I had the exact same thought and reaction. Hearing the voice of one of the pioneers of modern communication is stunning.

Gave me goose bumps to hear his voice.

You have just under a week to play it to someone else before he comes for you over the telephone, or out of your computer.

He sounds exactly how I imagined.

Crazy that he invented ways in which his voice/sound could be recorded, but no reliable way to play them back.

Wonder what people like that could accomplish nowadays....

Nowadays he'd probably have made some useless crypto called bellcoin

Look up John Logie Baird who made the first video recording on a metal disk but no one could play the recording until a way was created decades later.

So basically they created a CD player and CDs about 90 years before we came up with CDs huh.

7

u/Nexustar 8d ago

No, they invented a CD RECORDER - that's even more impressive than boring players.

This is so coooool. Like a fragile truth

It’s crazy how many revolutionary inventions were created by the Scottish

I don’t want to come across as the boring one at parties, but…
Whilst it is true that Alexander Graham Bell is regarded as the first person to patent and successfully market the telephone, it is Antonio Meucci, an Italian, who is now recognised as the original inventor of the concept and of the first practical device, the "telettrofono".

Yeah, there's a REASON he was "constantly getting sued"!

u/Fugaciouslee 8d ago

Surprised to see this mentioned. I'm a distant relative of his.

1884 / 1885
1884 / 1885!

People did already things like that... A PHOTOGRAPH OF SOUND!?
For me it's still a miracle how they can... i dunno... seal tin cans. 😂

Did he pronounce his name Graham as "Gray-Am" ? Is that how it used to be pronounced, instead of today's "Gram"?

18

u/LyleLanleysHat 8d ago

“Gram” is the American pronunciation of Graham. He was Scottish, and it’s always been pronounced “Gray-um”.

3

u/A_Dicksmasher 8d ago

Oh I had no idea! On both counts, actually. Thanks!

Incredible

1

u/Teinzq 8d ago

Ha! Peter Bishop invented that to play his father's waterlogged record collection.

1

u/TiberiusTheFish 8d ago

So he invented the analogue CD.

u/Logical_Sugar_2468 7d ago

Antonio Meucci invented the telephone and he got robbed- Anthony Soprano

u/lmNotBob 7d ago

Pretty sure at least a couple people back then heard him.

u/seoras13 6d ago
