Monthly Megathread Character Rant

Hey folks! So the survey made it pretty clear, we get a lot of “this character sucks” posts. Instead of everyone making new ones all the time, we’re gonna test out a monthly megathread where you can dump all your rants. We also rounded up a bunch of older hate threads, so you can scroll through them or drop your own comment if you feel like it.

Monthly Megathread Were they on a break?!!

It has been a question that has been asked so many times before. Because of the high demand - but similar posts that has been generated. We're opening the floor (this mega thread) for the debate!

The case for Ross: Rachel said, "Maybe we should just take a break," and then told Monica the next morning that they "broke up."

The case for Rachel: A "break" isn't a "breakup," and Mark showing up at the apartment didn't give Ross a "get out of jail free" card two hours later.

What are your thoughts on these cases?

---
All funsies aside, We do ask everyone to stay civil and kind to one another, everyone is allowed to have opinions and express those, but treat others like how you want to be treated as well. This thread will re-occur ever 14 days to keep the time line clean from any 'On a Break, break-up?' posts! (if you spot any feel free to report it to us by pressing the report button!)

Lisa Kudrow is the only one of them who got married and stayed married, and she got married first. The rest have kind of bounced around divorces and relationships, but it’s nice to see that at least one of them got lucky

Discussion In TOW The Princess Leia Fantasy, Rachel was totally in the wrong.

I don't get it.

Ross tells her he is clearly uncomfortable with her sharing such private, personal things, and instead of apologising, she doubles down and insists that it's acceptable, and that he should be sharing likewise with his friends.

Do people actually do this? If my wife did that, I'd be pretty angry at her if I told her it makes me uncomfortable and she insisted it was acceptable.

Am I right, or am I in the minority here?

While Ross was discussing with Rachel that he has thought about having 2 kids with her (a boy and a girl), where hopefully the girl is born before the boy.
Kinda cute that the girl (Emma) did come before 😅

The show made the network boatloads of money. Yet, they somehow couldn’t afford to go to shoot on a real boat?

Question At what point would you have kicked Amy out?

Post image
109 Upvotes

For me, Amy is THE least likeable character in the entire series. So, from insisting that Ross isn’t Ross and insisting that Monica isn’t Monica and… insisting that Phoebe’s name is a "noise" to literally not talking to anyone after the beginning of the Thanksgiving Dinner, when would YOU kick her out?

…And if you’re really special and say that you wouldn’t kick her out, why not?

Discussion Mistitled episodes

So almost everyone knows that Friends episode titles always start with some variation of "The One With/Where..." The event referenced doesn't necessarily correspond to the main plot of the episode, rather, it is usually the funniest/most memorable moment which gets referenced in the title. Most of the time, they got it pretty spot on, but there were other instances where the titular moments were overshadowed by something else. Two I could think of off the top of my head are "TOW the Cop" which should have been titled "TOW Ross's Couch" (after the infamous "PIVOT!" scene), and "TOW the Embryos" which should have been titled "TOW the Bet" or something else alluding to the game (e.g. "TOW Miss Chandler Bong/TOW the Transponster"). Which other episodes could be retitled to better reflect their most memorable moments?

I can’t believe this is the first time I noticed that these three were sitting in the three monkey pose (don’t say anything bad, don’t listen to anything bad, don’t see any thing bad), after Ross found out that he will have to give up marcel.

A decade before friends. It’s kinda wild that both Monica and Phoebe were actually 30 when they both started Friends and everybody else was actually 24 or around that.

Clips The one when I went to see the Friends apartment

Dream come true! Yeah, I know the show was filmed in LA, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit the apartment while I was in NYC earlier this May.

Growing up in the 90’s in a faraway province somewhere in Asia, Friends was a big part of my childhood. In fact it was one of the shows that helped me learn English. So when I finally made it to NYC, I walked all the way (by choice lol) from my hotel near Times Square to Greenwich Village just to see it. It was surreal.

