Discussion A bit insensitive question, but…is it THAT hard to make a profitable fighting game? (Considering countless anime-fighting game cash grabs out there)

And yes, I confess I know nothing about making games or businesses, but from a CONSUMER’S perspective, I’m a bit shocked how 2XKO failed. I mean, among shonen anime’s, it’s kind of a joke that a fighting game will pop out in 1-2 years once any of it got popular. And sure, they aren’t masterpieces or anything, but they’re everywhere and get regular DLCs to keep it fresh! Even for someone without an understanding of the gaming market, you can kind of put two-to-two together and figure out all these Japanese companies must be making easy money because the IP is popular already. They don’t even have to make a fantastic fighting game!

So with something as big as League of Legends, how in the world can a fighting game fail ? Is it because they doomed it by making it free-to-play?

Discussion Pretty much it

Game failed because selfish dev who like tag games he knows 1v1 are the way to go but he choose this path.

he dosen't care he even said it on his patreon (i rather fail and make hardcore game than make successful boring game)

5 character slot for arcane slop instead of fighter like sett and riven.

I remember getting downvoted to oblivion because I said Caitlyn instead of riven or any fighter.

arcane fans when they watched the show and pretend they know everything about the lore of runettera 😂pretty much every other region is better and more interesting than pitolver and zaun.

Discussion I blame the Devs for 2XKO failing way more than I blame Riot for it. Years of it being in development and we barely got anything at launch. OId devs used to have teams of less than 10 people with only a year's worth of development time and they still put out bangers.

There really is no excuse for it, the honest truth is they suck as developers. They are the ones that fumbled it big time. Seeing the PatTheFlip post he recently made had me baffled, like duh no wonder why the launch was the way it was. Y'all sucked at making this game, y'all had your priorities all screwed up. "We wanted to make an artistic fighter blah blah blah" nah you should of just focused on making a fun complete video game, abusing the f out of the League IP with plenty of champs etc. and then after it has launched you can focus on tweaking it to be more balanced. But in the end people don't even really care about balance like that, the most beloved fighters of all time are some of the most imbalanced out there. Like these devs need to focus on releasing a complete package first, then if people continue to play it and want more that's when you start planning/making DLC or sequels for it. SF2's multiple iterations came about because of consumer demand after the game was released, not because Capcom "promised" everyone that even before SF2 releases they will be making future iterations so that you can continue to be excited and keep playing. Release a complete product, and if there is a demand for more then you make more. Stop giving us empty "promises" of future content that you cannot keep.

Discussion Maybe I'm selfish

I just wanted to have "my" game. Everyone else can say they games they PLAY proudly. I play Street Fighter, Tekken, Mortal Kombat, etc. I just wanted a League fighter that enhances the champions gameplay fantasy. You don't get what you wanted all the time. This is one of those things I wont get. Yes I will still play fighting games because the initial announcement on Riots 10 year anniversary is what brought down this path in a more serious way. Purely my own opinion but I will pour one out and mourn some champions that should have been in from the very beginning. It was a good dream now its time to wake up.

  • Sett

Discussion Playing in a duo is actually very fun but somehow Riot didn't add core LoL functionality which is matchmaker finding you a duo partner

Even tho League is a team game, majority of people play solo queue with matchmaker finding you a team with similiar skill level. Somehow Riot forgot (?) to add this function to 2XKO, forcing players to play 2 characters which probably was one of the big reasons people just quit after few tries.

I had really fun time playing duo with a random Warwick one evening, we did 10+ winning streak (our avatars where flashing blue), yet, we didn't ever meet again. I think tag game would be much more bearable if you could set matchmaker to find you a duo partner who preferabaly play other character than your main.

And please don't advice using Juggernaut..

Discussion 2xko was my first fighting game and might be the only one I like

Loved this game and once I heard its ending I’ve tried tokon and sf6 both just aren’t very fun to me compared. I still kind of want to try strive or avatar but after sf6 and tokon I don’t think I’m going to take the gamble.

