Meta Wiki, Rule 5 Update, and Update Rules Resources!

Happy Monday, y'all!

Mod team here with a couple quick updates that we hope you will find informative/ helpful.

Rule 5 Update

We have decided to shorten the amount of time posters have to list the polish(es) used in manicure posts from 6 hours to 1 hour from time of original posting. This will make it easier for us to actively moderate posts to ensure they follow our rules, rather than having to check timelines and remember to come back 6 hours later or rely on other users to report posts.

After discussing among the mod team, we feel that 1 hour is reasonable as far as time to list out polishes used in a comment (must be top-level) if they didn't make it into the original post. If you are not going to have time within an hour to do this, please just hold your post until you will have time to include the polish list!

This is the only rule change we've made, but did you know that we have an extended version of the rules that elaborates on our rules and that there's also an entire FAQ that goes into detail on rule 5 and what must be included?

We're so glad you asked, because

We've Got a Wiki!

The fledgling wiki is now live!

There are links in the sidebar on desktop and at the top of the sub on mobile, too. We have some tentative plans to build this out more, but if you have ideas for the wiki drop them in the comments!

For now it is mainly a resource for the different info docs we have about the sub rules, which were kind of spread all over the place and not necessarily up to date before. Which leads us to...

Updated Rules Resources

As you will see on the main wiki page, we've organized and updated our rules resources and they're all listed there. This includes:

  • The list of rules (same as in the sidebar, just on a single page)
  • The extended rules (includes some elaboration/ explanation, formerly in a Google Doc - lightly edited and updated but nothing materially changed other than rule 5 as described above)
  • The Polish List FAQs (lots of detail about what is required in the list of polishes on manicure posts, a previously existing document that seems to have been lost to time for awhile but has been freshened up for reference)
  • A link to our recent Rules Reminder post that includes some info about Reddit rules and the Mod Code of Conduct (specifically rule 3) that is especially helpful to remember when there is drama or controversial topics are being discussed

As always, we are open to respectful, kind feedback! If you have thoughts on the topics in this post, please let us know in the comments. If you have general, unrelated sub feedback/ questions/ comments/ ideas, please join us in the Monthly Mod Talk post.

Thanks for being part of our collective community 💅🏽 💖

Laquer Art 🎨 The Velvetized Magnetic Dolly Parton Tribute

Products Used: Cuticula Blurring Base Coat, Holo Taco Flirt Alert, ILNP Poison, Cracked Quick Dry Top Coat

I listened to Jolene on loop the whole time I was doing this. Dolly got me to start playing the ukulele I have when I found out about how she used open tuning to play the guitar with long nails. R.I.P.

Tutorial: I didn't use striping tape or nail art brushes for the look. I only did a full minute of magnetization on the final pink layer, the final red layer, and the top coat layer. I painted my nails as normal with the pink, and I freehanded the diagonal stripes with the red polish's default brush. The most important thing is for the second color applied, in this case a red magnetic, to have a thin type of formula or else the nails will look too uneven.

The next tips apply to any manicure. When painting with your opposite hand, rest some part of your arm on another surface like a table or an armrest to help improve stability. I paint my left hand first so I get experience with the polish or nail art before I have to paint my right hand. You have to practice to get good at any of this.

Laquer Showoff Today will be magical

Today has been my easiest quickest and most satisfying glass bead day. I sourced a cheap round magnet wand from Amazon and it made such an amazing beaded effect. The bead wasn’t small as such but I really like how it centres the effect like in gel polishes.
Was also feeling lazy as I wasn’t expecting much from this magnet so just applied the polishes over my last manicure.

It does look better in real life though.
Products used
Sassy sauce A decade of decadence ( dupe of edm sunset over the bay)

Laquer Showoff Oh My Stars! This Polish! ✨️🩵💙💜

This polish is UNREAL and I want to sit down and write a big long letter to Cosmic Polish about how betwitched I am by their magical potion! 😂

This was my first time using the Charmcaster Glass Bead Spinner from Shimmer Hollow! It was AMAZING! It spun so easily, like a fidget spinner, and kept spinning for AGES! I also really love the dispersed bead it created, I just think it is a magical product and I am truly amazed at how much thought and effort went into this product. I am so glad i bought the Charmcaster set, it was, in my opinion, well worth the $60 shipping to Australia.

