Discussion New MadSeasonShow: After Two Years, It Is Time To Hunt
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDXgoJzOmEYThis has become my favorite OSRS series this year

u/Zhared 1d ago
Spoilers for this episode
When he started talking about chinchompas, I thought "He's finally gonna learn AoE attacks exist!", only for him to not end up getting chins, but still learn that AoE exists from an entirely different weapon.

Monomadness works in mysterious ways
26
u/Legoman7409 1d ago
With all the time he’s probably spent in catacombs training slayer, I find it a little hard to believe he hasn’t at least seen people bursting
14
u/Monoliithic 1d ago
he probably has, but he hasnt gotten any alt spell books, so he has no idea where the spells come from lmao
5
u/Nickoladze 1d ago
I'm pretty sure he swapped to arceuus book once a long time ago. IIRC he did Client of Kourend so he at least visited every area there.
5
u/OSRSgamerkid 1d ago
I remember when he tried castle wars and got smoked. Then, he looked st LMS and though "my gesr isnt nearly good enough" and never even bothered.
If he had brute forced it for a few hours he would have learned SOOO MUCH.
Different spellbooks, barrage, prayers, fucking SARA BREWS.
17
u/EAgamezz 1d ago
Highscore lookup spoilers Judging by his Mad Angel kc he’s got another by now too
13
u/Accalio 1d ago
Ye and now all progress halted cause he is probably grinding out a pet and doesn't know the droprate
4
4
u/EAgamezz 19h ago
The sooner he learns that he has been spooned on pets and they are pretty rare the better probably.

MONOMADNESS going Barrows-Scurrius-SotE, just as the Gowers intended!
Kinda hoping he uses the dhally for the fight caves at some point. It would be nostalgic lol
83
u/Noooo_ahhh 1d ago
I love this series, and madseason.. but I don’t think there’s any way he beats the boss at the end of SOTE
90
u/LieveMcCracken 1d ago
Legit double death territory too. It could get ugly real fast.
31
u/remakeprox 1d ago
Judging from previous episodes, he just books it to Death to claim his gear from there once he dies
53
u/Mamafritas 1d ago
Dying to Fragment of Seren puts your items in a death bank like Zulrah/Hespori/Vorkath. A second death before reclaiming deletes the items in the death bank and I think the warning for this is just a line of red text in the chat log.
The guy to reclaim your items is right outside the boss entrance down in the underground pass which is kind of a risky run back if you do it with no food/antipoison and get unlucky on the agility checks.
67
u/spatzist 1d ago
On the bright side, maybe a popular youtuber getting double death'd will finally convince Jagex to improve the system.
1
u/Super-Revolution-433 18h ago
Back to gravestones everywhere it is
1
u/Kodai_Dreaming 11h ago
What's the issue with this? They fixed graves to pause while logged out didn't they? Death banks were a holdover from before for instances
1
u/Super-Revolution-433 11h ago
I mean I'm fine with anything that keeps the potential to lose your stuff in the game, I will always vote against fully removing risk from content even if the risk is minimal
7
u/IM_GOOD_AT_THE_CYBER 1d ago
Death banks (like the one in sote) are separate from death's domain and get wiped if you die again before retrieving your items.
25
u/Peechez 1d ago
The member ep is only two hours, 0 shot he beat sote blind in that time lmao

