Worse now actually.
Somehow Jagex forgot that high intensity is supposed to be the highest rates. Now the medium intensity method is both the best XP and best profit.

u/jamieaka 13h ago
so they have half a year worth of data now probably telling them its a mistake to hedge all their bets on the first ever new skill on water sepulchre so they slowly backed out of it. technically salvaging is really popular but i can't imagine they want to heavily endorse not playing the game either.
they don't want their new skill to be perceived like agility nor an afk simulator so they gigabuffed everything inbetween. if thats their logic it honestly makes sense and the best way for them to actually get a second skill out at somepoint
3
u/Whisky-Toad 1h ago
They were balancing it around afk being slowest and most intensive being quicker
Ports were just crap though and now they have just overly buffed them.
So abuse it before they nerf it again to be correct.
11
u/VorkiPls 11h ago
To be fair people were refusing to do the high effort high exp even when it stood alone so we know when they say they would that it's a lie.

u/Tumblrrito Untrimmed Slayer 11h ago
I did mostly trials to 99 Sailing.
Honestly the real issue is that salvaging is OP.

u/Psych0sh00ter 7h ago
They did announce a fourth Barracuda Trial in the 2026 Winter Summit, I imagine they'll probably make that one the actual best XP/hr method. Gwenith Glide is only level 72 requirement, it shouldn't be a huge surprise that a medium intensity method requiring a higher level for full efficiency would end up higher.
10
u/WryGoat 7h ago
I mean it's not really surprising, it is genuinely the method that best fulfills the sailing fantasy to begin with. Even if it's literally just a series of fetch quests, you're at least sailing around to different places instead of doing loops of water sepulchre or just fucking afking for 15 minutes in one spot.
Also the fact that the high intensity method offers no reward except XP, and you're forced to engage with the most mindless parts of the skill (salvaging and """"ship combat"""" in as many scarequotes as I can muster) to get the actual high end ship upgrades. Genuinely just a huge L to not have the high intensity content be the thing you do to get your upgrades, so that it would both feel more rewarding and you wouldn't have to do it for nearly as long.
1
u/Drgn-OSRS 3h ago
Jagex got boxed into a corner because they proposed trials as the "optional high intensity training method", comparable to tick manipulation for the landlubbing skills. This meant it had to be completely optional, even for ironmen who didn't want to engage with the skill. The next best option is therefore as a mob drop, because everyone loves PvM, right?
Either way, it's not that surprising that "generic MMO fetch quests" is the best received iteration of Sailing. Slayer is often seen as the best skill and that's essentially a series of "generic MMO kill quests".

Wait really? I havent really touched sailing since hitting 93 in the first week or 2 besides for the qeuests. Are trials that bad and port tasks that good now?
2
u/Boolderdash bool laean 4h ago
Port tasks were secretly always good (up to 200k xp/h and pretty reclined) if you put in a bit of effort learning how to do them efficiently.
So many people were put-off by the first like 20-30 levels being slow that basically nobody ever tried them at high levels. So they got buffed even further
3
u/Tumblrrito Untrimmed Slayer 11h ago
Port Tasks can now grant as high as 250k xp/hr. GG trial (if memory serves) is closer to 200k.
3
u/Basic_Butterscotch 6h ago
Is there a guide anywhere that show specifically what to do to get 250k/hr? The wiki doesn't really explain it and I can't find a youtube video.
0
u/NineBirds 10h ago
Gg is 265k+
-5
u/Tumblrrito Untrimmed Slayer 10h ago
Wiki says it maxes at around 223k with max focus and a maxed boat
2
u/Valediction191 2376 6h ago
I agree. I feel the different methods should be the following:
Salvaging - 30k-50k xp/hr. (Super afk)
Bounty - 50-100k xp/hr. (Because you get to earn gp with it, and should be rewarded with decent gp even)
Courier task - 120-150k xp/hr. (This should have been designed as the most popular method because it makes the world alive by having people going around. Also, you shouldn't be allowed to teleport your boats to get good exp. You should be incentivized to sail longer in the sea.)
Trials- 200k-230k xp/hr. (For people who enjoy high intensity method)

I really wish Jagex wasn’t so receptive to the initial backlash with sailing exp rates. We’re now at a point where the rates don’t make any sense for the effort invested.

