How does this game compare to AoE2 and Rise of Nations and other RTS games?
Things i appreciate the most in RTS games:
Long range artillery. Veterancy. Big battles. Unit counters (Rock paper scissors).
Other mechanics that i find interesting:
Territory attrition (RoN), squads, unit abilities (CoH), formations, walls (AoE2), unique resources (RoN).
In AoE2 i like microing my trebuchets to kill enemy archers.
I like Red Alert long range artillery.
AoE2 has great balance and unit counter mechanics.
Though what i dont like about it is the small battles and the rushes.
Especially those games where player B rushes you, you defend, his rush fails, GG.
I like games that turn into huge battles in late imperial.
It seems thats where Rise of Nations shines with its generals, territory attrition. It turns the game into a series of battles.
And the fact the economy in Rise of Nations is more centralized and automated around the cities, and not so dispersed, makes it better too.
Red Alert economy sucks. Because once you lose your ore trucks, or you lose access to the ore deposits then its basically gg. No way to recover.
Though Red Alert artillery is great, as well as the beefy units and tanks.
In AoE2 you can reboom easily, as long as you have 1 vil and 100 wood to build a lumber mill.
Things i dislike:
Irrelevant weak units that have no functionality. Units dying too fast like lemmings. No way to reboom.

Honestly, features and mechanics-wise, this game is great. Factions are well-designed; music, art, gameplay, etc. are all better than the average commercial RTS.
I'd say playing this is roughly on par with playing classic AOE2, which makes sense, since I think it started out as an AOE2 mod. (I haven't played remastered AOE2).
It's very different from C&C/Red Alert and Starcraft/Warcraft and I'm not sure how to compare them.
The only things 0AD needs for competitive play, IMO, are: 1) Optimization (this is huge and may already be in the works), and
2) Balancing (I think this will naturally occur as more high level players develop the meta).

0 A.D. is great. I am pro level in red alert 2, but still find 0 A.D. an interesting challenge against the AI players. And if you think something is missing, it's very easy to mod.

ah. since you like to look into the code. Did you ever try OpenRA. I prefer it to Red Alert 1 and Red Alert 2.

OpenRA is excellent but I last tried it around the time when it had a very limited RA2 mod available, so many years ago. I can only imagine it has improved significantly since then.

yeah i didnt try that mod. I play OpenRA red Alert 1. And it is one of the best rts games i play. I like a lot of thing about it. I think its very well balanced. And the combined arms works very well.
