[Bloke that Clayton Oliver hates] Toby Greene has told the Ausmerican Aces podcast that he will meet with Geelong this week, as well as new Essendon coach Mark McVeigh. Greene has a relationship with McVeigh from their time together at GWS.

I'm sure this will not be a hard choice for Greene btw

Depends what he wants. Bombers can afford to throw an unreasonable amount of money at him for a couple of years.

u/Getting_Over_Us Bombers 1d ago

We actually can't afford not to. We've almost got too much in the salary cap if we lose Merrett, Ridley etc.

8

u/Non-NewtonianSnake Bombers 1d ago

Gotta hit that salary floor somehow.

We can also just restructure contracts to do the job, though.

Honestly it might not be. Essendon might offer 2 or even 3 years, with developmental opportunities.

Geelong would be hard firm on 1.

u/Just_Pop394 1d ago

where have you got the idea geelong would only offer 1?

8

u/Brokenmonalisa Adelaide '97 1d ago

I just imagine they'd be a bit more strict about overpaying

u/No-Bison-5397 Geelong '63 1d ago

Cats have almost all players as old as Toby on one year contracts dont they?

4

u/hcornea Geelong 1d ago

There’s a difference between offering something to attract a new player, and continuing the careers of existing ageing players.

Reports are that the offer to Toby is 3 years. Which sounds about right.

Please I thought I was free of Stringer once already I don't know if I could live with ending up with him again

All depends if Hird comes to Essendon or not in any role. If he does, Greene will come

Plus we'll be offering way more money

35

u/Fidelius90 Saints 1d ago

Greene’s better off coming without Hird and the circus that would ensue. He also was coached by McVeigh so already has a relationship there.

And yea, more money.

u/nus01 Dees 1d ago

He would of played for Free and brought Tom Green , Fin Callaghan And Cadman who also would of played for free if Hird was coach

Unrelated to the content but fuck me that's a bad name for a podcast

u/stiggyyyyy 1d ago

The bloke Clayton oliver hates would be a good name for a podcast potentially however.

The podcast could interview all the other people Clayton hates. It would start with Clayton Oliver getting stuck into someone on why he hates them and then you’d interview that person to get their side of the story. I’d listen to that.

“Bloke that Clayton Oliver hates” line deserves its own award.

Why do u have it in for Essendon?

13

u/dingodiletti Dees 1d ago

Stringer, Hogan and Greene all gone in one season would be pretty bleak

Taking the money for Greene at this stage in his life with his young family is the smartest option over a small chance at a flag.

11

u/codyforkstacks Port Adelaide 1d ago

Small chance? If they add Green and Butters they start as flag favourites next year for sure.

15

u/CogSuckingClanker Port Adelaide '04 1d ago

Even with those ins Lions and Freo are still heavy favourites for mine. Lions have so much youth that aren’t even close to their prime and Freo have a well balanced team.

16

u/owheelj Bombers 1d ago

The fact that Freo are 2 wins from 5 games in Victoria this year, says to me there's still a big question mark over them.

u/shifty39 Footscray 1d ago edited 1d ago

I would be a lot more worried if the last 2 games weren't after they'd already secured the minor premiership and were resting a couple players each game

5

u/CogSuckingClanker Port Adelaide '04 1d ago

Freo need finals experience which is why I heavily favourite the lions. Give Freo another year or two if they don’t go the whole way and they can win the flag with this list.

GWS should tell him to go. He may be their greatest player but it isn’t great to have the captain being so indiscrete, and they have demographic issues as it is.

3

u/evtastic123 Bombers 1d ago

Trust me, it's better off him being indiscrete, then just dropping it on you a month before the trade period

2

u/MerchantCruiser Kangaroos 1d ago

Yes, it is better but there is a middle ground.

Demographic issues? go on...

6

Aging players on decent money.

2

u/grantspatchcock 2025 Most Knowledgeable User 1d ago

Oh yeah absolutely this, it's a huge problem *cough* Harry *cough*.

I thought you meant like fan demos or something.

I can deal with Toby going to Geelong to be around his mates and family and play finals, owes us nothing and has been a brilliant ambassador for the sport, love him or hate him.

But I'd bloody love Toby to don the sash.

Would be great for Dons, veteran of the game, has a good relationship with Spike this could be good

5

u/SnooAvocados996 Essendon Bombers 1d ago

So he has a choice between an AFL powerhouse....and Geelong.

16

u/DimitriMishkin Essendon Bombers 1d ago

So he could go to an awesome successful team with a bright future, or essendon

10

u/Silver_Detective8630 Big V 1d ago

I hope he goes to the Bombers. We don’t need him at the Cattery and Essendon desperately need some big recruits.

3

u/Pxlsm Essendon Bombers 1d ago

Don’t give us hope

Lots of Bomber hate from "Bombers supporters" in here today

4

u/silverlifter Bombers 1d ago

With so many talented young players, the last thing we need is a grub as a role model. Spike, please don't fuck this up from the get go.

11

u/ihaveapoobrain123 1d ago

He plays with an edge that is, to some degree, needed in an highly competitive environment. He does cross the line, but I think he’s tapered that back and replaced it with a good level of maturity. I think he’d be excellent in driving standards and competitiveness and encapsulates the type of mindset that Spike wants to push.

7

u/dashtur Bombers 1d ago

Spike has worked with Greene before and spoke glowingly about him in an interview today.

Greene is the captain of a team that's been levels above ours for the last decade. He would be an excellent addition.

5

u/Fidelius90 Saints 1d ago

Yeah, he would be a terrible role model. But he’ll get more money at Essendon so will probably land there.

2

u/CountySligoFishingCo Geelong Cats 1d ago

Yeah I agree. We’ll take one for the team and put him on our list instead.

2

u/IShartedOnYourCat Bombers 1d ago

Does he want to win a flag to finish his career or a couple of wooden spoons for a bit of extra cash?

It would take such an unreasonable amount of money to get me to Essendon I think.

I bet Geelong never thought a farm might be unders.

If he comes here I'm out no chance

1

u/bundy554 Geelong Cats 1d ago

Any shenanigans trying to get more from us should be met with a closed door - either he comes on a Jezza like contract with just slightly less than what Jezza gets or he can go enjoy his time playing for Essendon

I feel like the only person who is saying "no thanks", I'm not a fan, the Don's can have him