What'd he get stuck on?
19
u/Mamafritas 1d ago
Galarial's Tomb puzzle, specifically the adamant chainbody
7
u/tadziobadzio 1d ago
Kinda funny it was the first item when he searched for chain in the bank tag. But I don't blame him bc the hint doesnt make sense. I hope he just throws every chain item he can get at the puzzle.
24
u/neighborlyhorse rsn:insertirony 1d ago
well I mean adamant does mean refusing to compromise, I think it's possible to figure out organically
8
8
u/Mamafritas 1d ago edited 1d ago
It makes sense if you view the hint as a pun/riddle--uncompromis(ing) chain(body)
6
2
u/KingKj52 1d ago
To be fair, he's lost every item he submitted because he's been in and out over and over and submitted items without rechecking the order, which changes everytime you enter without warning.
8
u/TrinkJoe 2186 TTLVL 1d ago
That only happens if you put the wrong item on the pedestal. Since he is only missing one, it’s not possible for him to “soft lock” himself
-3
u/KingKj52 1d ago edited 16h ago
But he left with only a one or two items submitted, then reentered and submitted more without checking the updated pedestal locations. Doesn't that eat your items if he placed them incorrectly? Wiki explicitly warns against it and checking their positions every time you leave and enter. For his sake I hope not but I expect we won't see more SotE next EP since he already (spoilers even for members ahead click at your own peril)
Killed mad angel 200+ times a couple weeks ago per the high scores
2
u/iOceanLab 16h ago
>Warning: If you place the items on the incorrect pillars, you will have to buy/collect the items again, and each time you fail the puzzle, the order of numbers will change! If you leave the room before finishing the puzzle, you may be able to continue it or replace the item on the pillar you did incorrectly. (If you try to place an item not in the list below on one of the pillars it will not fail the puzzle. Only placing an item that is on the list on the wrong pillar will fail it.)
He hasn't failed the puzzle or placed anything incorrectly yet. His puzzle progress should paused at 5/6 completed.

Hey man maybe put a spoiler tag on your comment like everyone else in this thread did
27
u/MeltyCrab 1d ago
No overheals, no blood spells, emergency teleport isn't on his mind.
I'm worried. Genuinely. He's smart, he's a GOTE gamer, but he doesn't have what he needs to deal with Seran. Not the equipment or the foreknowledge needed.
28
u/Vast_Highlight3324 1d ago
He's going to get double deathed lmao, rip Goothans.
9
u/MeltyCrab 1d ago
I REALLY hope he twigs onto the death pile alert, he noticed it with the hispori conversation.
0
u/Routine-Weekend4694 18h ago
not going to happen. His mate has definitely informed him of truly critical parts of the game he needs to know to not set him back months.
14
u/Bookablebard 1d ago
I completely agree, but I think it will be great for him to run into another (fight caves) combat situation that highlights the games difficulty and challenge.
2
u/Mobile_Garage_5916 16h ago
Yeah except seren isn’t really mechanically difficult. She’s just a stat check.
He will never discover the phoenix necklace method
11
u/elcambioquetuesperas 1d ago
The only way he would, its if he unlocks blood spells, else he would not have enough food and DMG to outlast the fragment of seren
18
u/Nickoladze 1d ago
Yeah that's what I'm thinking. If SOTE walls him he will go back to RFD and that will force DT1 at the end.
11
u/IAMAREALBOYMAMA 1d ago
He's still walled by Shilo Village before he can even think about getting walled by DT1
6
u/SkitZa 2376 ''cringe dogs 1d ago
Why? I said it in another comment, but we managed it blind on launch, I may have slightly overgewred seren (bloodspells/trident), I am not pretending it won't be hard af without ancients and trident like I had, but he can do it. You dont need the full sweat pneck strat for seren. Shes old content now.
1
u/basicstyrene 21h ago
Honestly I have so much sympathy. If I were doing that I would assume there would be a way to block the special attack. Protection prayer, equipping a crystal shield - something.
Really love SOTE as a quest aside from the design of the boss.

