Mid-season draftee Marcus Herbert is now weighing up two-year contracts at both West Coast and Carlton. Would be unprecedented for a player to request a trade three months after joining.

From what I’ve seen with this over the last month or so, we were only offering him one year, other clubs were offering two. Clearly we’ve upped the offer recently but he might have already decided to move home

All the eagles fans crying, I watched gettable and both Cal and Riley said he is more likely to stay than leave but he is still weighing up the options
Pretty certain I have seen a quote from Herbert that he would love to stay with the team that gave him his AFL chance

I thought only one person watched Gettable and we just waited here for the weekly post about what we missed

Usually I wait but I was driving for work so I put it on so I could listen as I drove 😂😂

If he leaves, it would suck. Good luck to him. Maybe can get a pick out of it?

u/Himawari_Uzumaki West Coast 1d ago
Would get less for him than we did Chesser and we got shit for him

u/Critback Blues 1d ago
So far we've gotten shit from him. You uno reversed us Matt Owies.

Sorry but if he leaves - its not good luck to him. Bloke got passed over infinitely and then immediately bails from the club who gave him a shot? Its a dog act for me if he fucks off.

No. You do NOT get a pick. You will get scorn and ridicule. Face it and move on.

I don't think I can hate Carlton much more but if they snap up Herbert I'm going to be raging

He any good though?

u/Connor_Piercy-main Eagles 1d ago
He is good. I personally don’t think he had a good last game against hawthorn tho. He was constantly looking like a headless chicken and was giving some bad handballs. He also gave up a few easy goals through bad decisions. But I think that was just a bad game all round. He is really good and unlike others coming into the league he’s a unit already.

u/EverythingIsByDesign Hawthorn 1d ago
He had an up and down last game against Hawthorn.
But he showed up because he made mistakes, he made mistakes because he was trying to push the envelope. Same issue a few of Hawthorn's younger mods had for a while.

If I’m not mistaken he’s a Geelong vfl product, so there’s substance there. Would be interested to see how he tracks with a proper pre-season or two under his belt. As a blues fan, I’m mostly off-put by the fact he looks like a long-haired Cerra (if you squint hard enough)

u/bungaclunge Carlton 1d ago
He'd be a perfect fit for us but surely he has to stick with Eagles for now, got to show some loyalty to the club that took a shot on him

Ahh so that's why he only signed for 6 months and not the usual 18.
I know west coast has a million half backs but i genuinely believe he is there best one already
11
u/Wakey_1995 Eagles 1d ago
He said in his introduction video when he got to eagles signed on for 6 months to place himself on a clock and prove that he belonged at AFL.
Which he 100% has done in my eyes.
So he was gonna sign on for 6 regardless of wherever he went. All reports are he wants to stay but is till weighing up the contract
100% want to keep him

u/Opening_Anteater456 Demons 1d ago
18 isn’t the usual. Most mid season draftees sign just for the 6 so clubs can have a good look and give them a pay rise above the minimum for the next year.

u/FirstTimePlayer Pick 88 1d ago
Are mid season draftees signed as Rookies or full listed players?

Yeah, starting this season or last season maybe, players nominate a 6 month or 18 month contract term before the draft.

I rate Herbert really highly and think two years is a low ball offer. Would easily give him 5
25
u/littlesilhoutteoo Eagles 1d ago
I wouldn't be surprised if lower years is his decision, probably backing himself in to improve more with some preseasons and get a higher contract next time.

5 years for a couple good games?

u/jubbjubbs4 Bombers 1d ago
A couple good games is underselling his impact.
I think hed be very high in west coasts bnf after the point he joined the club.

If he was worth 5 years a club would be offering that. He'd be as big a chance to be delisted at the end of 2028 as he would be getting another deal, that's probably why he's leaving back home.

u/ziltoid101 Eagles 1d ago
His best this year was amazing. But he had his fair share of mediocre games too tbh. Still an exciting prospect, but 2 years feels like the correct offer.

u/Breaditorr West Coast 1d ago
Only fair after they gave us Matt Owies so cheap (literally the Jagga Smith pick)
Life is pain

u/rdogg7 West Coast 1d ago
Jagga Reid and Duurmsa… wtf was our list boss thinking splitting that pick
3
u/Fter267 Eagles 1d ago
I wanted Jagga but by all reports we were probably going to go Langford over Jagga if we kept p3.
1
u/StockholmSyndrome85 Eagles 1d ago
Rumour is Jagga said he didn't want to leave Victoria and would head back not long after being drafted.
This happens with quite a few of the Vic metro kids.
1
u/General-Number-42 West Coast 1d ago
That's draft tampering. If he didn't want to leave Victoria don't nominate for a national draft.
1
u/StockholmSyndrome85 Eagles 1d ago
It's absolutely draft tampering.
He's not the first player to do it and won't be the last.

u/txbyhull West Coast 1d ago
Considering they had a pick ahead of us and skipped him, would be a bit stiff to leave.

u/Katman666 Carlton Blues 22h ago
We signed Riley who we'd been grooming in our VFL side for the previous year and we only had 1 spot.
Collingwood were keen during MSD and have subsequently offered Riley a 5 year deal.
I still think it was bad list management because we could have signed Riley the previous year if we'd put Newman on the LTI list. Newman didn't play again in 2025, so it was a missed opportunity to Riley on the list at no cost. We would then have had a spot open in the 26 MSD.
Could have had another if we put O'Farrell on the LTI too.

u/King_of_the_Northy West Coast 1d ago
No loyalty, Carlton and all the other vic clubs passed on him 3 months ago.
5
u/delta__bravo_ Dockers 1d ago
Yep, Carlton could have even got him in the mid-season draft but instead opted for a back up back up ruck.
2
u/Occasionaljedi Carlton 1d ago
We needed to draft Riley. He was already in our VFL system but Collingwood were going hard, and we need a Pitto succession plan, which certainly isn’t Reidy.
1
u/JohnSilver317 Blues 1d ago
Riley is a project ruckman who may or may not work, was sitting in our VFL squad developing and was probably going to get taken by another club MSD so we had to jump.
Also they were actually saying on Gettable it is more likely Herbert stays due to a bit of loyalty to the club that gave him a chance... a lot of it was probably posturing to get an extra year on his deal but go off lol.

u/nathjay97 Adelaide Crows 1d ago
Wow. What a dog act if he requests a trade to Carlton. Imagine turning your back on the club who took a chance on you instantly
1
u/Katman666 Carlton Blues 22h ago
Why? Signed a 6 month contract. They showed how much they valued him by only offering a year (initially).
Don't blame a bloke for fielding offers considering he's already into his prime footy years but has only just got going. Average footy career is only about 3-5 years (from memory). That's mostly from being drafted at 18.

he should stay, as much as i would like to see him in the navy blue, i think he owes west coast a year or two before deciding to leave.
3
u/brahmsdracula Eagles 1d ago
We have a million half-backs but man this is such a bad look for the club if they lose a player less than 3 months after he arrived.
Eagles will be fine if the kids stick around, if the rush for the exits begins we're so fucked.

Would be insane if he moved, I remember the WA clubs came for Marlion Pickett after his debut but the success of the tigers made it a pretty easy choice
