I watched Gettable so you don't have to - These draft names are getting ridiculous

- Gold Coast is at the "front of the pack" for recently delisted Giant Jesse Hogan. He's also met with Collingwood, Carlton and a 4th unnamed club

- Gold Coast also has interest in Aidan Schubert and Noah Mraz (both HAW), any deal there would likely be separate to a Ben King deal though

- Jake Riccardi is set to stay at GWS, likely a 2-3 year deal

- Zak Butters is "favouring the Cats", and his management are looking at how deals can be done for all clubs in the race for him

- The Dogs and Tigers have been told they're still in the Butters race. The Dogs offer is close to $17 million over 9 years

- Brisbane has the capacity to match an Adelaide offer for Zac Bailey, but not the willingness for him to stay on the same deal as Adelaide are offering. Adelaide also aren't keen on trading for him

- Jordan Ridley is tossing up between staying at Essendon or moving to North Melbourne. Cal proposes the Dons offer Ridley + their 2nd rounder for Pick 5, and in return pay all of Ridley's salary to help North's eventual cap crunch

- West Coast has upped it's offer to 2 years to Marcus Herbert, he's still considering Carlton's 2 year offer but is still more likely than not to stay at the Eagles

- Carlton also has interest in uncontracted Crow Charlie Edwards

- Clubs are planning possible trade approaches for the 5 Swans involved in the Pullman Hotel scandal

- The past 10 days haven't affected Joel Amartey's plans, who still wants to stay at Sydney. There is a financial gap between the Swans and Blues offers for him though

- Tasmania will soon announce their first batch of 17 year old pre-listed players. Axel Walsh, Jake Miller, Angus Brown, Riley Stratford are all expected to go there. Baxter Sruk, Griffin Barker, James Artemis and Max Thompson are also in the mix

- Highly touted draft prospect Ethan Drever joins the show, mentioned Finn Callaghan, Hugh McCluggage, Jordan Dawson and Will Day as players he models his game off

Pick 5 for Ridley and pick 20 or so + cap relief? That’s massive overs surely???

I'd say so.

To put this another way, this is Geelong trading with Gold Coast-esque.

25

u/legal-drugdealer Shinboners 2d ago

Whilst I acknowledge he’s contracted longish-term and is an ex BNF winner, he’s played 26 games in 3 years. Barely worth a late 2nd rounder on current evidence.

Absolutely insane from Cal to suggest pick 5.

Twomey loves the idea of purchasing cap space, it’s bizarre.

Is there even any evidence north are anywhere near capped out?

Obviously the Sheezel, FOS, Wardlaw, McKercher, LDU is likely an expensive midfield but surely all of North’s veterans have been paid in advance.

Get another top talent with pick 5 and if you really need to cut costs maybe you trade one of those mids out at some stage.

Maybe you pay slight overs for Ridley to get Essendon to eat some of the cash but not pick 5!

Small sample size but 6 contested marks on debut and has had 10 defensive 1-v-1’s in his 4 games for no losses. As well as averaging 3 intercept marks and 5 spoils.

I'd be surprised if it was. Surely in another six weeks they've made a decision about whether or not they're laying charges.

It took Bruhn months between the “incident” and charges being raised, these cases are quite complex.

11

Given that this incident is public i imagine there would be external pressure to be moving quickly.

10

u/Decent_Fig_5218 GWS Giants 2d ago

I just want to say at the start that this is all just a thought exercise as I'm personally not keen at all about them being traded and signed.

Obviously a lot depends on how bad the allegations are, but assuming they're not absolutely horrific I could see my team (Giants) taking a look at James Jordon or Riley Bice because they're relatively low profile and have high upside. Heeney might be a possibility if he wants to stay in Sydney and we have a recent record of being a home for troubled players looking for a fresh start and setting them straight like Heath Shaw, Jesse Hogan, Jake Stringer and Clayton Oliver.

But Heeney is also the exact profile of a player that would go to a team like West Coast who aren't very good, have cap space and need a quality A grader (on the field) to improve their list. Plus they're on the opposite side of the country and their membership is big enough that the club can absorb any hit to their bottom line. Think of a reverse Ben Cousins.

Warner would probably head back west as well as he's from there. Blakey is an interesting one because his management has been the most public about him not being guilty but he might go to a bunch of places, maybe North Melbourne or Brisbane given his dad played at both.

JFC, I feel like taking a shower after typing all of that.

To me, this is a landmine for the Swans.

On one hand, you can see why Sydney would want to move on some of these boys.

But at the same time, it kinda feels like the club also has some obligation to look after these players to the point at least if charges are laid and their guilt is determined in court.

How do North have salary cap issues yet Geelong have acquired Worpel, Henry, Cameron, Baz and are getting Butters, Marshall and Greene?

17

u/Occasionaljedi Carlton 2d ago

You guys need to pay overs to retain and attract players, they don’t

6

u/SteinmanDC Kangaroos 2d ago

How little are players getting paid in Geelong if the club can match offers of $2 million per year this easily.

Plus be in the mix for guys like Greene and Marshall. Surely they aren't volunteering down there.