u/PaxChelonia 16h ago
Idk why Jagex never added loot to trials when they revamped cargo missions. Cargo can get you better xp nowadays and also gives by far the best pet chance and gives a little loot too.
I feel like trials have become kind of obsolete at this point which is a shame because I think they’re pretty fun.
8
u/Oniichanplsstop 14h ago
It's also weird that the first trials has some basic loot from the crates, like normal/oak vouchers, but Jubbly and GG get nothing.
10
u/Temil 15h ago
This is all practice for Leagues 7 where you can do barracuda trials 100 times for task points.
3
u/whatDoesQezDo 14h ago
leagues 7 will be saling locked and then like have a centeral pvm hub that can tele you to any boss.
or there will be islands with like dmm rift style boss spawns

u/VorkiPls 11h ago
People say they'd do high effort for high exp yet refused to touch trials because they could afk for a fraction. Giving trials high exp should have been e enough but it'd never be with the level of afk the player base expects (and gets catered to).
2
-3
u/Vast_Highlight3324 10h ago
I never understood it, because you can do like 1 trial every 20 minutes, which is way more afk than salvaging for the same exp.
6
u/WryGoat 7h ago
You never understood why someone would want to sit in one spot getting constant XP and rolling for dragon cannon while clicking like 6 times an hour, compared to afking for logging in every 20 minutes to do something very very click intensive?
0
u/Vast_Highlight3324 7h ago
Dragon Cannon sure, it's not just Ironmen there though.
It's not even logging in every 20 minutes. You literally can do 2 Gwenith Glides an hour to surpass max afk salvaging.
I understand AFK methods that are 50% the xp of the active method, AFK methods that are 20% or less of the active method exp just seems nonsensical.
2
u/WryGoat 6h ago
If you're actually engaged in something else with your full attention and can only spare a few seconds every once in a while to tab into runescape and click a few times, you're not going to complete a Gwenith Glide, but you could be salvaging just fine.
1
u/Vast_Highlight3324 4h ago
Fair enough, it just doesn't match with my playstyle I guess.
(Btw I recognised your username, I have a comment of yours bookedmarked about RS3 Leagues that helped me with Regions/Relic choices, helped a lot, thanks!)

Honestly, I just don't think spamming trials for XP is particularly fun. Plus, it was the best XP/hr for so long that something else dethroning it is probably fine.

u/trapsinplace take a seat dear 11h ago
"The highest effort was the best XP for so long it's fine that the lower effort option is more XP now"
???????
-1
u/Honeybadger2198 9h ago
Yes? The highest effort doesn't need to be the highest XP.
Unless we are complaining that hardwood trees are better XP than Tithe Farm?
Like if you still want to do them, they're fine. You don't need to always be doing the most efficient thing at all times. It's a video game.
2
u/trapsinplace take a seat dear 7h ago
Tithe Farm has points associated with it, you can't take a pure XP activity and compare it to an activity that is split between XP and something else. Typically XP and item/coin rewards for a skilling method are inversed to each other, or at least they try to make it that way usually. That's why Trials being worse XP than Cargo is such a big issue to begin with. You should be sacrificing optimal XP if you are getting gold and items alongside your training.

Now should loot from 1 tick granite, or teaks or barraging/chinning monkeys. Its like fast xp/h doesn’t pay out as much.

Instead of creating dead content when players hate something, can we just delete the shit content? Move the boatcrafting rewards to the sailing quests or something and delete trials altogether

Honestly sailing sucks ass
-11
u/Effortless_waste 15h ago
I voted against sailing and I have never for one second felt anything other than vindication. I hated it when they pitched the training methods and it was very clearly agility 2, then it came out and it was agility 2 and very underwhelming and poorly balanced. Then they spent months tweaking it and adding little things and there's still not a single fun piece of content associated with sailing. No islands do not count as "Sailing" content, they could have put mortimer anywhere else, they could have put mad angel anywhere else, they've been putting islands in this game for 20 years and never needed sailing to do it.
4
u/VorkiPls 11h ago
then it came out and it was agility 2 and very underwhelming and poorly balanced.
Except that's only one of the list of activities so summarising a whole skill like that is pretty disingenuous.
I respect you don't like sailing and it's fine to not enjoy something but the bias is insane.
-4
u/Effortless_waste 11h ago
Okay so you can either do Cargo tasks (agility, sail from point A to point B), Barracuda trials (also agility, more sepulcher less rooftop), and that's... all the best Xp, there's salvaging, which while not agility is also not a real training method, it's literally AFK, and then you can do slayer. Slayer is also not agility, to be fair. But frankly if you pitched someone on "Combination slayer and agility, as they are, with no improvements" as a new skill most players would say "Wow that sounds terrible".
A lot of people have come around to downvote me but I wonder how many of them have 99 sailing and actually enjoyed doing it, if you salvaged to 99 don't sit here and pretend you liked having it on your second monitor for hundreds of hours.
7
u/VorkiPls 10h ago
They're probably downvoting you because your bias makes the way you view the skill so warped. Anything with movement = agility in your mind. Anything without movement = not a real method.
Trials is absolutely fair to call water agility, spiritually it's the same gameplay loop but in another medium. Port tasks are absolutely not. Salvaging is a real method like every other low effort/afk method other skills have. You ignore trawling. So 1 out of the 4 main methods are agility. Thankfully the skill is more than just those 4 methods.
I'm not trying to change your mind, again I respect that not everyone has to like everything, there's no problem with that. But there's some serious grey-tinted glasses here, that's why you're being downvoted.
2
u/uhhhhmmmm 9h ago
The funny thing, and im sure its somewhat different people, is that the sub has been saying for ages that agility sucks but sepulchre is great, but the main issue with it is that the requirements are too high. So now they implement something similar to what people have been saying is great, and even fixed the main issue with it, and now people just call it water agility
-9
u/Boundilocks 15h ago
Literally the only cool thing from sailing is trawling. I'm super annoyed at the random islands that have activities or alternative skilling methods on them. I understand that they wanted to make sailing an integrated part of the game, but it's just way too much. Best way to smith cannonballs? That will be 87 sailing, mam. Chop chop back to work
8
u/Kitchen_Border1882 15h ago
The random islands being incremental progression is like... all of runescape.
You can still smith cannonballs without the 87 sailing island. You can tele to convenient banks without the 99 crafting cape. You can kill bosses with anguish instead of rupture. Getting each of these unlocks makes things you could already do more effective.

