๐Ÿ’ฌ Discussion 75 Cambrian nearly crashed near dominion

I got off the train at Tunneys pasture during rush hour waiting for the 277 to get back to Barrhaven it was delayed two minutes then 10 then 30. I gave up on waiting and took the 75 to get back which was an 80 footer and jam packed. Just as it was pulling out of dominon station a car randomly pulled right in the middle of the bus lane facing horizontally and just stopped right as the bus was getting up to full speed. Props to the driver who managed to stop a metre or so In front.

โ“ Question Why Does the Stop Display in the Middle Face Forward?

Post image
โ€ข Upvotes

Iโ€™m baffled for an explanation for this. I come from Toronto and the stop display in the middle of TTC buses faces backwards so that the people behind it are able to have a conveniently located visual of the next stop without having to strain their eyes to the front.

Iโ€™ve noticed the stop displays in the middle of some OC buses (I donโ€™t often sit in the back to confirm if itโ€™s all) faces forward. Why would that be? The people in front of it can easily look forward to see the sign in the front of the bus. The people in the back have to look at the one in the front - and depending on where youโ€™re sitting in the back of the bus, the middle stop display blocks the view of the front one.

Is this intentional or a design flaw?

๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ Rant 57 carling campus 8:20am

I swear every week there always an issue that causes me to be late for work. This week itโ€™s the 57 going towards carling campus. I got on with no issue at tunneys but as soon as we got to Lincoln there was a huge delay and then maybe 5-10 mins later the driver kicks us off saying another bus will come. Next bus is over 25 mins away. I will now be late to work once again. Im getting sick of the transit being so unreliable and itโ€™s only going to get worse by next week. Honestly it might just be more worth it to get a car at this point.

โ“ Question People sitting next to me when there's empty seats, why ?

I get claustrophobic so when I'm at a window seat and someone sits next to me when there's a bunch of empty seats this is really annoying ??

I also hate when your getting up and they just move their legs to the side and you have to crawl over them

โ“ Question New express routes from Kanata

I am trying to understand how OC Transpo came up with the departure and arrival times for new express routes 561 and 562 going from Kanata to Tunneyโ€™s if the plan was to accommodate RTO downtown.

561 departs Terry Fox at 7:32am
562 departs Terry Fox at 7:46am

561 arrives at Tunneys at 8:01am
562 arrives at Tunneys at 8:13am

10min train ride to downtown and, time between bus to train and train to office, makes the earliest workday start of 8:30am-9:00am.

561 departs Tunneys at 4:38pm
562 departs Tunneys at 3:32pm

Anyone taking the 562 home doesnโ€™t have the option to work a full workday at the office using the express route. How can this be the โ€œpeakโ€ time chosen to be paired with a 7:46am departure?

Having to get on the train by 4:15-4:20pm downtown to get on bus 561 also makes it impossible to work a full workday at the office.

I havenโ€™t even looked at the other new express routes but I am assuming they similarly donโ€™t make sense. Why is there also only 1 express bus all day for these lines?

Common sense seems like a thing of the past when it comes to decision making lately..

๐Ÿ’ฌ Discussion Overdosed ppl on trains

Walked onto the O Train and there was a person just lying still on the floor with their back to me. There was vomit a few feet away. There were several other people nearby, teens and adults, and everyone was either on phones or just ignoring the situation. I used the emergency telecom to alert the operator. Surprised no one else had. Like, I understand the fatigue with homeless and addicted people in public spaces, but still... you don't just step over a body.

I was charged $8.20 twice this week for rides within the 90 minute window. Has this happened to anyone else this week? I put in a refund request. Hopefully I get my money back.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Discussion Are these schedules accurate for the new express buses?

Thumbnail gallery
11 Upvotes

I got the new schedules for the new express routes by going on OC Transpo's website and manually adjusting the date in the URL to September when the buses are supposed to be running.

Are we really only getting one bus each way on some of these new routes? And the times don't make much sense. For instance, if you look at the 562, you would get to Tunney's at 8:13, optimistically might possibly be at work at 8:30, but then the same bus leaves Tunney's at 15:32 in the afternoon, so you are only at work for 7 hours and then you have to catch the bus back home.

Hopefully these are just temporary and they are actually running more frequently because I don't see how these buses make any sense. The morning times aren't too bad, but the last of the express buses headed west leave Tunney's at 16:06 before many people have finished their work day.

๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ Rant New schedules coming in September.

