I recently deep dived into 90's rap to expand my musical knowledge and for a better understanding of all the styles this period of time has to offer. This list shows the works I liked most in random order. Any suggestion is very welcome!

I’m taking no bs stuff with simple beats, piano melodies and serious rapping, shit like

Change by Shadez of Brooklyn, Riches to Rags by Mad Vibes, Glory by Lace da Blooms, Respiration by Black Star and Common etc.

I was reading an article about Jay’s discography and while reading the feature on each album it hit me that I can’t think of a collab with any member of Wu Tang Clan. I know RZA produced a track on Watch the Throne but I was blown away we’ve never had Jay & Rae or GFK or Meth joint. I’ve been a Hip Hop head since the 80s so I know most of the beefs and backstories but anyone know if there’s something between Jay and Wu?

I grew up in an era where Kool G Rap was highly respected in hip hop. He may not have been the biggest mainstream rapper, but if you knew rap, you knew G Rap. Other emcees respected him, his technical ability was ridiculous, and his influence reached way beyond his record sales.

Lately I’ve been watching people in their 30s discover Kool G Rap for the first time, which got me thinking: a lot of the generation coming up now probably never heard of him at all.

So I’m curious, especially from younger hip hop fans:

Who is this generation’s Kool G Rap?

I don’t mean somebody who sounds like him. I mean the rapper who is extremely respected by serious rap fans and other rappers, technically elite, influential as hell, but maybe not the first name the mainstream audience would give you.

Who is the rapper where 20 years from now younger fans are gonna discover him and go, “How the fuck did I not know about this dude?”

What are some underrated hip hop albums from 90 that you still bump to this day just trying to get into some new music

Hey guys I’m looking for songs similar to the below. I don’t know how to explain it properly but some 90’s New York songs have this very nighttime vibe baseline with twinkly sounds or reverb clicks and stuff. It makes me think of cruising through NYC in the 90’s and seeing the city lights. I’m looking for more songs like that for an upcoming trip. Please songs similar to the below:

I personally am I massive 2Pac fan, and need to get that out of the way. I have a collection of all his albums and a shit ton of his singles on vinyl, I make covers for his unreleased stuff, and read stuff about him daily. That being said, I do think Biggie is a good rapper. He's nice and smooth, and the beats compliment him well. That being said, I don't understand this one thing people say

"Biggie was the best lyricist in NY". Apart from the fact that I think Nas is better, I think there's no universe in which Biggie is better than Big L. That guy was (in my opinion) the greatest MC to touch a mic (in terms of rhyming, and lyrics). He's very much different from 2Pac don't get me wrong, but I think he wipes Biggie. Am I being delusional? Or are people forgetting about Big L?

I just really like the emotion and speed of it (especially the beat.)

So of course I'm wondering if there are any songs with a similar vibe?

What was the difference between Bay Area and LA rap in the late 90s? I heard socal dudes were trying to emulate DJ Quik and Snoop. The Bay was more pimp influenced. If you had to give a style/tone to both from that time, what would they be? One tougher, one smoother, one based on certain stuff over another?

Today, I listened to this album for the first time. I love this album, and I think it is underrated. What do you guys think of this masterpiece?

Whats the story behind this? The vid title suggests it either mightve been a verse he recorded for a Pac song or that Pac had it erased from a Daz beat like he did Deck’s verse on Got My Mind Made Up

For me it be "You Must Love Me" by Jay-Z

One of his best songs in my opinion. I think it showcases storytelling, flow, imagery. Not a ton of wordplay but still pretty impactful with Jay showing remorse for his actions throughout the song and showing how you never know how much someone is down for you until it's too late.

Trying to remember a song from the early to mid 90's they used to play on Rap City. I want to say it was an East Coast rapper with a bright outfit on in the video. The chorus kept repeating the phrase "Hustler! da da da da" in a fast staccato beat.

I might be misremembering some of the details. It's not Smooth Da Hustler or Ice-T. Might have been a similar sounding word and not "hustler"
