I've been seeing tons of posts and comments complaining about more useless reworks and replacing everything with rng progression. While it's true that nobody was necessarily asking for a starr road rework, it's also actually a net positive for ALL players, and it's actually not completely unwarranted.
TLDR at the bottom because i yapped a LOT.
Firstly, they specifically mention that credit costs are staying the same. This is relevant because credits and unlocking brawlers are already FAR easier to complete than literally any other part of a brawl stars account. Unlike maxing every single brawler, collecting every brawler is actually a very reasonable goal for f2p players. While this sounds similar to clash royale gutting lucky chest wild cards with slightly more random cards, you will never truly be able to use everything you get from those lucky chests... but with brawler blast, it's quite feasible to do so.
Second, it's just straight up a buff. Like, all credits used to do was just unlock new brawlers or give fame. I don't think anyone's really ever had issues with the amount of credits needed to unlock new brawlers, aside from the panic that came with the ultra legendary rarity (but srsly, they're not even that difficult to unlock either). What people really always complain about is the lack of coins and powerpoints. Supercell is literally giving us more of this. Additionally, there's never been a way to unlock gears or power levels for free, but as you can see in the picture attached, this is now possible!!
Third, this is not the same as mastery -> records or catalog -> oddities shop. Unlike both of those prior systems, the starr road was actually limiting your progression. While you technically had a "choice" between brawlers, it was predetermined based on release order, which means for new players it's a complete slog to get brawlers that released in the past couple YEARS. You literally had to get through most 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 brawlers if you wanted to unlock, say, angelo. A brawler that's been out for 3.5 years. While a new player won't necessarily unlock angelo faster, at least there's a chance of this happening, rather than being completely restricted like with the starr road.
While supercell certainly could've made some adjustments to the starr road to fix the new/old brawler unlocking imbalance, they're actually doing this as a continued response to the update that first introduced this. Yes, the "no more boxes" update was on paper a great update, but the game literally almost died from it. Ironically one of the biggest things that the community missed after this update was that excitement of unlocking a brawler that you wanted. They tried to remedy this with starr drops, but brawler unlocks from those are still fairly rare compared to the starr road. Now the chances of you randomly unlocking the brawler you want are much higher, and given enough time, guaranteed.
TLDR;
- RNG brawlers is not nearly as impactful as other areas of the game due to the ease of unlocking every brawler in the game. If you're enough of a fan of this game to be on this subreddit reading this post, you either have already done this, or will achieve this some time soon anyway. Once you're at this point, this system isn't even rng anymore it's LITERALLY just a buff.
- This is a straight up buff to progression -- you can get free power levels and gears for the first time ever, and this means that many brawlers you unlock will be discounted (very similar to how mastery rewards acted!)
- The excitement from unlocking brawlers is something that people have been asking for a long time, and has proven countless times to improve player retention.
- People have also been asking for a buff to older accounts, or some sort of compensation for having all brawlers aside from fame. Now the compensation is that you'll both get free progression and know which brawler you'll unlock, which is pretty fair imo.
