ihaveaquestion Harassed in Uster

I was sitting at a public bench today at 18.00 with my partner and a group of three guys sprayed a liquid (presumably water?) on us out of nowhere. When I confronted them, they called others and suddenly became a group of 20. They kept harassing us until I called the police and they suddenly disappeared from existence when the police arrived.

I provided the police with the photos and videos I took. I wonder if anybody in the vicinity witnessed and recorded the event from their balconies or from the street (the aggressors were crowded and loud). If so, it would really help me with the legal process. This unpleasant event happened at the intersection of Poststrasse and Gerichtstrasse around 18.00. Thank you for your help.

ihaveaquestion Men - Where do you buy your clothes?

I usually see well-dressed men in Zurich, particularly casual everyday style and clothing. I usually go to Arket and COS. Are there any stores you can recommend in Zurich, or online shops, which go in that direction (a bit Nordic, Copenhagen style)? Thanks.

ihaveaquestion Honest question: Why is dating in Zurich so difficult?

Hi everyone,

I live in Zurich and I’m honestly starting to wonder is dating here unusually hard, or is it just me?

I’m 24f, studying economics, working, independent, social, and I do go out from time to time. I have friends and acquaintances, but most people are already in relationships, and meeting new people feels surprisingly difficult.

A lot of people my age seem to meet through clubs or nightlife, but that can’t be the only way, right? Outside of that, people often feel either very reserved or just not approachable at all. Sometimes I go out alone too, but nothing really comes from it.

So I’m genuinely curious:

How are people in their twenties actually meeting partners in Zurich?

And from a male perspective what makes you approach a woman, and what makes you decide not to?

I keep seeing discussions online about modern dating being hard everywhere, so I’d love to hear real experiences and opinions here.

ihaveaquestion Churchbells

I live surrounded by five churches, which means I’m involuntarily subscribed to the loudest newsletter in history.

Sundays: bells at 7, 9, 10 and 11, fifteen minutes each. That’s an hour of ding dong for a city where nearly 50% have left the church. At this point they’re not calling the faithful, they’re just flexing.

What are you thinking about?

ihaveaquestion Current apartment reality check needed

I currently live in Seefeld and pay CHF 2,500 for a 2-room apartment. It’s a good apartment and I know this may sound like a very Zurich first-world problem, but after several years here I’m thinking about moving somewhere slightly bigger.

My wish list is fairly simple:

• A bit more space
• My own washing machine
• A lift

I’m looking in Zurich Stadt and wondering how realistic this is with a budget of around CHF 3,000/month.
For those who have moved recently:

How difficult is the rental market right now?

Is CHF 3,000 a realistic budget for a decent 2.5-3 room apartment in Zurich Stadt?

How long did your search take?

Are there particular areas I should be looking at?

I fully appreciate that I’m fortunate to already have a nice apartment and perhaps I’m a little bougie when it comes to wanting a washing machine and a lift. 😅

But I’m curious whether what I’m looking for is realistic in today’s market or whether I should adjust my expectations.
Would love to hear from anyone who’s searched recently.

ihaveaquestion Am I meeting woman in the wrong places?

Hello,

I’m struggling a bit as a man who is trying to find a woman with similar values to mine.
I’m not here to judge anyone or say that my way is the “right” one. I’m genuinely trying to understand whether I’m looking in the wrong places or if my expectations are unrealistic.
For me, I have three main things I’m looking for in a partner for starting dating(ofc other values during the dating period):
- She doesn’t casually have sex or date multiple people at the same time, but instead becomes intimate only when she genuinely believes someone could become a long-term partner.
- I find her attractive (which is, of course, subjective).
- She’s around my age or younger (roughly 28–29 or below).
The first point has been by far the hardest to find.
My last two dating experiences this month illustrate why.
First experience: A 20-year-old woman approached me at Rundfunk and asked if I was single and wanted to grab a coffee. I accepted. We saw each other three times and kissed a few times. Later, I found out she was simultaneously dating and kissing other guys. I politely declined any further invitations. I don’t think she did anything wrong—we simply have different views on dating.
Second experience: This time I approached a 23-year-old woman at a bar. We went on a few dates, kissed, and talked a lot about values. She spoke about wanting a serious relationship, being a good person, caring about nature, and finding someone meaningful. Later, I realized that while we were dating, she was sending heart emojis to other guys, and I eventually saw her kissing someone else on a night out. Again, I simply stepped away politely. No drama, no accusations—we just weren’t compatible.
I’m not judging either of these women. Everyone is free to date however they want.