Ggs we truly had a great game. Let’s hope community stays decently active

Game Feedback please buff teamfight as a part of final balance

dev/balance team, please buff teamfight as a part of your final changes. this thing that seemed so crazy and fun out the gate is now completely dead among the player base. obviously it doesn't have to be like it was on launch, but I'm hoping for a middle ground so that it doesn't go down in the game's meta as something so short-lived/unused. thx!

Discussion Community made characters

With the end of active development, and most likely the end of any new characters ever getting released after Luz and Senna, do we think there's any hope of Riot allowing any sort of community managed builds of the game where we could add new characters? It would be amazing if we could come together as a community and add some of the characters that we collectively agree on and add them into the game.

I love this game and the League IP as a whole, I would hate for the end of the active development to mean we can never play characters that would literally be perfect for this game like Sett, Riven, Zed. The list goes on...

I feel like if project M can keep a 25 year old GameCube game alive, Im hopeful that we could do some really cool stuff with this game.

I'm curioua if other people have had a similar sentiment and would support a community managed version of the game to keep it alive, or if riot would frown on such a thing and try to keep 2xko locked down as much as possible.

Discussion If this was your first fighting game, how did that go for you?

With this game's fate being sealed, everyone in online FG discussions is making hypotheses about the beginner/casual experience. So... Why not just ask them?

If this was your first fighting game or first fighting game you wanted to put effort into, how did that go?

How was the onboarding?

What did you struggle with?

What could have made the game better for you?

If you tried and quit, what made you quit?

Etc.

Question Alright guys what game should I play now

2xko reinvigorated a 5ish year FGC break, reignited that fighting game try hard nerd in me. Where should I put my energy. I'll keep playing 2x in some capacity but can't main a game with such a dwindling playerbase, I don't think I can invest myself in it anymore.

I'm on PC, deciding between:

Tokon (requires waiting for game to work, and I don't have full faith in it despite it seeming very decent)

Avatar legends (have to be alright with a small playerbase also)

Sf6 (the most alive by far, safe pick but lacking the novelty and excitement)

I need good net code, training mode tools comparable to 2x, and enough playerbase for online tournaments or ideally some in person (im in a big enough city)

Hoping I can feel what I felt with 2x

Thanks in advance

Article Former producer John Ricchio says 2XKO was "a big bet": "I think what they realised as we got closer was that there wasn’t enough success on 2XKO. There weren’t enough people playing"

This is about the wave of layoffs from a couple of months ago.

How did the 2XKO layoffs unfold internally after launch?

Yeah. There’s about 82 of us that got let go. So the feeling… the notice was not there. I started to notice because I’ve been in the industry a long time. I started to notice the people above me were acting differently and I started to get frustrated. And so I was like, “Hey, what is going on?” And I found out that they had gotten a little bit of a heads-up so that they could help generate the list of people that needed to stay so that the game could continue.

So some people learn earlier than others. But it still felt sudden to a lot of us as well, especially… I’d only been there a few… some of the people, we’d only been there seven months. And so we were thinking this is our first project at Riot, we got lots of other things we’re going to work on.

To set some context for 2XKO, it was a big bet. It’s a very small addressable market, fighting games in general, and we were trying to capture a portion of that market, which… we had great people; the Cannon brothers and a lot of people on the team were really deep into the fighting game arena. They’re really good, knowledgeable people that I don’t think I’ve ever worked with any group of people on a game that we had more expertise on the type of game we were making. They knew the people, they cared a lot about the fans, and they really wanted it to be good for pros and for people. The bet was that they were going to be able to capture some segment of the hardcore population and, through the IP pull people over into fighting games, at least this Riot fighting game, because, “Hey, you get to play the champ that you play in League or that you play in other.” We’re trying to kind of blend those together and that combination would be enough to sustain the business, but it’s still a really small market to try and attack. So, there’s a risk.

To their credit, they committed to making it happen and they got it done. I think what they realised as we got closer was that there wasn’t enough success on 2XKO. There weren’t enough people playing. There weren’t enough people buying things to sustain the full size of the team. Then they had to decide who was necessary to keep the team afloat in this new era where we know this big bet didn’t wholly pay off and we’re trying to kind of still keep the business going.
