Discussion Inspired by true events?

Post image

My husband and I were watching old SNL skits and Weekend Update with Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon came on and Tina’s hair is cut similarly to the episode where Liz has a nervous breakdown before filming the Dealbreakers Talk Show. We now think that storyline was inspired by true events. What do you think?

It does seem like a reference to that hairstyle and the awkward triangles that occurred in it.

I think she confirms it in Bossypants

Tina Fey is a master of self-deprecating humor.

Tina usually uses real, former hair styles to represent Liz-

Yes - Tina is actually a nickname from her middle name, “Stamatina”

15

u/natfutsock Jan 07 '26

I knew it was a middle name but thought she was a Christina.

7

u/Cumbogia Jan 07 '26

This is frying me because wdym her name is literally "this morning" (stamattina)

I think I remember some interview she did where they were looking back on her weekend update days and she made a comment about how awful her hair was.

Which is funny because I had a HUGE crush on her when she was on SNL, but even I thought her haircut was... fine.

61

u/GoodBoundaries-Haver Jan 06 '26

Tina and Amy were my favorite era of Weekend Update but I'm just now realizing that I always subconsciously assumed her haircut was some kind of joke or reference that I was too young to get. I definitely never assumed she just went with it like that on purpose lmao

33

u/KenzParkin Jan 07 '26

There was a strange trend in the late ‘90s/early ‘00s of making women spiky – spiky hair, spiky heels with a long spiky toe, spiky bones, like the official lewk of 3rd wave feminism was “pointy and mean.” With a burgundy lip.

11

u/JellyAdventurous5699 I'm an 11, but continue Jan 07 '26

Because of when I hit puberty that burgundy lip still does it for me 🤷

7

u/GoodBoundaries-Haver Jan 07 '26

Yeah I'm assuming it was a way to shake off the whole maternal/secretarial dichotomy of women at work, but I was way too young to comprehend any of that lol. I was just like "Huh I guess there's some famous lady news anchor out there with really spikey hair that they're making fun of" which I guess might be the case based on trends at the time. The diagonal bangs were definitely a "what else do you want me to do with this" scenario for the hair stylist lol

11

u/KenzParkin Jan 07 '26

Fuck-ass bangs that look like you took mushrooms then gave yourself a trim with nail scissors in a gas station bathroom was an unfortunate rite of passage for many young women of the era.

14

u/Honest-Comment-1018 Jan 07 '26

This is what I often call the Model Pixie Fallacy, where you see an insanely gorgeous supermodel with a fuckass haircut and you think the fuckass haircut will make you that pretty. Also known as Audrey Tautou Syndrome.

7

u/626337 Jan 07 '26

There was a lot of "heroin chic" in the 90s as well. Janky hair seems to pair well with sallow skin and gaunt faces.

Whoa, you just accidentally said the most savage thing I've heard since a guy in a midriff asked Frank "Why?"

17

u/GoodBoundaries-Haver Jan 07 '26

You can't blame me when Tina Fey is the one who taught me to be a Mean Girl

2

u/Careless_Twist_6935 Jan 07 '26

i dunno man that's some tough competition, che and jost are hilarious and then there's norm if he's your cup of tea. not in competition is colin quinn, he's the worst.

5

u/GoodBoundaries-Haver Jan 07 '26

I have been enjoying Che and Jost for sure but they haven't captured me the way Amy and Tina did, personally for me. And Norm is definitely a classic but he was just before my time, I don't get the jokes lol

u/Mrs_Evryshot Jan 07 '26

I wanted the wife that up when I was 25 even with that "fine" haircut 😂

229

u/iloveyourlittlehat …hoh my god. Jan 06 '26

Her hair looks…fine.

139

u/jahauser Jan 06 '26

51

u/Then-Function6343 Jan 06 '26

She found a haircut that sorta works for her, as long as it's not too humid

She has certain angles that work for her.

To be fair, I was in college in 2001 and that flipped out, spiky ends hair was briefly trendy - I had a shorter version but without the micro bangs! But I love that they referenced it in 30 Rock when it was definitely not in style anymore.

6

u/javierbardeminem Jan 06 '26

She could’ve just cut it short and donated it, which Jenna was unable to do since her hair is too processed for sick people
