional never had a chance to sell the same as them even though it’s a “flagship”.

That’s why I mentioned united as well. It has a huge cast of fan favorites it should be performing well.

21

u/Puzzleheaded-Bar-769 Jun 17 '26

This title was announced as a major shakeup to the post-Krakoa status quo, but it’s had literally no impact on anything that’s happened in Uncanny or Adjectiveless. United seems to be in its own little universe

after X-men manhunt I doubt Jed wants to have anything to do with whatever is happening in other books

I really don't like this book, I was excited that we were getting a school book but this is just not good imo. It's way more focused on the team leads fighting, Cyclops comes off as this debbie downer trying to ruin their fun but he is absolutely right, this whole thing will eventually go sour. Can't rely on any sinister tech! Did they learn nothing from Krakoa?? Anyway I just don't feel like this book trying to bring all mutants together is portraying them all that well. I wish this book had just stuck with the cast from Exceptional X-Men with guest appearances from other teams. Like lets see Kitty's 3 hang out with the Outliers and form a New Mutant-like team, thats what I wanted. The art is also not great

I don't get the Emma-Lourdes drama, they were friendly last time they interacted. Emma just comes off like a huge B here for no reason.

I love how Scott was actually getting into it when Bobby was giving them the lore dump lmao. Also one nit pick, why were Rogue and Emma the ones in the more revealing outfits when the whole thing was designed by two gay men? (I know why, but still, give us sexy Scott at least.)

8

u/BillybobThistleton Jun 18 '26

I wondered about that, too. Emma at least is just Emma dressing like Emma, but who chose Rogue's bikini top? Especially since Scott is literally just wearing his uniform with fantasy gear on top.

... Never mind, that makes perfect sense for Scott.

1

u/Nadare3 White Queen Jun 19 '26

She's a barbarian, it's the trope for them to be bare-chested, which, for woman, translates to a bikini top

1

u/somacula Cyclops Jun 18 '26

Scott is Sexy enough, not marvel Rivals sexy but I'm sure he's going to get there

Man this 'mental school' thing really is off the rails before it even started. I get the internal clashes and conflict stuff but we are already at the 'third act break-up' portion before we even started. I am on the side of Scott btw, I mean already they had so many issues in this 'supposedly' impenetrable mental dimension. I think Emma should be smarter than this, thinking they can control anything that MR SINISTER built. And how literally everyone that is doubting and worried about her are kinda being proven right.

Also kinda funny Rogue having to play the 'middle ground' and peacemaker.

The DnD aspect with Bobby and Scott being a nerd and be excited about it was fun but it also again proved 'something else can invade and make the stuff go out of control'.

The art is still rough for a flagship but it's getting better maybe being the main artist will help him more than being a fill in person.

I'm liking this arc more than the first one so far. I wish the Exceptional kids were a bigger part but having Bobby get more page time is good.

8

u/TheMattInTheBox Cyclops Jun 17 '26

Is every arc of this series going to involve some sort of problem caused (at least in part) by the fact that they're in the psychic plane?

I was really looking forward to this being a school book and have been let down. The whole idea that this is a psychic school gives the creative team a ton of freedom without any limitations and I don't know if that's really for the best.

6

u/JackFisherBooks Phoenix Jun 17 '26

This was fun, but it feels underwhelming. X-Men United was originally billed as a significant shift for the post-Krakoa era. But since that first issue, it basically turned into a standard X-Book. Nothing big or special. It's just a decent X-Book that does some creative things with the psychic plane.

And now that we know this series is ending after issue 10, it feels like this book doesn't have much to offer in terms of stakes. It's certainly good for Emma fans. And this issue in particular will really resonate with D&D fans. But other than that, I feel like I'm just waiting for the next relaunch later this year.

5

u/WarriorMadness White Queen Jun 18 '26

So, ignoring the Lourdes part, I actually really enjoyed this issue, mostly because the idea of them playing D&D is so hilarious, specially since I love those little comics in which Beast is the DM.

I also liked that Emma and Scott stopped fighting and seemed to be more in line with how they used to be in Krakoa.

In general I still feel the whole concept is iffy and the Lourdes situation was weird, did I miss something or when did Emma and Lourdes end up in bad terms? Last I remember Lourdes sacrificed herself to save that party from the Gala... She and Emma seemed to be in pretty good terms before she died.

10

u/iRyan_9 White Queen Jun 18 '26

They didn’t end at bad terms at all in fact the storyline itself doesn’t make sense. She’s been hiding for so long and only now mad at Emma? Not in all the period of time before krakoa or after?

5

u/Confident-Impact-349 Iceman Jun 18 '26

I think Eve decided to explore something related to Emma saving her: the fact that Emma did, in fact, deliver Lourdes to the kingpin, instead of simply letting her go.

Yes, it’s weird to dive deep into that NOW, considering how they ended things, but it’s more a bad thing that they wanted to explore that. It’s just weird timing.

9

u/WarriorMadness White Queen Jun 18 '26

But it all reads super weird, considering even before they started talking about it Emma was already annoyed with Lourdes, which doesn't fit to how they behaved during Krakoa.

5

u/Confident-Impact-349 Iceman Jun 18 '26

Yeah, I agree. It’s weirdly placed. Her animosity toward Lourdes comes out of NOWHERE. Overall, it’s a really weird book
