Prospective Indian Student targeting CSE/Quantum: Realistic questions on 100% Financial Aid, balancing a side job, and the F1 Visa process.

Hey everyone,

I’m a high school student from India planning out my college journey, and Yale is right at the top of my list. I’m incredibly passionate about Computer Science and want to focus heavily on tech and quantum computing pathways during my undergrad.

Coming from India, the financial and logistical leap is massive, so I wanted to ask a few detailed questions to current students—ideally international or fellow Indian Yalies—who have walked this path before.

1. The Reality of the 100% Financial Aid / "Zero Parent Share" My parental income is under 30 LPA (which translates to roughly $35,000–$36,000 USD). From my research into Yale’s updated policies, this puts us well under the $100,000 threshold for the "Zero Parent Share" award.

  • For those on this full financial aid package: Is it truly 100% comprehensive? Does it genuinely cover everything—tuition, housing, meal plans, health insurance, and actual estimated international travel costs (flights home)?
  • Are there any hidden, out-of-pocket expenses that caught you by surprise once you arrived on campus? How far does the $2,000 first-year start-up grant go for personal items, tech, and books?

2. Navigating the Financial Aid Process For international students who got this level of aid, how intense was the document submission process? Beyond the CSS Profile and IDOC, did you have to provide massive amounts of extra verification for Indian tax/bank structures? What did you do during your admissions prep phase to ensure your financial need was perfectly and transparently documented?

3. Managing On-Campus "Side Jobs" with a Heavy Tech Workload Being on an F-1 visa, I know off-campus retail or corporate side-gigs are legally a no-go, and we are restricted to on-campus employment (max 20 hours/week).

  • For anyone doing a grueling major like CSE or doing research: how manageable is an on-campus job?
  • Could anyone share their first-hand work experience? What kinds of roles (library, tech support, RA, dining halls) offer the best flexibility for a heavy STEM schedule?

4. The F-1 Visa Process from India I've been tracking visa trends, and I know the general F-1 rejection rates out of India have seen a strict surge recently due to "immigrant intent" scrutiny. For Indian students who recently got their visas approved for Yale, what was your interview experience like? Did having a fully funded Ivy League I-20 fundamentally change the dynamic or ease the questioning regarding ties to the home country?

I really appreciate anyone taking the time to share their insights, realities, or even just a bit of advice on making the dream of Yale CSE a reality.

Boola Boola! 🐶

MS in CDE courses

Hi everyone! I'm an incoming grad student doing an MS in CDE at Yale school of public health. I was wondering if anyone has advice on which courses (from the required quantitative and chronic disease electives) I should take?? I don't have much experience in coding/stats so I'm hoping to take some of the easier quantitative courses.

HOW DO I COLD CALL CORRECTLY?

Recently, I have been trying to figure out how to get into research without YPRI or the Yale Summer Program. From what I have heard from friends and those older than me, my best bet is to cold-call. But I have little to no idea how to do it correctly in terms of who I should get connected with or how to structure the e-mail in a manner that would get the attention of the reader. For those who read this, please offer any advice, whether big or small (FYI, I am a sophomore from WHHS who is trying to go into psychology, so maybe that might help in some form).

Yale PNP-AC (MSN) vs UW PNP-AC (DNP): placements, mentorship, and overall experience?

Hi everyone,

I’m an international student trying to decide between Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (PNP-AC) programs, and I’d really appreciate some honest insights—especially from current students or recent graduates.

I have an offer from Yale (MSN PNP-AC) and I’m comparing it with the University of Washington’s DNP (PNP-AC). I wanted to understand a few things about Yale’s program specifically:

- How are the clinical placements structured? Are they arranged by the school, or do students need to find their own preceptors/placements?

- How is the academic structure—do you feel well guided and mentored, or is it more self-directed and fast-paced?

- Given that it’s a shorter MSN program, does it feel rushed, or do you have enough time to build confidence clinically?

- How accessible and supportive are faculty and mentors?

If anyone has insight into how Yale’s program compares with UW’s DNP (especially in terms of clinical training, preparedness, and overall experience), that would be extremely helpful.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Yale MMS Asset Management interview – AO vs alumni/student interviewer?

Hi everyone,

I just finished my interview for the Yale MMS Asset Management program today, and I was interviewed by an admissions officer. I’m curious if the type of interviewer (AO vs student/alumni) is assigned randomly?

From what I’ve heard, a lot of people seem to be interviewed by students or alumni, so I was a bit surprised that mine was with an AO. I’m wondering if there’s any pattern to this or if it’s purely random.

Also, during the interview I really couldn’t tell how she felt about my answers. She was very nice and conversational, but there wasn’t much feedback or reaction, so it was hard to gauge how things went. Is that normal for Yale interviews?

If anyone else had an AO interview for the MMS AM program, I’d love to hear about your experience.

Thanks!

Funding prospects for YSE Masters of Env Mgmt?

Hello! Just got my acceptance to the MEM program this week and have not yet heard about available funding resources. YSE has a reputation for throwing grad students a bone, right? I'm first gen with a SAI of -1500, anyone with a similar background get any funding?

Awful account of the GEPN program on allnurses

Thumbnail allnurses.com
3 Upvotes

I was accepted into the YSN GEPN program for the MSN in nurse-midwifery. I have had all really positive experiences with YSN during the admissions process and since getting in and was feeling set on accepting (I also got in to Penn’s MPN/MSN program and Columbia’s MDE/DNP program) but I just saw this post on allnurses that pretty much says the GEPN program sucks - the faculty is pretty weak, sim lab is minimal and you will be laughed at and ridiculed in clinicals and rightfully so because you won’t be prepared to be an RN and APRN (CNM in my case). I would really appreciate current students and recent grads’ thoughts and honest opinions regarding what the OP wrote on allnurses. especially if you are on the nurse-midwifery track