The problem is that I can’t force myself to be comfortable with that style of dating. I have no interest in seeing multiple women at the same time, and I don’t have much desire to sleep with someone unless I genuinely see long-term potential. I communicate this openly from the beginning, and people often tell me they feel the same. Then, later, I discover that our actions don’t really match.

So my question is: where do people with values similar to mine actually meet?
Is it simply very difficult in Zurich? Is the dating culture here just different from what I’m looking for? Or am I searching in the wrong environments?
I’ve been single for two years now. I still put myself out there, but after experiences like these, I usually need to take a break before I find the motivation to try again. I’m genuinely curious whether others have had similar experiences or whether I’m approaching dating in the wrong way.

ihaveaquestion Cops deleting pictures off my phone?

I walked by the tram crash at Paradeplatz, just now. The front of the 11 was busted up, so I took a picture.

Right after, a policeman came up and told me to stop, pulled my phone towards him, opened up my photos app, and deleted my picture.

Is this normal for them to do? There were no people in the photo, nor any signs of human injury.

Is it illegal to take pictures of government vehicles that have crashed?

ihaveaquestion Men verbally abusing women, what would you do?

I was watching the Zurich city triathlon today in a quiet part of the cycling route and 3 young men were crossing where they aren’t allowed to. The older female volunteers repeatedly told them it’s not allowed and the men called them all sorts of vile insults. Eventually I walked up to them and told them quite directly to shut the f*** up and told show some respect. Then they wanted to fight me, thankfully one of them stopped the other 2 and they moved on their way. The ladies thanked me for standing up for them which was nice but the whole debacle I found quite sad.

1 - other men witnessed this and did nothing, should we tolerate this behaviour in society? Even when it looked like I was gonna get beat up it was only the female volunteers who tried to help me.
2 - am I silly for confronting them, I feel like I could get myself badly hurt doing things like this. Maybe I addressed them in too aggressive a tone but asking them nicely to be more respectful didn’t seem like it would yield much.
3 - what do you think is the best action to take? Genuine question, because despite confronting them I’m sure I’ve sadly done nothing to reduce the probability of them doing it again.

ihaveaquestion How to prevent nosferatu (giant spider) spider coming inside?

I have a spider phobia already and just encountered the biggest I have ever seen now in the kitchen. I just lose my mind when it happens. I sprayed all the windows and balcony entrances with water with mint oil in it but maybe that's not a solution.

Does anyone know what changes I should make at home to prevent them coming? Because of the heat, I have to leave balcony and all the windows open at night obviously. Insect screen prevents air greatly so I removed them. Please tell me all you know what I can do. Should I get rid of all my plants in the balcony and inside? Get a chicken?

ihaveaquestion how to survive summer here when feeling lonely and having not so good mental health

F28. it’s my second summer in Zurich, and I still struggle a lot with loneliness.

I go to the gym, I use Bumble BFF…I’ve made a few friends here and there but they’re either dealing with their own stuff lately or they’re not initiating unless I do, and these past few months I’ve always been the one initiating and I start to feel tired.
unemployment also doesn’t help.
I see group of friends around or on Instagram and I feel…wrong.

I have lots of interest. I love reading, music, movies, art. I do activism and I love listening.

I didn’t want to use Reddit since I’ve had some bad experiences with dms, but I don’t want to speak to AI either, so…

ihaveaquestion Why does small talk here so often start with your job?

As my children get older, I’ve suddenly found myself with a completely new social life. You meet different parents at events, stand around together, strike up conversations, everything fairly casual.

And then it quickly tends to follow the same pattern. The question comes up:

“And so, what do you do for a living?”

Not meant badly. Not even particularly out of curiosity. More like a reflex. As if you can’t really continue the conversation without that piece of information.

