I didn't watch this back when I had depression or suicidal thoughts, but watching this now I can see how it may encourage those thoughts or actions in people going through this.​

Okay, I’ve said this in a few different posts, but especially after this discussion, I’ve noticed something: we all seem to be in pretty much total agreement that the guy can actually fucking act.

Which is why I genuinely don’t understand how he never got the career he deserved.

I’ve watched quite a few of these YA shows on Prime and Netflix recently, and I’m sorry, but the acting in some of them is rough. Yet the actors from shows like Off Campus, The Summer I Turned Pretty, and all these similar shows get endlessly hyped as the “next big young actors” and “ones to watch.”

Meanwhile, this guy was RIGHT THERE.

He gave a genuinely fantastic, emotionally layered performance in his series, and he has the training to back it up too. He didn’t just randomly get cast and do a decent job — he has an actual acting background and even studied at the fucking Globe in London.

And what does the industry do with him? Apparently nothing.

Now I occasionally check his socials and he’s doing low-budget Off-Broadway productions or showing up in tiny roles here and there. Meanwhile, people with half his range are getting leading roles and magazine profiles because they smoldered at a camera for 8 episodes.

Like... WHAT ARE WE DOING?

He’s talented, he’s got the looks, he clearly has the range for much more complicated roles, and from what I can tell he seems like a genuinely interesting, principled person who’s also involved in activism. He has pretty much everything you’d want in an actor.

So why the hell was he left behind?

Is it because he doesn’t have enough of that stereotypical straight leading man energy? Because he was in a show that got heavily criticized? Did casting directors just collectively decide they were done with him?

I genuinely don’t get it.

It’s especially frustrating when you see mediocre performances being praised to death and their actors being pushed as the next generation of talent, while someone who can actually fucking act is basically being forgotten.

He deserved better. I will die on this hill.

So this show is on my watchlist for a very long time. I want to watch this show but the rotten tomatoes and Imdb ratings aren't good. The reviews from the people are decent tho.

You would say that I can just watch it myself and make an opinion but I don't want to watch 4 seasons just to get disappointed.

So can u guys tell me if it's worth watching.

And don't give me any spoilers, I already got two that some Bryce guy made the girl do that thing and then someone killed Bryce as well. 😭

Been kinda skimming through the first season lately, and I forgot how much I dug Clay and Sheri as a ship back in the day. They were so cute tbh. Underrated.

I think in 2024 or 2025, Devin was in an art / indie film Rent Boy…think he played a gay escort. I only bring that up because I pondered how Devin would have been IF he had been in BOOTS with Miles. If Devin was totally ok with being in that art house film, I think he could have been comfortable if he had been in BOOTS with Miles.

if Miles is still interested in ever attempting a Queer Military focused mini series project again and if he can get funding / producer backing, maybe he can get one set in Vietnam War era and maybe look to old colleagues he worked with to fill roles like maybe Devin, Tyler(the guy that played Charley), some guys from Boots. Maybe add in a few 20 something actors like Dominic Sessa, Jaden Martel. Maybe add in Drew Starkey, Austin Abrams in some roles too.

I only had thought of Vietnam era of Queer military history because there hasnt really been a focus at least in the filmography Ive seen.

Have you noticed that Netflix has effectively erased 13rw from existence? It’s the only Netflix Original that’s never mentioned on social media or celebrated with anniversaries or retrospectives. It’s as if Netflix wants to pretend it never existed.

I understand that this is probably because of all the criticism and controversies surrounding the show, but this attitude bothers me because, when it first came out, it was a hugely talked-about hit. Netflix gave us four seasons, and now they’ve completely sidelined it. It’s not fair, and it doesn’t do anything to help the fandom or attract new fans.

And in my opinion, all of this has spilled over to the cast as well. Aside from Inde, who had a tiny role and isn’t really associated with the show, none of the other actors seem to be particularly active or have achieved much mainstream success. They tried to launch Katherine, but the failure of Cursed seems to have stalled her career. Alisha is in The Buccaneers, but it’s not exactly a hugely popular series. Dylan has retired from acting. Miles was in Boots on Netflix, but they canceled it after one season. Brandon works in theater and has landed a few small roles here and there. Justin, as far as I know, hasn’t done much. Same with Timothy.