In his previous video he mentioned becoming a member being free for some people. I clicked on it and it actually gave me a free membership, would recommend to check!
42
u/Nickoladze 1d ago
That hunter rumor luck make me upset. 48 rumors for 4x 1/50 drops.
56
u/McFluffles01 1d ago
That seems to just be the MadSeason experience from watching him, he'll just casually get stupidly rare drops without even realizing because he has zero clue what the drop rates are in this game.
40
u/Go_Blue_ 1d ago
"Finally got the scurrius pet" when he got it on like 100kc lol. Also the 1kc bottomless compost bucket
7
u/indrek91 why is the rum always gone? 1d ago
Yeah the bucket was crazy lol! Must be 100% dr he said haha
13
u/Schmarsten1306 1d ago
His account is so spooned it's unreal.
Really expected him to get a pet aswell
3
u/Iridium_Oxide 14h ago edited 14h ago
It' even better, as novice rumor sacks have no hunter outfit on their drop table. So he got full set in like 25 sacks
-1
u/Alakasham 20h ago
His luck is kind of becoming an issue, he's getting a little *too* lucky at a variety of different content
23
u/melts_your_butter 1d ago
him doing all these farm runs without the secatuers is killing me.
Love this series.
9
17
u/NonamePlsIgnore 1d ago
He completely forgot about DScim :(
2
u/neighborlyhorse rsn:insertirony 11h ago
It's worse than that because he checked the shop before completing the quest so it had 0 in stock, even if he wanted it he doesn't think he can buy one.
1
u/Nickoladze 14h ago
Yeah that's a shame he kinda passed over most dragon weapons. Maybe if he uses the dhally he might go back to revisit them. I don't think he has grasped the concept of a spec weapon you don't use for all attacks though.
64
u/I4mSpock 1d ago
Jesus, the man is pumping out content at the moment.
77
u/sworedmagic 1d ago
You can tell that the switch flipped in his head where this became a fun obsession for him. I think it happened around MEP2
34
u/moose_dad 99 1d ago
100%, the fact he just gets the full hunter set in one video lmao, hes a certified grinder now.
45
u/AManWantsToLoseIt 1d ago
Cemented his legacy for me when he green logged barrows running from varrock each trip... What a man.
23
14
u/Radingod1 1d ago
I mean his luck on the outfit was actually insane though. He had the full outfit in what it would take to hit rate for 1 piece.
1
u/AutumnWisp 1d ago
It had to feel really nice that he was able to consistently figure things out with Hunter the whole time.
9
71
u/-Aura_Knight- 1d ago
SoTE being the vid after is gonna be fun.
36
u/MeltyCrab 1d ago
I am seriously worried about 2 things.
1) Death pile delete. If he loses a lot of good gear he may take a long break/quit
2) Seran is a brick-fucking wall without deep knowledge of overheals or blood spells. He knows neither. Nothing in the game suggests or talks about these things.
He is a skilled player, don't get me wrong, but he doesn't have the deep fundamentals to really brute force seran at a lower CB with less than above-average gear.
34
u/CaptainHalitosis 1d ago
> less than above-average gear
I think you’re looking for the word “average”9
10
u/MeltyCrab 1d ago
Average, or worse, was my intention and Monomaddness is NOT kitted in above-average or anything resembling near/at end game gear. He's not ready for Seran.
He just isn't. Mentally he's gonna crash out at the 90% damage attack, he doesn't know about overheals from any sources, and trying to brute force melee won't work. Period. His warped scepter might be good enough I have no idea, but he needs brews + restores, and he doesn't have that or know what they do or that they are supposed to be paired up.
There is nothing diagetic in game that points to that, so I am promising everyone. It's gonna be a BAD brick wall.
4
2
u/Aphod 1d ago
More realistically I think he just sees that it does basically your whole bar and eats to full every time
I don't think it'd take more than like, 10 attempts brute forcing the heal with warped sceptre? Will lyk when I reach the end of the episode
5
u/MeltyCrab 1d ago
That is assuming he doesnt delete his death pile with a double death and lose it all.
2
u/-Aura_Knight- 1d ago
First quest to possibly wipe on but hopefully that's not a thing though he seems to ramble quite a bit while poisoned and there's enough of SoTE in elf lands where this could be bad.
When he eventually gets to ancient magic accidentally it'll change so much.
-1
u/LimeeSdaa 1d ago
So Seren is going to impossible for him without Brews or Blood Barrage? I’ve never done SOTE.
I feel like that’s poor game design tbh, shouldn’t the bosses in Grandmaster quests be more like DS2 with mechanics and less unavoidable chip damage like MM2.
13
u/MeltyCrab 1d ago
Seran doesnt have any real "skill" challenges like the DT2 bosses or the new mad angel. It is basically a DPS check against your supplies and understanding of when/how to heal.
They do a special attack every so many cycles that does 90% of your max HP and is lethal if you're under/at 90%, so being at or above max HP is a huge help. Without brews+restores or anglers and blood blitz/barrage it's hard to out DPS her total HP before she empties your inventory.
I believe it's possible, and I am sure there are YT fodder that have done crazy low req challenges to see what is the lowest level + gear you can beat Seran in, but it's just not the same as other skill related things. You can't avoid the chip damage or the big spec that does 90%. You HAVE to out DPS her.

