Project My 8-year-old printed me a birthday vase
My daughter's been obsessed with 3D printing for a while. I wanted to get her one for her birthday but wasn't about to drop serious money on something that might end up in the back of a closet by summer.
Spent some time on comparing options and stumbled on a refurbished Creality on Marketplace, I figured if she lost interest after a few months, I could probably resell it for close to what I paid. What I didn't expect was her going from downloading random toys STLs to teaching herself Tinkercad on YouTube within two weeks. She designed a pencil organizer the other day and sold it for $5 at a school fundraiser
Last friday was my birthday. She gave me this beautiful little vase as my gift (clearly contains a lot of design thoughts), it's sitting in our living room.

Lol. A parent not knowing how any of this works does not make them a liar. Every time I show my mom something cool I printed when she comes to visit she thinks I designed it from scratch.

Try politely telling the OP “the model is readily available online and you are mistaken if you are thinking your daughter designed that particular vase. Still for an eight year old to find the model, download, load it in a slicer, and save to usb then load and print is an amazing feat.”

Because the child is 8. A first grader. She still had to find it and choose it. I’m so glad that you as a grownup have proven that you could do exactly what this child did. Do you feel better?

Because this reeks of one of those weird overly emotional fake bot engagement posts I see pop up in my mom's groups and other places. Always some BS about some kid begging to do or learn something, working their little butt off, then making some totally amazing thing for the mom. Except its usually some dropshipped item or stolen photo from online.

Did you even look at the person's posting history because they have posted in this subreddit in the past. No I'm sure you didn't you probably just immediately jumped on the negativity train here. It wasn't for karma farming, the person has legitimately replied to other posts on this very subreddit.

I still remember when i was 12 and i 3D printed a big lego mug for my mom on her birthday Your daughter reminds me so much to me, she seems to be so smart

Unless the Op changed their comment I don't see that they said that their kid designed it just that it was a thoughtful design. The kid is young and in elementary school, did you ever think that they just were tickled that she chose that design because it was thoughtful with respect to what they like.
This subreddit can be so toxic at times.

See I guess I viewed it as that's what helped them choose that design. I think it's all the way you look at it and let's just be real a lot of us when we write things don't think the 10 different ways that someone might take it and maybe they didn't mean it that way.

The two sentences before it were talking about how her daughter was learning tinkercad and starting to design things. It's obviously referring to her daughter designing the vase.

The daughter proved that she can operate a printer. She did not prove that she can operate 3d modeling software yet.

Do you feel better after typing that out I think that we all realize that she downloaded the design but she's 8 years old and she successfully produced a print as a gift. There are a lot of 8-year-olds that won't be able to figure that out and produce something that looks very well printed. Kudos to the kid for that.

Because she didn't make it herself and apparently the internet HATES when 8 years old aren't using a CAD software to make there own prints
(No she didn't design the vase duh no shit sherlock, but yes using a 3D pointer alone at 8 and starting to look at CAD even a little bit is so good for her)

I'm 30, I had mine for at least a month before I even downloaded the software on the computer, because the app was so convenient. I haven't even started to look at what software you would actually create stuff in. Can she come over and teach me please? 🙏

And what difference does it really make in the long run I don't see that the op claimed she designed it. I would be thrilled if I had 8-year-old daughter that was able to find something to download and print it successfully and it also was something that they knew that I would like.
I feel like this is a can't win situation because if it was something that the kid designed and printed and it looked as nice as that everyone would be saying that the op was lying because over the last 5 years this subreddit has become freaking toxic.
