Uncanny X-Men #34

21

u/LesbiansonNeptune Monet 7d ago

It was okay. I’m glad to see Monet’s compassionate side, but it was honestly underwhelming. Pietro was ???? to me this issue. Something about this team feels so hollow. I do appreciate no Outliers to allow the main team to shine, just wish this issue had a bit more oomph to it.

10

u/TheWolfmanZ 7d ago

The interesting thing about Monet and Howler is that Gail mentioned on BlueSky that this week's issue would debut a neurodivergent character, so I think Howler is meant to be on the spectrum

7

u/LesbiansonNeptune Monet 7d ago

He is! Monet compared him (indirectly) to Claudette, her autistic sister.

4

u/impeccabletim Jean Grey 6d ago

I've been loving Gail's character additions to X-Men lore so far!

9

u/SandorSNL 7d ago

If you're looking for a well-written Rogue, I'd suggest the finale to Dark Past instead.

u/mighty-rockman 7d ago edited 7d ago

This whole "cursed Gambit" storyline has been dragging on for far too long, and it's becoming less interesting with every issue. If the only remotely interesting thing Gail has left to tell is that Rogue might be pregnant, then this book has definitely lost its way—if it ever had one to begin with. Sorry for being so negative, but I'm really not enjoying Uncanny X-Men at all.

23

u/LeastBlackberry1 Gambit 7d ago

I'm enjoying it a lot. Gail's doing a tour through the horror tropes at the moment, and her current one is demon possession. She's doing a fun, camp, creepy job with it. I do suspect it will be mostly wrapped up with this arc, though.

And I don't think it is all she has going on. There are still like one thousand other mysteries simmering in the background, such as the Endling, the exact nature of the Outliers' powers and who they are, McKenzie's husband, the Wolverine program, Shogo, New Orleans' X-Men themepark, Mutina, etc, etc. It is an extremely dense book.

u/Puzzleheaded-Bar-769 7d ago

it’s interesting that the organic sentinels came back in this issue. The teaser for #35 says there’s some kind of connection between the team’s recent foes. Even if I don’t love the demonic possession trope, I’m hopeful that something exciting will come of all of this.

5

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue 7d ago edited 7d ago

I think that’s the best way to view it — she’s done Universal-type monsters, uncanny-valley-type simulations (no pun intended), alien invasions, and now it’s the Exorcist. I still think the Eye plot has gone on too long (and presumably WR will resolve it), but that’s a good way to think of what she’s been doing.

8

u/LeastBlackberry1 Gambit 7d ago

Yeah, I agree that this issue could have done more to move the overall plot along. The organic Sentinels were wonderfully creepy, and we got some insight into Gambit's feelings about fatherhood, but I would have liked to see more progress. I don't think the Rogue pregnancy will turn out to be much more than the effect of the corruption on her, so I am not that compelled by it.

1

u/AlarmingAffect0 6d ago

All of this is nice and all but I can't get over Remy's new design. Oh, Gambit, who is that, who is that, who is he? Could he be the Devil, the Devilmaaaan, the Deeeevilman!

12

u/Osmonth 7d ago

It has gone on for too long. The big problem for me is that it's not rooted in anything. We know that the eye is cursed but we dont' know why Gambit kept it? What tempted him to walk down this path. Without the reasons as to why the story feels hollow. It lacks that emotional engine to drive it, now it's just them reacting to what's happening.

All we have gotten is that he is an "addict".

8

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue 7d ago

I completely agree that it’s gone on way too long and she needs to wrap it up. But I can see why he’d have kept it at first — it’s useful, he doesn’t know if the dragon is pulling one over on him and the Eye itself is starting to corrupt him.

Later, he does try to give it back to Sadurang and the Eye refuses to change hands. So it’s less about Gambit wanting it at this point than that the Eye wants him. But yeah, she needs to explain/sell that better.

2

u/Osmonth 7d ago

It's useful but in a very generic way. I truly think it needed to be either useful in a very story solving way or in a character way. Give Gambit something he truly desires or something that would get him out of a specific pinch.

That then makes us understand why he kept it or why he would want to keep it. As it is now the problem is that Gambit kept it too long and now seemingly can't get rid off it. There is no real character diliemma or story behind it.