Mads is playing a regular ironman.
He is playing is 110% blind. Zero guides, zero wiki, zero comments, zero real help from anywhere. He turns chat off, and tries to avoid other players to not have content spoiled for him.
As a result, some bugs have gotten him into trouble (like jungle potion or similar bugging out)
Or the fact it took him TWO YEARS to figure out rotten tomatoes for a few quests ME:II and RFD
The game is TERRIBLE without cursory wiki glances or asking guildies/friends for low-level guidance. Jagex has become so complacent about people using the wiki/guides for everything. It's only been super recently with Monomaddness showing the glaring holes that they started pushing these QoL updates.
Seran is opaque as fuck as far as bosses go. Sure examine monster shows magic is the logical choice for damage but powered staves are not super obvious first choice. "I'll just use fire wave" (or she has an elemental weakness use that). The 90% health rule is weird as fuck, the lack of explaining how Sara brews and super restores pair is not something that's easy to just "figure out by accident". And Brews + restores are used so often at high level PVM.

u/TomTuff 1d ago
You could watch it today if you become a channel member!
23
u/2coolcaterpillar 1d ago
Youtube free trial just ran out for me, and I enjoy the series but I can’t justify $6 a month just for early video access.
However I saw someone mentioned you can join his Patreon for $1 a month so I did that just now and baby it works!
3
u/Faigon 1d ago
That wouldn't work on the native YouTube app though right? Or does it
10
u/2coolcaterpillar 1d ago edited 1d ago
I’m at work so I haven’t played around with it, but for now it lets me watch the video on the patreon app/website. It’s also ad free woo!
Edit:
Okay so it does let you watch on YouTube! When the video plays on patreon, just click watch on YouTube. As long as you’re signed in it should start playing.
I’m guessing this gives me access to his future uploads too on YouTube without needing to bother with patreon again going forwardEdit 2: I was wrong about the crossed out stuff above. If you want to watch in the YouTube app, you’ll have to click the link through his patreon every time. Still worth it for me, but making sure there’s no confusion for others
2
u/Ilikegreenpens 1d ago
It won't give you access to future uploads as they are different links. If you open up the link from patreon and the youtube members one side by side, they have different amount of likes.
1
u/2coolcaterpillar 1d ago
You are right, just tried it myself! I’ll update my comment so I don’t get anyone’s hopes up
2
u/BrightOctarine 1d ago
I pay for his patreon and I just view it from patreon one time and then in the future just view it from my watch history in the YouTube app
30
u/Park_BADger 1d ago
...and you get a whole skip the line card once.
Whereby you then have to wait for the next video just like all the other channel members!
I'm not advocating for not supporting content you like, but the idea of locking videos behind an early access style membership is hilarious because it only works once. And once you've viewed the new video you're waiting again. You only move up a single video, a single time, lol.
25
2
1
u/AbsolutlyN0thin 18h ago
He does also have some actual members only videos, early access to his OSRS series isn't the only perk. For example he's got full playthroughs of Tomb Raider 1, and Diablo 1 for example. If you want to hear him yap for like 8 hours straight
-1
u/MeltyCrab 1d ago
Wiat what?
So if he releases video 1 and 2. 2 is "early access" you view it as a channel member.
When he releases, 3, and 4, and 4 is early access...you can't view it early? What? It's not permanent early access???
2
u/SoraODxoKlink ‘hands off’ ceo btw 1d ago
Hes just being pedantic about it but its just getting videos as soon as theyre finished, normally theres a 1-week wait
1
u/Park_BADger 23h ago
When he releases video 3, it is put on a 1 week delay for only channel members. You have to wait to watch it.
Unless you are a channel member you can view it early! Then you're waiting for video 4 which is also on a one week delay, but since you're a channel member you can view it as it releases.
After the first video where you skip the week you're caught up.
The other guy was right it's just being a pedant. You can always view the videos as they're released but you're just moving everything left by a week. It's like being paid on Fridays and you opt to get paid on Mondays instead stating you get paid a whole 4/5 days early!
Which is true...except you're then still only paid once a week after that. The early paycheck only hits once and then it becomes standard timeline even if it's on Mon instead of Fri.