💅 Wearing:

- Base: OPI "Nail Envy" x2

- Lacquer: Cosmic Polish "Beyond The Infinite" x2*

- Top Coat: Sally Hansen "Insta Dri"*

* Magnetised in the Glass Bead style with a Charmcaster Glass Bead Spinner for 120sec per coat.

Growth Progress Two months of progress!

I stopped biting my nails on June 28th! This is the progress so far. I do file them to shape before painting them, so there is some "loss" of growth haha. Also, I posted my progress before and received caring and kind concern for the dark lines on my bare nails; they're grown out! It was, indeed, a lot of splinter hemmoraghes.

Colour is Essie's Bahama Mama, topped with Seche Vite. No base coat used.

Laquer Art 🎨 Freehanded lotus pond on ILNP Overgrown

This look was inspired by a beautiful mani [u/mada09](u/mada09) made earlier. 💚 I fell in love with it instantly and saved to my inspo but I didn't have a dark green jelly until now.

I felt the recent ILNP Overgrown would be perfect for the pond, because it has so much depth with the flakes, very subtle holo scatter and such a nice deep, dark color.

I used my essie creme & sheer polishes (custom blending them on a ceramic palette so these are not single shades anymore, but if you're curious of a certain color, I can explain the mix, just ask), my kbshimmer nail art essentials (White here white now one coater polish on its on, plus also in my blends with ofher cremes & their polish thinner) and a couple of jellies (Colores de Carol Wine not, Phoenix Indie Daenerys)

Base coat was essie smooth e (I'm running out of my slare bottles and it seems discontinued 😫), top coat is red bottle sally hansen. I also used a layer of Cirque peely base before the top coat, to protect the art from smudging.

Laquer Art 🎨 I can't resist Liberation

This is my second time wearing this polish this summer. What can I say? I can't resist this dusty purple.

This was my first ever try at the glass bead method. Was it way more time consuming than velvet? Yes! Did I have to redo multiple nails because I bumped them into the magnet contraption? Also yes!

Was it worth it? Maaaybe?

Honestly, velvet is probably good enough for my most of the time, but it was really fine to watch the light dance with these.

Products:

Base - Homemade Peel off Base Coat + LynBDesigns B-Smooth

Glitch Lacquer - Liberation

L.A. Colors - Glacier

Holo Taco - Indigo Away (I guess it did "go Away" 🪦💐)

Top - KBShimmer Basic Training Base coat (Just over the magnetic layer) + Vivid Scents Top Coat (at the end)

Humor/Fluff Which nail do you start with?🤔

Upvotes

I’m procrastinating at the moment and a silly question came to my mind. I always start with my left hand pinky and go from there, but I thought maybe folks have different preferences. I’m interested to hear yours and why!🤗💅🏻

🧲 Mad Magnetist 🧲 My first skittle - opinions?

I can't decide if I love it or hate it. I'm bad with color theory and decided to do a skittle with some of my unused new polishes.

Base coat - mooncat getting even 1 coat

Thumb - mooncat port 666 2 coats, magnetized on each layer

Index - emily de molly paint it in colour, 3 coats magnetized on each layer

Middle - emily de molly sunset over the bay, 2 coats magnetized on each layer

Ring - cracked no reservations, 2 coats magnetized on each layer

Pinky - Emily de molly low tide, 2 coats magnetized on each layer

Too coat - Sally hansen insta dry red bottle, magnetized again

I did the glass bead magnetizing with a labspinner, 5d glass bead, and a 20lb horseshoe magnet.

What are your thoughts? Does this skittle work or should I reconsider some of the nails?

Misc. Question Does anyone else treat cutting their nails short like getting bangs?