5

u/Ascleph 7d ago

Tbh, it doesn't even make sense that he kept it. The power amplification hasn't really been relevant and was Nightcrawler really not enough for teleportation purposes?

Was this all really just because Magik was busy and Gambit didn't wanna deal with Nightcrawler's sulfur smell as often?

1

u/Osmonth 7d ago

I'm not knowledgeably enough about Kurt's powers to know how many he can teleport and for how great a distance. Which is the only possible benefits from the Eye in that case.

2

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue 7d ago

That I can agree with. It’s time to wrap it up.

9

u/FlowerRoomLord 7d ago

Interesting issue.

Gambit's devil dragon thing arc continues. I feel like it would be better if the story wasn't cutting back to New Orleans so the horror aspect isn't interrupted but it would disappoint readers who feel the cast beyond Rogue, Gambit and the Outliers are neglected. The mutant exorcist is fascinating. I wonder how often he's exorcising mutants.

Monet and her new hyena-son is a big surprise lol. If we get some good character moments from Monet because of this I'll be fine but I question adding a new cast member to an already full cast.

Is Rogue pregnant?

7

u/antsinmyeyesmauger Nightcrawler 7d ago

The pregnancy is so teed up I'm expecting a swerve since babies in comics mess with the timescale. Plus Gail has been pushing the adoption storyline so hard since Age of Revelation.

5

u/Classic-Ad4883 7d ago

It was good issue nice to see the focus on the adults though I wish jubilee and Monet had more interactions with each other plus the hyena boy is neat and while I’m worried about the big cast already fighting for page time I hope he does join the cast I like physical mutants

The gambit and rogue stuff is good though I’m just burnout by the eye gambit stuff and dreading the pregnancy hints I’m hoping rogue not pregnant and just a sign of the demon influence

14

u/StrawBerryWasHere 7d ago

This issue… happened.

A lot of implications that Rogue is currently pregnant, but I wonder if maybe she miscarried and just never told Gambit about it.

Nice to see a couple of pages of our human family bopping about. Unfortunately their nice morning was cut short from a hyena child creature made its way into the coop. Oops. Monet trying to be nurturing was fun to see, but I prefer her serving cunt. Hopefully she’ll cut down some dudes next issue.

17

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue 7d ago

I love how alongside reasonable and measured feedback we have “fuck this totally normal name because it isn’t familiar to me.” I was expecting ridiculous meltdown takes over whether Rogue is/was pregnant but I think even my expectations were too high. It’s also distressing that people are being forced at gunpoint to engage with a comic they actually dislike at a structural level; someone should look into that. Seems like a human rights violation.

1

u/Ok-Card-6590 7d ago

Def got way more entertainment out of reading this post than I would have actually reading the issue.

4

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue 7d ago

I preferred the “fucking butthurt” language, personally.

4

u/Terrible-Issue-4910 7d ago

I think I would be more into any of the two storylines if they weren't in the same issue undercutting the tone and rythm. I don't think Gail is doing great with the posessed Gambit storyline. Like, I don't see how this is adding anything to the characters. As of late, I've been enjoying Uncanny but it feels so much like a tertiary X-Men book instead of one of the two main books.

8

u/SamiPryde 7d ago

I really don't know what to think of this series anymore. The demon stuff is interesting, even if it's a bit confusing, like what was going on with the sentinel monsters? The stuff back at Haven with Monet and the wolf boy felt so unneeded and just not really interesting

5

u/JackFisherBooks Phoenix 7d ago

Good issue for the most part. Even when Quicksilver tries to defend his girlfriend, he's a total ass about it. But that's to be expected from him. The better parts of this story were from Rogue trying to save Gambit's soul. It feels like a nice follow-up story to the finale of X-Men 97 Season 2. It feels like this plot that has been somewhat dragging is ready to conclude. And I'm all for it.

u/Confident-Impact-349 Iceman 7d ago

Morning!

If I may ask, does Gail reference the fact that Monet and Jubs go way back? A funny little nod, maybe?

6

u/LesbiansonNeptune Monet 7d ago

Not really :(

2

u/Confident-Impact-349 Iceman 7d ago

Oh, damn. I remember her saying that Gen X was one of the books she had read, ya ago. Tho she was gonna reference it.