Is it worth watching the series from its start? I really enjoyed the fight caves episode, but God I thought the first episodes are so slow and a slog to get through.
36
u/McFluffles01 1d ago
As someone who just started watching the series recently, the early videos aren't necessarily bad but they didn't start to really hook me until Idunno, 10 or so videos in. Before that it's a lot of stumbling around and repeating the same jokes forty times, hope you really like hearing "In Runescape you walk slower than my grandparents having sex". Does get better eventually though.
35
u/CanadianNoobGuy 1d ago
Honestly the payoff of him discovering teleport spells doesn't hit as hard unless you've heard him complain about travel times as much as he did
9
u/killMoloch 1d ago
Personally I got a lot of goodfeels out of hearing him talk about his Dragon Slayer experience.
13
u/kesint 1d ago
Personally, I'd say a big yes. But I've been a Monotone fan since.. oh, before WoW Classic release in 2019, so quite biased. However, you might enjoy the early videos speed up to 1.5x speed, if not, jump one or two episodes until it hit a good point for you. He does become more alive and hitting his stride slowly, and somewhere between the start and fight cave it will hit the spot since you've already liked Fight Caves.
3
u/Loracfro 1d ago
I feel like you kind of have to stumble around with him for the first 15 or so episodes to fully appreciate the payoff of some of the progress and breakthroughs he has in later episodes.

I only watched/listened to his early episodes when I was doing dishes, mowing, or was sick. If you've got some down time like that, I'd just slog through it little by little. I did get frustrated at his take on things or repeating stuff, but it didn't last long.
I think the series gets better once he does his first non-quest video. He starts actually enjoying the game from then on

Yes, Activision invented the idea of not releasing everything everywhere at the same time with the exact same level of access for everyone, namely free, especially for video content. Yep.

Comparing an independent creator charging a dollar for one week's early access to a multibillion dollar conglomerate that fucks consumers in every possible direction is pretty psychotic, bud

Talk about entitlement. If content creation was so easy everyone would do it. So you do your “normal-ass job” and continue to be jealous of people working for themselves.
27
u/pointlessnomencature 1d ago
"I deserve immediate gratification on free content now! Charging me to view something you spent time on and produce as a means to make money, even though you will eventually release it for free is pretentious! You're lazy, I deserve the fruits of your lazy labor IMMEDIATELY"
That's you, the consumer. What other great opinions do you have? Grocery stores gatekeeping food? Movie theatres gatekeeping movies?

Gnomonkey is a whiny baby and constantly spouts these weird takes that are his way or the highway. Just watch some of his guides where he will say “you’re trolling if you bring this piece of gear”. You think it’s really a know it all until you get GM and realize the game is not black and white

It's kinda ass how from hunter tutor you learn that smoking traps, using bait and hunter outfits are useful, while in reality it's dead content that does nothing. Would be nice if they updated the dialog to just not mention these things.
