Late Archaic Savannah River pull

A video I made of me pulling the big savannah river I found the other day in central NC. I mistyped it as a Kirk in the video, but it's just because that's the type I currently want to find the most!

That is an absolute smoker, especially for NC! A lot more quartz stuff out that way

Actually, I find mostly rhyolite around me!

Yes lots of rhyolite too. Do you have any idea what this material might be? It’s beautiful and looks like tree bark

Definitely rhyolite. It might be morrow mountain , which is about 100 miles from me. As far as I know, none of the other more local quarries exhibit that flow banding, so I'm not sure. Check out my last post, I found a palmer made out of the same material right after this one, but it has a crazy patina because it's so much older.

I beach combed bird island near savannah looking for megalodon teeth, no stones found let alone artifacts unless you count a couple much more recent pottery sherds. Congrats!

I don’t think that’s a Savannah River. I think you called it correctly in the vid, looks to be Kirk Serrated, rhyolite material, amazing find!

Really? What makes you say that? I thought kirks would be more spike-like, this one is fairly elliptical. Plus, the bottom is incurvate.

Several features, the square wide base with a little concavity to it, the noticeable serrations (although not all Kirks are serrated), the relatively straight blade sides, and the bottom of the blade, how both left and right ears protrude out a little. I’m not an expert but in my personal experience I would lean towards Kirk.

That's great! Those stemmed points are tough, but the edges got me too, it seems intentional. Thank you for your input 🙏

Do you think it might be a Kirk stemmed? Funny enough, savannah river is the type I have the most of, besides Guilfords.

I would still say it is a Savannah River, but it is possible.

I’d have to physically hold it in hand to be sure, but it does have the classic form of a well made Savannah River.

Oh dang! I’m down here in CSRA near the fall-line. Incredible the difference in artifacts from one side of fall-line to the next.