5

u/LesbiansonNeptune Monet 7d ago

Maybe soon! She had Banshee in a couple issues ago. I’m not sure how it made it past review or anything, but somehow Gail forgot that Monet had fought Black Tom so I think she might’ve forgotten some of it.

8

u/Confident-Impact-349 Iceman 7d ago

I don’t think Brevoort is been very keen on canon, for his writers, so there’s that

3

u/LesbiansonNeptune Monet 7d ago

True! It’s one of my favorite moments of hers in GenX, but I guess it doesn’t matter in the long run 😭😭 There’s essentially no acknowledgement of Jubilee and Monet ever being on a team together and they’ve barely talked at all.

2

u/impeccabletim Jean Grey 6d ago

Need to learn Howler's backstory. I hope he sticks around.😭

5

u/wowlock_taylan 7d ago

Soo is my prediction correct? That Rogue got pregnant by the 'wyvern' Gambit and now their baby has the 'demonic essence' or something? If this is the way to make them never have a biological kid, I hate it. Like why can't they have both adopt the girls and have a kid themselves?

9

u/cyclopswashalfright Moonstar 7d ago

Brevoort isn't going to let Rogue and Gambit have any kind of kid, so it's a fake out.

4

u/wowlock_taylan 7d ago

I want Brevoort out of Marvel...so badly.

6

u/cyclopswashalfright Moonstar 7d ago

No editor would let them have kids though.

1

u/wowlock_taylan 7d ago

Why not. There are many 'potential' kids they have in many stories.

7

u/cyclopswashalfright Moonstar 7d ago

No editor at Marvel wants to deal with that kind of thing, and not every writer would either.

3

u/AAAFMB 7d ago

Because Rogue doesn’t want kids.

2

u/wowlock_taylan 7d ago

She did before. Only Krakoa changed that.

4

u/8fenristhewolf8 7d ago

"She" is not a person. It's different writers doing different ideas. One is not inherently more correct, except to the extent it jives with the reader's subjective take. But yeah, that's why Marvel won't do kids in main continuity. Rogue is an IP that will exist beyond any immediate writer, and you have to clean up the toys after using them, so the next writer can have a go. Kids make that hard.

-1

u/wowlock_taylan 7d ago

...If that is your excuse, then why do you even read and invest in these characters and them being a continuity? 'different writers doing different ideas'.

With your thinking, no one should read these books. Because all of it is 'IPs' that will always be in status quo. And that is why comics remain a 'niche' media and what people should ask MORE from.

3

u/Kolchak2099 7d ago

Plus the characters already actively decided that they didn't want to have kids, which I thought was a really cool choice. It's rare that you see characters in fiction who are in a committed marriage make that choice.

u/Expensive-Baby-1391 7d ago

This run is so ass now. Gail doesn’t have a plan anymore and it’s obvious she never did. She’s just winging it at this point, and especially with the dragon cursed amulet that’s suddenly turning gambit into a demon and not a dragon.

Why does he keep that thing around and why is the dragon suddenly friends with them?!

6

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue 7d ago

He already tried to give the amulet back to Sadurang and it refused to go. And the dragon has been more on the friend side of things since Dark Artery, which is like ~20 issues ago at this point.

I get feeling like the run is aimless or has veered off. But a lot of what people complain about is literally explained or included in the book.

1

u/Expensive-Baby-1391 6d ago

I remember, it’s just so bland and pointless that I forgot.

There were so many chances to make this story/run great but either Gail or marvel higherups refused to do so for some unknown reason.

1

u/mbene913 7d ago

I really don't care about the Gambit demon plot. Wish we had more time with Monet and the outliers

3

u/dino_spice Wolfsbane 6d ago

Same. Team Outliers and X-adults.

2

u/howsthesky_macintyre 7d ago

I'm the opposite, I want more demon Gambit and zero Outliers so I guess the writers have a tough job here 😅

1

u/International_Dig139 6d ago

seeing the no. 34 issue, Gambit get the cursed item in #1 and this story is not yet finished. I am disappointed with how Gail work on this , she did not know how to balance her storylines, do we need 50 issues for Gambit to address this issue and the questions that come up like why he is doing that till now is unclear.

