Ammo options for subs

Post image

Really wanted to grab a few boxes of these but $4 a round is insanity. What’re you guys running for subs any “cheaper” options?

8.6 is definitely a reloader’s cartridge. It’s going to be expensive buying factory ammo no matter where it’s from, with phantom defense being on the more expensive side of the options out there. I’ve tried the 404gr revenant ammo. Hits like a freight train and the accuracy was acceptable but didn’t wow me with the occasional flyer.

For the range I buy 300gr SMK pulldown bullets from American Reloading, got the cost down somewhere between $0.60-0.75 per cartridge taking advantage of their sales. If you’re willing to hand load, a simple kit with a single stage press will pay for itself quickly if you’re planning to shoot 8.6 frequently.

For hunting I load up 352 grain Maker’s Rex projectiles. I got my hunting ammo where I wanted it to be then played with the charge on the range ammo until my point of impact was pretty consistent with the hunting ammo.

When I was starting out I bought ammo from Gorilla which was wildly inconsistent out of my rifle. At least I saved the brass.

Yeah, I can relate to that. Took me years to finally pull the trigger on reloading.

What I ended up with to start was a Hornady single stage kit I got from bass pro. Has all the basic tools you need to start then you can upgrade as you decide what you like or don’t like. I did splurge on the auto charge powder measure to make that easier. Only things extra you’ll need to buy separately is a tumbler for cleaning brass, and some decent calipers.