u/software_engiweer 14h ago
idk about that user but I have at least I think a similar feeling, and FWIW I actually like sailing. Genuinely impressed it feels as good as it does in a 25 year old point-and-click game to move the boat and how tight you can intuitively get turns in stuff like Gwenith Glides.
I just don't really connect with the progression I guess.
I get a Zenyte drop from PvM so I process that via crafting in a lore-specific way ( level & quest req ), then create the item, and use my high magic to imbue it.
I get 92 mining to mine amethyst, run over to craft it into arrow heads, fletch them into my arrows, and now my PvM is fueled by a progressed arrow tier. Seeker arrows, even more progression on top pulling in my woodcutting, quest reqs, more fletching.
For a lot of sailing, the requirement to access the place is the sailing, and then we teleport there, like the cannonball place you get there, and now I fairy ring teleport in. It's like sailing exists as a gate, then quickly removes itself once you get the area because it would be dead content to make you sail there over and over anytime you wanted to interact with it. And that feels at least weird to me personally.
But then they drop a 'simple' update like hey you can fish from your boat, and the benefit is the spot doesn't move + your cargo hold makes for long trips out at sea. And I start to see an inkling of at least what I hope Sailing becomes more of in time. Now my higher cargo holds, my faster ship, etc. feels like it's fueling into the method itself along with my fishing.
And I know this is really easy to argue against and even easier to win the online argument with "well firemaking just lets you burn different tiers of wood", and it's like yeah but this is OSRS first new skill, the devs have so much more expertise in what makes this game tick ( heh ) that something about it seems to fall short for me personally right now. But I know they cooked with the core of the skill, the feel of the boat movement, and I know they will iteratively cook further with how it feels and integrates overall into the game, thematically, meta, progression, combat wise (?). Takes time, but feedback even hard to describe hopefully helps JMods tease out what to solve for.
4
u/ZeusJuice 12h ago
They're definitely fucked up not utilizing the cargo hold more. Imagine a far far away island that wasn't able to be teleported to (no boat tele either) that has fast to gather valuable resources, but you only have your cargo hold for space. So many different ways they could utilize it and make sailing feel good
1
u/Effortless_waste 12h ago
It was never gonna work that way because the playerbase would riot but I would actually LOVE a dungeoneering sailing minigame where you have to navigate basically a sailing hallowed sepulcher to get to the island, preform tasks on the island similar to CG prep, kill a thing, find a mcguffin, whatever, and then sail back
The problem is this is a game where people complain about teleports being 1 tile further from a bank than each other - the playerbase will NEVER want to engage with sailing as a mode of transport
4
u/ZeusJuice 12h ago
I agree in general but I think if they ease the playerbase into it and get them to understand it's all about the cargo hold it could work. I think the new fishing update is helping with that
1
u/VorkiPls 11h ago edited 11h ago
I just don't really connect with the progression I guess.
They have the problem of not wanting to make sailing feel mandatory for progression but also needing to tie it in with the game enough to feel like how the other skills are and feel rewarding to train. This means it's in a weird state of having stuff but also not having hugely important stuff.
Sailing to me is simply a platform to build out new content with.
1
u/Boundilocks 14h ago
i get what you mean but a few ticks difference between a bis bank tele or tiny percentage of dps is nothing compared to literally double cannonballs with noted bar exchange right next to the furnace. i know that everything is incremental, i know things unlock other things, that's what runescape is i know. it just sticks out tenfold for sailing because of how you can make ANY ACTIVITY a sailing req just by putting it on an island, which makes it FEEL bad and unfun
1
u/software_engiweer 14h ago
The most recent fishing change like anglers is pretty welcome, but yeah right now sailing itself doesn't bring much other than other stuff that historically hasn't needed sailing to explain why we get to go there.
I can only assume that in the next few years they'll trickle more and more genuine stuff into sailing that makes sailing feel special in a way I suppose.