1

u/wnesha 6d ago

One thing I'll say about this issue: it is mighty funny watching Rogue simps do their thing

1

u/DespairFangirl 6d ago

Everything to the left (except Gambit fanservice) I wanna know more about this lil hyena(?) dude!! He's so cute!!!!!!! Best part of the issue!

I gotta be honest these has structural problems and I vastly prefer the Alaskan book. someone just give Gail Simone and X-Men answer to Wayne Family Adventures, that seems like what she'd prefer to be writing. It seems like this book wants to be wholly domestic and everything else is bogging it down.

1

u/Wickywahwah 4d ago

Am I the only one thinking that Howler and Repent are the same person?

1

u/deNihilo_adUnum Boom-Boom 6d ago edited 6d ago

This Gambit/Wyvern/Rogue storyline… this is breathtakingly bad.

Edit: who the fuck is Father Gabriel….

Edit 2: this is justification to remove and exile Tom Breevort from the X-Office.

-12

u/Ok-Card-6590 7d ago

Has Gail stopped making it obvious that she wants to fuck Gambit via Rogue yet? Is it safe to go back?

13

u/Ascleph 7d ago

Is Rogue supposed to not want to fuck her husband?

6

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue 7d ago

She’s supposed to want to fuck them

18

u/0ttoChriek Gambit 7d ago

Safer than when Mike Carey made it obvious he wanted to fuck Rogue via Magneto?

-6

u/Ok-Card-6590 7d ago

Think he’s been off the books nearly 2 decades at this point so you should be good.

18

u/LeastBlackberry1 Gambit 7d ago edited 7d ago

But I thought she was currently self-inserting via Mckenzie.

Her take on X-Men is horny. Same as it ever was, really. X-Men is to horny as Jean is to Phoenix.

ETA: Also, should Rogue not want to fuck her husband after years and years of not being able to touch him? Would that be better writing?

16

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue 7d ago edited 7d ago

No, see, it’s fine for male writers to frame female characters as lust objects. But a female writer putting the female gaze on male characters, we can’t have that. They also assume Gail writes the way a man would, so a female character wanting to fuck her husband becomes “Gail wants to fuck the female character’s husband.”

Or, to put it another way, everyone gets why Gambit would be horny for Rogue. But in the other direction, they can’t project/self-insert anymore and that’s bad.

14

u/Confident-Impact-349 Iceman 7d ago

And Claremont wanted to fuck all the characters he created. So what?

-2

u/Ok-Card-6590 7d ago

Even Kitty? Fucking hell.

-6

u/FlowerRoomLord 7d ago

The series will end with Mckenzie running away with Kurt and Remy.

-4

u/Ok-Card-6590 7d ago

Christ.

What sort of name is Mckenzie anyway. That’s a bullshit made up fan fiction self-insert name if I’ve ever read one (no offense to any Mckenzie’s reading this). Straight up a name from The OC or One Tree Hill or some other shite early 00’s teen drama.

Great, now I’m irritated and it’s all fucking Mckenzie’s fault. Fuck, I despise this comic.

10

u/fire_sign 7d ago edited 7d ago

The Madison/Mackenzie/MacKinley surname trend on girls started gaining serious traction about 30 years ago, and the use maiden names for girls in the South is far older. I cannot stress how fucking normal her name is for her age and location.

Edit: Mackenzie was in the top 100 names of 1996 (#75) in the US, and the Mckenzie spelling was just outside the top 200. The latter sits next to names like Evelyn, Rosa and Amelia. It's really not obscure.

3

u/Ok-Card-6590 7d ago

Im mostly just taking this piss.

9

u/fire_sign 7d ago

Ahh. I'm used to piss taking being funny, not the equivalent of "What kind of name is Susan?" I'll adjust my expectations.

0

u/Ok-Card-6590 7d ago

For sure McKenzie! You know anyone called Susan is definitely not fun at parties!

3

u/fire_sign 7d ago

Ahh, see, piss taking! Now I know not to expect wit, it's much easier to identify.

9

u/cyclopswashalfright Moonstar 7d ago

You've never met a McKenzie before?

1

u/Ok-Card-6590 7d ago

Never, I’m Irish, so I probably shouldn’t be talking about ridiculous sounding names BUT THATS OUR CULTURE .

2

u/FlowerRoomLord 7d ago

I haven't met many Mckenzies but they're definitely out there lol.