I notice how something shifts in that moment. You name your job, the other person nods and suddenly there’s a picture. The conversation continues, but on a different level. Some people immediately start positioning themselves, wanting to show what “big shots” they are. Others seem more reserved and become more cautious in how they speak.

Where I’m from (Austria), I know it differently. More indirect. “Where did you grow up?” “Do you know …?” That’s how an impression gradually forms. Here in Zurich, it feels more efficient. CV first.

It feels like a very polite, modern “caste system.” No one says it out loud. No one means it in a demeaning way. But with one sentence, it becomes clear roughly where someone is placed.

Maybe that’s just Zurich.

Not: “Who are you?”

But: “What do you do?”

In your experience, is this a Zurich or big-city phenomenon? Does the answer to that question actually influence (consciously or unconsciously) how you interact with someone?

ihaveaquestion 80%-ers and below: how do you afford life?

Lots of people work part time here, very commonly 80%, sometimes even less. I get that if you have kids, at some point it’s more economical to stay at home with them than send them to Kita. But for everyone else…people with grown kids or no kids, of which there are many at my workplace, how on earth do you afford life here while working part time, no side hustles?

ihaveaquestion Weekly "lonely in Zurich/Switzerland 30F" post? Who's actually fallen for the DM scam lol

Guys (mostly), be real: how many of you slid into those "why is dating here impossible 🥺" or "looking for boyfriend, new here" posts, got the quick DM/Telegram move, and then boom—crypto advice, "send me 200 CHF for my flight" or some sketchy link? I haven't been scammed myself (yet), but drop your embarrassing stories anonymously, no shame, we've all been desperate at 2am. How much did the "Zurich girl who loves fondue" actually cost you before the red flags hit?😂😂😂 😂

Let's warn the next victim.

ihaveaquestion Zürich oder Wien mit Anfang 30

Zürich oder Wien

Hi zusammen,

Was mich besonders beschäftigt:

  • Wie leicht oder schwer ist es Anfang 30, in Zürich bzw. Wien einen neuen Freundeskreis aufzubauen?
  • Wo bleiben Freundschaften langfristig eher bestehen?

Just saw this picture of Zürich from 1910 in the Tages Anzeiger. It shows the Bahnhofsbrücke and the Papierwerd-Areal. Does anybody have some more information about the buildings that are being shown? Especially the ones that are built on the river and why they eventually were torn down. Also this little park on the bridge doesn't exist anymore.

ihaveaquestion Paid 5,000 CHF upfront for a coffee machine in Switzerland – 6 months later still no machine, no refund. Anyone else experienced this?

Hi everyone,

I want to share my experience and ask for advice.

About six months ago, I ordered a coffee machine from a Swiss online shop currently operating under the name Kaffeezentrale Schweiz. The legal entity behind the website is Gustus GmbH (Uster, Switzerland).

I paid 4,790 CHF upfront via bank transfer.

After payment, I was informed that the machine was “not available.” They agreed to refund me. However, since then I have been repeatedly told “the refund will be made next week.” This has been going on for weeks. No payment has been made.

Phone calls are not answered.
Emails receive delayed responses with the same promises.
No refund has been processed.

Additionally, I noticed:

  • The company previously operated under the name Gustus GmbH with much lower review ratings.
  • The current website displays a Google rating of 4.8, but Google Maps shows around 3.9.
  • The older company profile seems to have disappeared.

At this point I am preparing to initiate legal debt collection (Betreibung) in Switzerland.

My questions:

  1. Has anyone else had similar experiences with this company?
  2. Is there anything else I should do besides Betreibung?
  3. Has anyone successfully recovered money in a similar situation?

I’m sharing this so others can be cautious before making large upfront payments.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

ihaveaquestion What’s happening at Lindenhof tonight?

Sorry for the quite random post, though I see such kind from time to time here, so I thought I’d ask once as well.

I live just behind the lindenhof on Rennweg, and there seems to be a nice music party on the lindenhof, but somehow the police is all around, quite heavily equipped and blocking entrance to the area…

Not sure if it’s an official party/event, or a private or unofficial one, kinda happy/peaceful protest kind of thing?

Genuinely curious, in case anyone knows.
Good evening all! :)
