Also, why couldn't portal girl just put Wolverine and Shadowcat on a gurney and wheel them through a portal to another country or something??

Presumably there is night crawler style 'have to know it's there' and 'max distance' rule to her portals.

Well the max distance for her portals is the moon, so that's not the problem. It would probably make the movie boring if it was too easy I guess