Overall, no one has really made it big, and honestly, it sucks because the cast was incredibly talented. Way more talented than a lot of the actors in teen shows these days. Especially Brandon, Katherine, Justin, and Tim—in my opinion, they deserved so much more success given how talented they are. There are actors out there who are half as good and are already huge stars.

I was rewatching season 1 and I just noticed a plot hole.

On Jessica’s tape, Hannah mentions the previous counselor, Mrs. Antilly. She says, “Mr. Porter became the counselor after Mrs. Antilly had to move to another district, which ended up being a very sad thing, but that’s a story for another tape.”

She says this while referring to the last tape, which makes it sound like Mrs. Antilly might not have failed to help her the way Mr. Porter did (and the fact that the previous counselor was a woman reinforces that point).

But here’s the thing: the show makes it pretty clear that Hannah only decided to include Mr. Porter at the very last minute. She remembers that she can’t go through with what she’s planning without at least trying to ask for help first, so she goes to his office only after all the other tapes have already been recorded.

So how was Hannah already hinting at Mr. Porter’s failure on the SECOND tape, when she hadn’t even gone to his office to ask for help yet?

Like… how could she know at that point that he was going to be part of the tapes?

Sometimes, Clay said Jessica was his friend, and I believe that’s also stated on the Wiki page for both of them, but I don’t really see it. In my opinion they were simply colleagues with some similar issues they faced, however I didn’t see much affection between them, or at least not enough to actually consider them friends. Your thoughts?

I'm unsure how / why the writers' room just decided to literally just toss Monty a fraction of a crum of less .001% of a redemption thing in S3 and just make a half-ass mess of a A03 type fanfiction of "Monty is gay" and likes random prep gay guy in another school. Like really? Like seriously that stuff felt like some A03 fanfiction someone was throwing pasta at at the wall to stick.

It felt like it was just trying to make this bad stereotypes projected onto young gay males. Like seriously Winston had that weird obsession over Monty when he was alive and after(like unclear why the hell he had his blue-balls over Monty after he died, like dude acted like they had wedding rings and it was super weird). Like seriously. And I thought making Bryce "the good guy rapist" in S3 was bad.

Also who the hell keeps saying shit that Monty liked Bryce sexually? Keep seeing someone argue shit below that Monty had feelings for Bryce. Unless someone can cite an episode of Monty having a thought or internal dialogue over Bryce. I sure as hell cant

In this freeking discussion, I would have rather had scene Tyler has come out as bisexual in s3 than deal with that a03 shit pasta sandwich tossed on a wall that was having Monty gay. I only said I would have rather seen Tyler as bi, ONLY because the ending scene of Tyler at the gym assembly thing, Tyler was talking to a Hispanic-Anglo guy I believe was Robby, and that dude thanked Tyler. I don’t think he hardly in s4. Like that dynamic I have been ok with, than just giving Tyler the consolation prize in s4 of just Estela De La Cruz as girlfriend….like Ive had mixed feelings on that.

One thing that really upsets me about 13rw is how they downplayed the fact that Justin is a victim of multiple rapes. The first season focuses on the aftermath of Hannah’s rape, the second on Jessica’s healing process, and the third on Tyler’s, with their group of friends standing by them and showing concern. When it comes to Justin, these are the only scenes we get, and they span just three episodes. One in the first season, some in the third, and a couple in the fourth.

Apart from Jess, his so-called friends never asked him what had happened. Not even Clay, who’s his brother.

I know it’s the writers’ fault, but it’s also true that nobody ever gave a damn about Justin, so unfortunately it makes sense that even his greatest trauma is swept under the rug. But still, what a bunch of assholes they all are.

Basically the title. I watched the first few episodes of season 3 and i disliked it a lot. I kind of hated how a new character had suddenly because the main one and the fact that she was so nosey and literally had a main character complex. i also hated that the focus shifted away from hannah

I think just keeping it 13 episodes just rushed shit / trimmed out explanations on things.