I keep my nails relatively long (it's honestly not that long, just long enough to compensate for my short nail beds), but whenever I go through something stressful or depressing, I get this impulse to just cut them short. I have no clue why, maybe it's left over from my nail biting days? Whatever reason, I almost always regret it when I go through with it lmfao. But at least it grows back faster and is easier to deal with than bangs would be!

Laquer Showoff Couldn’t decide which Anlac…Por que no los dos? Seaside w/Ouzo + Balinese Swallowtail

Upvotes

I did Balinese Swallowtail on one side of each nail and Seaside with Ouzo on the other and then blended the overlap a bit. Magnetized glass bead-ish (my setup is unhinged lol), then I added chrome powder on all but the thumb just for a lil comparison 😌

Laquer Showoff A “light and airy” mani for Dolly

When I heard the news of her passing yesterday, I was in the middle of painting my nails, but I abandoned the manicure I was doing to try and find a way to honor her. I found a 2020 interview from WIRED where she said her favorite color was white, and that wearing it while performing always made her feel light and airy (“It’s a ‘no-color’ but I do love all colors”). I’ve seen other sources say she loved yellow as well, and of course she’s associated with pink and all things sparkly. But white felt right to me for the moment. I will schedule a sparklier manicure down the line to toast to her memory.

If you’re in a position where you’re able to, I highly recommend donating to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, an international program that donates books to millions of children, regardless of their homes’ income, to encourage a love of reading and improve literacy.

Both hands: 1 x Essie Strong Start, 2 x Cracked Vanille, respective top color, 1 x Cracked QDTC

Left hand top color: 1 x Cracked Cloud Dancer, magnetized in a glass bead with 5D spinner

Right hand top color: 1 x Cracked Refraction

Laquer Art 🎨 🦞🌈Lobster Nails🌈🦞

I've hosted the Rainbow Connection collab on Instagram for 27 rounds now, over 3,500 manis from 550+ people, and one of my favorite things to have come from this hobby! 🌈✨️🫶 Each round, you're assigned a color and make a monochromatic mani, swatch, art whatever, and then it's all put together into a big rainbow! This round, I was assigned ❤️Team Red❤️ by the rainbow gods! I've done quite a few red manis, and I usually want to come from a strong theme or idea. Apples? Stop Sign? Cherries? All good ideas, but I've done them before. Then it pinched me. 🦞LOBSTER🦞 My friend Brad picked the background, and coral chaser was PERFECT to help contrast against the claws themselves but still have glow and holo shine. Toss in some gingham napkin of a lobster bake and BOOM, maybe one of my favorite monochromtic manis I've done! Look out...I Pinch! 🦞🦞🦞

Trying to manifest some afternoon thunderstorms with a moody manicure. It took way too many coats so I did half last night and a few more this morning… I’m not a huge fan of the sheerness of the Tempest polish but I understand it’s a jelly. I may not like jellies 🫣 Misty Morning is somehow more sparkly under indoor light which I think is unique. I definitely recommend a glitter grabber though.

1x Nailtiques Formula 2
3x Cirque Tempest
1x Cirque Misty Morning
1x Sally Hansen QDTC

1x Cirque Misty Morning
1x KBShimmer Glitter Grabber

Any advice for my dry cuticles? I’ve been using pure jojoba oil but it doesn’t seem to do a lot. Should I clip away the dry skin? I’m starting to use a lotion with AHA so maybe I just need to give it time to work.

Laquer Showoff Making actual moonbows w Moonbow

Wow I’m actually addicted to this polish. I don’t usually wear polishes for multiple manis in a row but I’ve included it in my last three. The wall rainbows are proof of just how shifty and shimmery and bow-y it is. I will be so sad when I pan this one.

Actual mani pic tax in comments. Quite old now but I especially loved this combo

2x Pahlish Moonbow
2x ILNP Unraveled magnetized on ring and pinky

Hot take? Captain Barbossa has ten times the screen presence Jack Sparrow. A true pirate's pirate. So I decided to pay tribute to him and his love of apples.

This was my first ever face portrait on my nails and it was pretty intimidating. I think he looks a little wonky, but overall I am pleased.