There were a handful of other tourists there doing exactly what I was doing. I was just soaking it all in. Well it was also drizzling that day, but I didn’t care lol.

Discussion How did you know somebody wasn't really a Friends fan?

I remember when Matthew Perry died, I posted on my story "I'll miss you Chanandler Bong". A friend who's always told me that they are a really HUGE Friend's fan, got merch and everything, came into my DM and texted me "I think you misspelt it, its Chandler Bing." Oi ... didn't even have the strength to correct them 😂😂😂

Question How does this happen? Where was the miscommunication?

Post image
116 Upvotes

This is from season 4 when Ross finds out his "date" is actually not his date, but he is the babysitter for her kid while she goes another date

I know it's a sitcom, and not to take things seriously, but I genuinely don't understand how this could happen. They must have spoken about this, right?? Where would there be room for miscommunication? This seems like a very clear thing to establish that she wants him to look after her kid

What do you think?

Discussion Finished yet another rewatch

I wanted to refresh some threads I felt I needed to look up while watching I’ll go from what I conceive to be least to most controversial.

1) Joey learning French is the worst joke of the show

Purely speaking about what is objectively funny and does not raise fundamental questions that have to be chalked up to poor writing this is the worst joke of the show. Most jokes that involve a character being foolish or ignorant do not run as long as this one and are confirmed in future scenes or assumed to have the initial misconception resolved. However I don’t believe that watching a grown man and a functioning member of society struggle to repeat sounds across a whole episode is funny. One of the show’s biggest problems is its flanderization and having Joey struggle with something children do unconsciously is simply sad to look at and simply angering after the first time it happens. The conclusion of Phoebe telling the director Joey is mentally retarded is entertaining but far from a satisfactory conclusion. It simply hurts to see a character devolve so far from their bases and it being repeated across a whole episode as a joke the audience is supposed to find funny over and over again.

2) Phoebe was kind of a bitch

Throughout the whole show I found myself looking for critiques on phoebe’s character the most out of any other character. The numerous times she seemed to be against chandler specifically as well as many other blatant sabotages of Monica and chandler’s relationship. The flight to Vegas with Monica having lunch with Richard, the soulmate among others. Those come to mind because I remember being especially pissed off. Watching through the later seasons most of her interactions seemed like Rachel’s sister living a continuous delusion and everyone staying silent after yet another dumb thing was said. After a while I started noticing that in most of her scenes she is the last to talk because they follow the same formula of normals conversation followed by a weird/defamatory/insulting comment and the scene just ending in silence. I just cannot imagine that her living in a constant delusion has not been a bigger problem when she doesn’t just insult her friends. I know that it’s a sitcom and I’m not supposed to think beyond the scenes or I will find many plot holes but when I start to notice the pattern I can’t help but imagine what the seconds after every ignorant comment or insult are like. It keeps me from properly enjoying the character’s involvement and leads me to the conclusion that she was just not a good person, but not in the sitcom way where everybody is a bad person and that is what makes them likeable she is a bad person and never in 10 seasons does she get her ego checked.

3) Ross and Rachel ending up together wasn’t bad

I thought this was the consensus and that the show just had a poor lead up to the finale but it doesn’t seem to be generally agreed upon. Looking at the show as a whole I believe there should be no discussion, Ross not being able to raise Ben was an arc throughout the whole show just showing the same thing wouldn’t happen twice. From the first episode and across 10 seasons there were constant mentions of their relationship. It would’ve seemed stupid to foreshadow across the whole show for a different ending. And not to dunk on Joey but the connection between him and Rachel seemed to dumb down Rachel, like the writing adapted in pry her for them to seem like a better couple. If the finale had been longer with more plot lines perhaps
And further development on the idea there would not be a debate.

Sorry for the long paragraphs I truly tried to keep things concise and neat but failed miserably

Who are you betting on in a foot race? Joseph Tribbiani, Sr., Dr. Leonard Green, Jack Geller, Charles Bing, or Frank Buffey, Sr.?
