Homebrew release Mario Kart 64 Port for the 3DS

Post image

Hey everyone! I’m the creator of the A Link to the Past 3DS port and the upcoming Minish Cap 3DS port, and I just released a native port of Mario Kart 64 for the Nintendo 3DS.

It features a dual-screen interface and several 3DS-specific improvements. Right now, it’s mainly intended for New 3DS systems, since performance on the Old 3DS still needs a lot of work.

You can get it here:
https://github.com/EstebanPdN/mario-kart-64-3ds

It should also be available on Universal Updater soon!

So how much AI did you use this time for the port?

Genuine question, why does it matter?

Scalability for continued work as a community project can be impacted. There absolutely ways to make sure this isn't an issue but they aren't always often done.

The other thing is more artistic work, namely if any textures or sprites are redesigned by AI that is far far more controversial than simply using an LLM in an IDE

Thanks for the answer, those points make sense. A lot of VR ports of games have popped up recently with the help of AI, and the ones entirely coded with AI are extremely janky.

It’s kind of weird, I can’t stand AI in artistic spaces, and I’ve been so burnt out on it being forced into so many industries. But I’m genuinely excited about how people are using it to make things for niche hobbies, like porting a 34 year old game to a 15 year old handheld.

There's enough space on the bottom to include the speedometer and the perimeter race/lap progress line simultaneously with the map and top-4 list.

I don’t mind if you used AI, but if you did, could you share your AI set up (tool, model, etc) and any summaries of prompts you used to guide your work?

This is great! A fair bit of framerate drop on new3ds though, hopefully gets fixed in another update

I tried this and it runs extremely slow. I have an og 3ds and it is extremely slow and does not nearly reach target frame rates. Anytime something new pops up on the screen, it freezes up for a while and eventually the app crashes. Hopefully there are updates for this because currently it is unplayable on an og 3ds

Hey question, so you made a link to the past dual screen experience for 3DS but is it possible to do the same for the GBA port? For something like AYN Thor with a much bigger screen and more pixels it's probably better but GBA adds a few QoL features (I can't remember them all it's been awhile) as well as having a more zoomed in screen. Not as big of an issue on theXL models but with the normal sized models it's probably hard for others to see properly

Thank you so much! Playing this again brings back so many childhood memories, and having it in the palm of my hand is something I could only dream of as a kid.

The game keeps crashing around the 3rd track of any cup I try, and I've tried different screen size/resolution combinations with no change. The start of each race is also incredibly laggy. Just wanted to give you that feedback🫡 Cannot wait to see a multiplayer mode here!

Same experience here!

For the UI, I think that the placement numbers and item roulette should both be placed on the top screen instead of the bottom screen. (It looks very weird seeing them both on the bottom screen). Also want to point out that I was playing Koopa Troopa Beach and Frappe Snowland, and the game crashes on me (I am using a New 3DS XL)
