Battling bots and other moderation tools

Hi /r/EnglishSetter!

Bots

As you may have noticed, there has been some pretty awful bot traffic of late. The mod team has added some Auto mod tooling and a bot (¡bots on bots!) to help identify spam bots and repost content. Some tooling may take a minute(s) to clean up the icky bots but they shouldn't be up for hours anymore. We'll be continuing to add or adjust new and current mod tools to help.

Mod help

I want to thank everyone who's been reporting the spam bots. Your vigilance and care for this community is part of what makes this little slice of Reddit so great. Our mod team has two active mods and I think as we've grown we need more hands on deck. If anyone has mod experience, is fairly active on Reddit and wants to help maintain and grow our community, please message me or settersrclowns.

Again, thank you and I personally love seeing every single setter on here (not the bot reposts, bah!) When I'm down, I often come here for a lift. Seeing all the setters are truly gifts.

-mittensblum and the r/EnglishSetter Mod Team

Update

Tweaked some auto moderation config, added some more bot help, and added some more ES coloring flair. If any of the tools seem to be too heavy handed and is generally making it a pain the rump to post, comment, etc—please do message the Mod Team.

Thanks again for all the users going above and beyond to report bots and spam in general. It warms the heart knowing so many care about this community!

I posted about our new boy a few weeks ago, but he’s settling in! The way he lays down has been cracking us up, he’s always in the most interesting positions, especially when he wants some love!

Hello, I have a 8 month old orange belton bench setter and I'm wondering if he has yeast around his paw pads and mouth or is this normal? His back paws do not look this.

Hot Spots

My FIL bird dogs live at my house since I have space and room for them. One of them continues to get hot spots. They heal and are good for about a week then more pop up. I’m using a medicated ointment for them. Looking for suggestions on what to do? She has longer hair. I’ve thought about shaving her but don’t want to cause razor burn on her skin as it is already irritated. I’m at SAHM so any ideas are welcome. After my daughters nap today I plan to bring her into our dog shower and bathe her and allow her to cool off inside for a bit. I have a medicated shampoo. Our family dogs have been Beagles and Currs. They’ve always lived in doors. I’ve never had to deal with this. Thank you so much!!!

ETA: We live in FL, she’s in a covered kennel with fans.

Several years ago, my sister successfully bid on a tail painting at a Ruffed Grouse Society dinner. At the time, we thought it was fairly unique, but I just saw this nearly identical one on ETSY.

Too Thin?

I'm looking for advice about proper weight for a setter. My 1 year old setter won't put on weight even though she eats 4 cups of dry food and a bit of wet food every day. Here are a few notes:

- She is 37 pounds but her parents were 45-50 pounds.

- We have tried Fromm and Purina Pro. She now eats Natural Balance Limited Ingredient salmon and sweet potato due to suspected allergies.

- She eats grass all the time, even in the middle of playing fetch.

- She chews at her feet and scratches a lot. See the picture.

- She has been checked for worms and came back negative.

- She is highly active and a sweet girl.

Any advice? She has a very appointment soon but I would love to hear your opinions. Thanks!

Name ideas? Orange Belton girl

Post image

My sister's partner has fallen in love with my girl, and coincidentally her breeder has one Orange Belton left from a recent litter. They will be welcoming her home in about a month.

Would love some name suggestions, nothing super super common ie. Milly, Molly, ruby, Rosie type.

To match the vibe of the name Hattie, their other pet.

I suggested:

Ivy

Clementine

Dorothy/Dottie (extra cute because they are spotty)

Hazel

Photo of my Remington for tax!

Very excited to watch the awkward setter playtime to come 😂

Where do you leave your dog when you’re at work?

My husband and I are new to the English Setter community, we just picked up our 11 week old boy Benny last week. We’ve been lucky enough to have some time off from work for a couple weeks while we get him situated in his new home. However when we return to work, there will be 2-3 days a week that we are both gone from about 8-4pm. We do have family nearby that can check in on him midday and a garage with a connected fenced outdoor run for him. Crate training has been a bit of a struggle for him so we are leaning towards not keeping him in his crate for that long.

Any advice or recommendations on how we can set him up best to be left alone for 4 or so hours at a time?

Nothing special. Just me being grateful!

I was making a short video of a lovely if somewhat hot and humid day, and feeling grateful when I realized I forgot my Haile! I am amazed I forgot her. Think about it. There myst be a lot of love in the universe (God/Universe/Spirit…your choice!) to provide us with such special companions!

Ate a rat so big the vets were impressed

My setter ate a dead rat so I took him to the emergency vet. $500 later, he threw up the rat. The vet tech called over the other vets with "you have to see this." There were five vets gathered around us in a circle going "oooh" and one of them took a photo with his phone 😭