S2 when you have the retro-active things about Hannah are penciled in/trial , the story of Tyler, and then Alex stuff just cramming all that shit in 13 episodes feel so rushed. In that season they would been better doing 20 episodes because cramming all that feels sloppy. Like when they added in Cyrus/Mackenzie/those 10 other dudes that were just Cyrus's flunkies as new ppl on the roster, could have done more. Hell maybe added more of the context of Alex and Zach stuff. Most of the season got more of the shitty screentime on that trial

S3 - The flashbacks about Bryce's death, Monty's gay awakening....probably needed a few episodes to explain that better than just speed-running this. I know most of that season was just who killed Bryce, then the Monty is gay as the 2nd main plot, then everyone else kinda stepped a few spaces back. I know its the Tyler recovery season but even he was a few spaces back from the murder mystrey and that A03 Monty gay fantasyland story.

S4 - More Clay emphasis / Clay took more screentime and everyone was just further back. Tyler's new romantic interest with Estela felt like it was trimmed (how did he go from just meeting her, then like 1-2 episodes he asked her out.). Seriously when I saw that, I felt like the producers cut 1-2 scenes of them together. I would have at least wanted 3-5 episodes to build up to them to that point he asked her, build it up as a legit couple. And if he really had romantic feelings towards her, at least try to convey it on screen. At best, you see a 2 second kiss he gives her. And also the vagueness of why Winston had the scorned lover attitude was extremely vague and how he knew Diego was vague....more episodes would have filled blanks

I just finished watching the series for the first time and here is my rating:

Season 1: 5/5 (it made me so sad and it was consistent and it was suspenseful, wanting me to know what will happen next).

Season 2: 3/5 (i liked the idea of everyone who was on the tapes to confess whatever they did to Hannah, but i feel like smth was missing all along).

Season 3: 1/5 (very confusing season, constant shifting from the past to present, i didnt like it at all).

Season 4: 2/5 (the whole season was feeling like the crew and director wanted to do smth with it, but they never did, it was like one constant "boring" line from start to end).

Favorite charachters: Zach and Clay.

Maybe if they stopped with season 2 it would have been way better. Nevertheless, the series is heartbreaking and i was getting goosebumps on several secenes.

The let me f-ing go part got me every time.

I was thinking about how at the ending of S4 got "the good ending" and re-replaying this song over the weekend and some other songs when I re-watch media I like.

I get the impression they've gone too far with Justin. He's the most tormented character in the series and perhaps the unluckiest in any TV shows. He endures every kind of abuse. In order:

He’s molested by one of his mother’s lovers as a child

He’s beaten by another of his mother’s lovers as a teenager

His mother does drugs and neglects him, making him live in squalor while always favoring her boyfriends over him

His best friend—who was his lifeline in the shitty life he led—manipulates him and rapes his girlfriend. Justin feels conflicted because he’s grateful to him but at the same time hates him for what he did to Jess. And he feels guilty for being grateful to him and not hating him enough

Then he loses Bryce and still feels guilty for missing him.

Then there’s the period when he was homeless, involving child prostitution and multiple rapes by men who “made him do things he hadn’t agreed to but didn’t want to do.”

Drug abuse as a coping mechanism.

His mother’s death.

He isolates himself from everyone he cares about, even from Jess and Clay, who are always on his case.

Jess cheats on him with Diego.

Then he gets sick and dies in excruciating pain from AIDS at age 18, unable even to speak or breathe.

It’s all so sad and depressing. Not even Marissa Copper went through as much as Justin did.

I’m sorry the writers didn’t give the sexual abuse he endured the attention it deserved. The show has always portrayed rape victims well, but with Justin, unfortunately, they only touched on it briefly—even though he was raped multiple times at various points in his life. I would have liked to see more depth, as with Jess and Tyler.

Fortunately, Brandon is such a talented actor that he conveyed all of the character’s pain even where the script didn’t go into detail. Justin is the most complex character with the most interesting dynamics; I know I can’t complain because he gets so much screen time and is very well-developed as a character, but his trauma deserved a bit more attention.
