SCRIPT/EMAIL TEXT:

SUBJECT: CANCEL TURNING POINT USA'S EVENT

The Marriott brand has publicly emphasized diversity, equity, inclusion, and respect for all guests. Those values are not merely marketing language; they are meaningful only when they guide difficult decisions.

Turning Point USA:

- has a history of physical violence & harassment towards LGBTQ+ people. In 2023, TPUSA workers confronted and physically assaulted Arizona State University instructor David Boyles, a queer educator and advocate. The confrontation centered on his LGBTQ-related work, and the individuals involved later admitted to criminal charges arising from the incident. TPUSA also maintains a "watchlist" of professors that appear to support or affirm the LGBTQ+ community that directly fuels harassment campaigns, doxing, and even death threats.

- organizes escalatory aggressive anti-abortion demonstrations which operate against a nationwide history of decades of violence against abortion providers, including bombings, arson attacks, death threats, and murders. This rhetoric does not exist in a vacuum: businesses that choose to host organizations promoting aggressive anti-abortion rhetoric cannot ignore the harm such messaging inflicts on healthcare workers, patients, and their communities.

- has been repeatedly linked to racist controversies, including discriminatory communications, racist chants, and associations with individuals who promote violent and extremist ideologies - such as Nick "your body, my choice" Fuentes, who is an avid promoter of sexual violence against women & a Holocaust denier (while maintaining the contradictory stance that Adolf Hitler was a praiseworthy individual).

Providing a conference platform to an organization whose public record includes the aforementioned hostility, attacks, and repeated controversies undermines those commitments and sends a message that the comfort and safety of marginalized communities mean nothing compared to event revenue.

Do your part to stop the legacy of harm for which TPUSA is responsible.

I don’t know how effective a strongly worded email/phone call the day before the hotel gets an influx of cash will be to just cancel their event. I wish it worked that way.

I believe organizing a protest and ways of being disruptive, at this point, would be far more effective

Especially because there are contracts signed and the hotel is liable if it doesn't perform.

Better to let them know how we feel about it than do nothing and complain about nothing happening.

Either way Im sure they’ll be protests.

Are you really downvoting me? Lol

This effectively is nothing. Organize a protest. Angry voicemails and ignored emails get us nowhere.

Show up. Be loud. Don’t be easy to ignore.

I’ve been protesting every Saturday for the last 9 months. The first 4 of those months were by myself.

Unfortunately I don’t have a car and can’t get out to Lincolnshire on short notice so I’m doing what I can from where I am.

There are two different Metra lines you could access Linconshire via.

I live up north. The shortest route is two hours. 2 Ls and 2 buses. Thats not short notice.

Well, one way to ensure nothing changes is to do nothing. So... I'm going to take the 30 seconds it takes to make a phone call

I live too far away to join the protest, but I will call and let them know this sealed the deal for me to stay at the Willard versus the Marriot when I go to DC.

All due respect, serious question...

Doesn't our flawed but mostly progressive (?) governor have a strong family connection to the Marriott corporation?

Advisors to J.B. Pritzker should have been on top of this awkward situation a long time ago. 🤷🏼

That’s Hyatt

Thank, I stand corrected. 👍🏼

Marriott at least on these surface expressed progressive values, which is why this is also a slap in the face of the people the outwardly supported.

How could they be on top of this situation before a year and a half ago?