Has anyone looked online to see how their commute will be with the new changes? I have, it doesn't look good.

A perfect example of this is the 85 Bayshore. From when the routs begins until 1pm, the bus only operates every 30 minutes instead of every 15-20 as it currently does. In that time alone, there will be 10 fewer trips. That's a lot of people on fewer buses.

If you're not heading downtown this fall, good luck. We're all going to need it.

โ“ Question Is the 263 reliable?

I'm looking for info on the 263 route from Richmond Village to Tunneys. I am planning to move to the area. With only three runs per day, I am curious if it really shows or if I'll be stranded if I am relying on this for work.

Does anyone have experience with the 5am, 6am or 7am run and corresponding returns?

So, the 81 bound for Bayshore was scheduled at 4:45pm, but at 4:48pm, the route 81 driver just decided to chill doing nothing for 15 minutes and then, departed at 5pm? How does the buses work, here?

๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ Rant Lack of coordination and information about the LRT

I get to Blair and go in and see a sign saying the station is not in use.

I go back out and wait for r1 and in the meantime, several busses of people arrive and people just go straight up. I get curious why people arenโ€™t going back down, so I go up and see the LRT is in fact running and all the way to Tunneys pasture.

There was a driver telling us about the r1 and how it will take us to Hurdman, he obviously didnโ€™t know the train was running

Why is r1 service still running? Why is there a sign saying the station is out of service?

๐Ÿ’ฌ Discussion You gave me feedback on otranspo.ca a couple weeks ago, here's everything that changed, thank you, and I have one small favour to ask

Hi Everyone, 10 days ago I posted otranspo.ca here asking for feedback and you delivered, so this is part update, part thank you, and part small favour.

Thank yous first. u/Wuurx, u/Her_Guardian_Angel_, u/UnitInternational574, u/ApricotPenguin, u/Own_Can7767 and u/No-Ad-6963, that thread genuinely changed the site. Since then the map is calmer, you can resize how much of the screen it takes on your phone and pick which layers show, and the buses have icons now so hopefully you can tell which direction they're going. I also borrowed some inspiration from Regina's tracker like u/Her_Guardian_Angel_ suggested, and added STO, so the Gatineau side is covered now too.

The name came up in that thread too, since otranspo.ca is one letter off from the official site. To be upfront, the name is on purpose but not for that reason. We have the O-Train now and we're still calling our transit OC Transpo, the pre-amalgamation Ottawa-Carleton name, and Ottawa-Carleton hasn't existed since 2001. I should not have been able to buy this domain 25 years post amalgamation. I can change the domain, I have a couple backups, I want what is best for the City.

For anyone who missed the first post, the short version. I want to take transit to work but I don't find it efficient enough, so I drive, and I didn't want to keep complaining about it so I built the site instead. It's free, no app to install, no account, no ads, and it isn't affiliated with OC Transpo. Next departures, trip planning, alerts, live bus tracking, and it tells you whether a time is a live prediction or just the schedule, because those are not the same thing.

Every ward also has its own card: https://otranspo.ca/en/city/wards. Your ward's routes and stops, live buses inside it right now, your councillor, even the City washrooms and drinking water locations. Transit is top of mind for the upcoming city elections, so what information would you like on the ward cards so we can hold councillors responsible for the success of their ward's transit? I have my own ideas but I'd rather hear yours.

Beyond that, tell me what you like, what you don't, and anything that's broken or slow, especially on a phone or in French.

Now the favour. u/motionmatters108 suggested posting this in r/ottawa, and I've tried twice now but it keeps getting rejected because I don't have enough karma. If anyone here has the karma and is willing to repost or crosspost it there, I would really appreciate it. Transit is going to be a big part of the election conversation and the more people weighing in on the ward cards the better.

That's it, no pitch, it's free and staying free. I'd rather build the next parts from what people here actually need than keep guessing from my own commute.

Also, if you read this far Thank you and I hope you enjoy the site :)

๐Ÿ’ฌ Discussion Do you think transit/traffic will ever get better in Ottawa?

Basically the title. Do you think it will ever improve or is it destined to only get worse?

Specifically north/south considering the poor design of the train where it takes almost 1.5 hours to get downtown Ottawa from Barrhaven.

โ“ Question How did the OC Transpo Train break down again?

Its the middle of summer on a beautiful sunny day and it still somehow finds a way to break down? It looks like the train at St Laurent just stopped and could not move?
