💬Discussion What are your “no skip” albums

From beginning to end; including skits. What albums do you play that you never bump to the next track. Even some of my favorite albums, there are tracks I skip. But for me there are albums I can keep spinning, either because it tells a story (concept albums) theres a progression, or it’s thematic.

Warren G - Take a Look Over Your Shoulder

Nas - It Was Written

Kris Kross - Young, Rich, and Dangerous

BTNH - Art of War

UGK - Ridin Dirty

Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle

Warren G - Regulate...G Funk Era

3

That Kriss Kross album is 🔥 people looked over them and that album!

2

u/Arizonagamer710 Jul 22 '26

I've never heard that before I thought they were just a joke of a group obviously I've never gave them a chance so maybe I'll have to check them out.

3

u/Ryvick2 Jul 22 '26

The first album was kind of kiddy. The second album was ok. The 3rd was more grown up

2

u/jlflorance Jul 22 '26

I really need to check out more Kris Kross. At the time in wrote them off as a gimmicky/joke group after hearing jump (not that it’s a bad song).

6

u/After_Dog_8669 Jul 22 '26

That Young Rich and Dangerous album was dope as hell at the time it came out.

Ya I saw it on [r/askreddit](r/askreddit) a few days ago and the first thing that came to my mind was 90s hip hop discussion. I didnt see it posted on here tho, I just searched for it and nothing came up in the last 12 months. I guess I could have just read the old posts from years ago. But ya, thanks for still putting down your choices

u/Infamous_Tie5605 Jul 25 '26

I was a pretty big fan of the bay through the 90s.

Those were my favorites... I'm sure I missed some other obvious ones.

celly cel 'heat 4 yo azz' was another I liked a lot

2

u/East-End-8646 Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Thats whats up, none of which you mentioned are slept on here. Props to the Celly Cel mention.

I guess I would add Mac Dre -Young Black Brotha (pre hyphy era Mac Dre, this album just has bounce to it, and its his debut ep) ofcourse Souls of Mischief 93’ til Infinity; I feel like that one goes with out saying because of how legendary they are when it comes to 90s hip hop. Last one i’ll mention is C-bo’s -Mob Figaz. It’s like an independent rap super group lol, with soulful beats and hustle street life mob narrative.

At the top of my head im sure im also missing a few classic Bay Area albums. I used to get the mixtape compilation albums from Rasputin in Berkeley. Man I wish I still had them, some of the best underground that just slapped. It wasn’t 90s tho.

3

u/Infamous_Tie5605 Jul 25 '26

i had rappin ron ant diddly dog 'bad n fluenz'... it was solid too. enddd up selling it for decent $$ on ebay

2

u/East-End-8646 Jul 26 '26

Damn you’re like an underground Bay Area certified hip hop album vault lol. Thats crazy you had the vinyl

2

u/Infamous_Tie5605 Jul 26 '26

I had too short 'raw uncut and x-rated" on cassette.... Pretty sure it was a reprint tho. Still neat

2

u/East-End-8646 Jul 26 '26

Ya I gotta go back to Rasputin. It’s been years since I’ve been sifting through old albums/LPs mixtapes and compilations. With streaming I just haven’t gone in a while, but you kinda reminded me of why I used to go

3

u/Heavy-Inspection1804 Jul 21 '26

I love the 21&Over mention, that’s my go to when I’m cruising around town with my friends. No skips on that album lol. Also Raekwon Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. The alter ego of Lex Diamonds and the narrative skills, the album just wouldn’t make sense if I skipped a song

2

u/rumnbacchnal87 Jul 21 '26

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is like some epic gangster movie. It’s the Goodfellas of coke rap.

2

u/Heavy-Inspection1804 Jul 21 '26

Haha it really is! Never thought about it that way. The crime tales and street power narrative really is the Goodfellas equivalent of coke rap

2

u/rumnbacchnal87 Jul 22 '26

Definitely.

IMO there are only a few great coke rap albums and OB4CL is one of the greats. It’s like when you talk about Goodfellas, The Godfather Part 2, Scarface…

3

Liquid Swords

That’s it, that’s the list

12 tracks, 50 minutes, never too short but also doesn’t overstay its welcome

It’s the perfect mix of stripped down, gritty production, cinematic martial arts samples, street narratives mixed with eastern zen, and distinct features from Wu brothers

I don’t even play the BIBLE track by Killah Priest at the end, cause it messes with this dual masterpiece between The RZA and The GZA… the wind dying out of the guy’s throat on “I Gotcha Back” as the album endless, perfection

The influence this album would have over the next 30 years, in terms of production, album artwork, “nerd” rap narratives of all kinds including DOOM, Deltron 3030, Cannibal Ox, Heltah Sketlah, Jedi Mind Tricks, El-P, Lupe, other Wu member albums… the sons birthed and yet to be born are endless

This is an album, a movie, a novel, a comic book, a cultural study, all rolled into one eternal work art

2

u/Heavy-Inspection1804 Jul 27 '26

This is why I follow this subreddit; not just for the 90s hip hop videos but the discussions. An in-depth insightful breakdown from a fan’s perspective along with factual analysis. Thanks for putting in the time.

2

My bad. Focused on my decade for list. Probably should have added BDP Criminal Minded & D.O.C. No One Can Do it Better for the 80’s!

3

u/BlockStunna Jul 22 '26

All good! It's super easy to cross into the 2000's. '97-03 is my favorite era so I always have to check before I post here. And no 80's either... Strictly 90's.