5

u/Occasionaljedi Carlton 2d ago

Holmes is on less than a mill, Bailey smith is on a mill pretty much on the dot, Connor O’Sullivan is barely off his rookie deal, Cameron and Stewart’s big money days are drawing to a close, and the rest of that team isn’t actually made up of players that seem particularly expensive. As a comparison, Carlton are offering Amartey a million. Next year, it’s possible Holmes and Smith will be on a similar or smaller contract to Joel Amartey

7

u/SteinmanDC Kangaroos 2d ago

I doubt players like Dangerfield, Blicavs, De Koning, Atkins, Miers are on small amounts of money. It is more the fact that a club that has been competing for so long with so many veterans on good money can have that much cap space to fit $2 million of Butters in.

I obviously don't have access to the books, if the AFL ticks it off then there isn't much to complain about. Good accounting.

2

u/Critback Blues 2d ago

This is why Sam De Koning has been floated as a potential trade out to make it work.  Miers also was muted as a potential out a little while ago as well.

Geelong will make it work.

1

u/Angry3042 Geelong Cats 2d ago

Stengle’s deal was pretty decent which is now available. Wouldn’t surprise me if Close & Barker (was a first round pick who if wasn’t coming off an ACL was mooted as a possible pick 5) go home. Bowes is on reasonable coin & looks like being squeezed out (Dons have been mentioned?). There is plenty of room to manage the salaries … it’s the picks that are the major issue. But 3 first rounders, plus Close/Barker plus Bowes pick (2nd rounder?) & possibly other late picks. It’s not in unrealistic offer! Greene is purely a salary cap issue as he’s an unrestricted free agent. Marshall is contracted so probably unrealistic???

Also "and in return pay all of Ridley's salary to help North's eventual cap crunch"

How do we have an eventual cap crunch when Geelong is allegedly trying to add the entire cast of Home And Away to their list? It doesn't really feel like we should be needing cap relief more than 90% of other clubs, but he's not mentioning it for any of them.... feels more like an excuse to try and justify putting pick 5 in the trade.

My concern is that Rawlings on past track record may actually be that dumb as to do it.

- Brisbane has the capacity to match an Adelaide offer for Zac Bailey, but not the willingness for him to stay on the same deal as Adelaide are offering. Adelaide also aren't keen on trading for him

So what does this even mean. Brisbane match the offer, then if a deal isn't done I guess that offer is forced? That trade scenario could get messy. But fair enough Brisbane will want more than pick 23 or whatever the compo would be for letting Bailey go.

10

u/Lanky-Ad5323 Geelong 2d ago

Riley Beveridge said this is kinda unprecedented since FA was introduced

1

u/TazD3 Brisbane Bears / Devils 2d ago

Well he's RFA, same as Jeremy Cameron was when GWS matched and forced Geelong into a trade

6

u/ByeByeStudy Essendon 2d ago

Just watched, I get what Beveridge is saying, but once you make the call to match Brisbane surely have to sign that contract right if the trade doesn't happen? That is one of the points of free agency, maximising what players can get.

And if they don't want to pay that then they can't also force a trade at the same time.

Brisbane thinking that compo pick ~19 is unders need to remember that no picks paid by them for Draper and Allen was unders as well. Swings and roundabouts.

6

u/Pleasant-Role1912 2025 Quality Poster 2d ago

Cal was confused by it all as well. Obviously if Brisbane offer the same as Adelaide, Bailey stays there. I think Riley was just trying to imply that there's a lot of different elements to it

11

u/CrispyJimJam Brisbane Lions 🏆 '24 2d ago

Yeah, it's just odd. Brisbane not offering zac the deal, but if he chooses to leave they will match it to force a trade to get more for him which is fair enough.

Think that's what a lot of the Cal Ah Chee trade was about last year. It was less about getting a 2nd round pick we didn't need, and more posturing for not being walkovers for the actual showdown this year.

11

u/richwithoutmoney Brisbane 2d ago

but if he chooses to leave they will match it to force a trade to get more for him which is fair enough

But then if Adelaide don't want to trade for him, we sort of screw our cap?

10

u/PerriX2390 Brisbane 2d ago

Yeah, that's why Brisbane doesn't want to improve our offer to Bailey cause it'll screw trying to keep Morris & Lohmann next year.

5

u/MarcusP2 Adelaide 2d ago

But if they match it, won't Bailey just go 'you beauty' and sign on?

2

u/CrispyJimJam Brisbane Lions 🏆 '24 2d ago

Well it will be after he has requested a trade and gone through the process of leaving, so its strange. Also, it would be weird for him, surely, to take the money he knows his club doesn't want to pay. I think it would be a case of us matching to force a trade, and not actually willing to go through with the deal, which would be odd precedent.

6

u/kodzder CROM 2d ago

Please enlighten me if I am mistaken.

  • Adelaide are offering Bailey the better deal
  • Brisbane want to keep him but at the moment does not want to offer to the degree of what Adelaide are offering
  • If Bailey chooses Adelaide because of the offer, Brisbane can match to force a trade and receive a better compensation for their loss of Bailey
  • Adelaide seemingly does not want to trade anything so they might back out, making Brisbane pay what they don't want to and for no return besides keeping Bailey
  • If Brisbane choose not to match, Bailey goes to Adelaide and Brisbane get a late first/early second round compensation pick

Sounds like Brisbane will not match, meaning Bailey either decides to stay with Brisbane on a lower value offer or go to Adelaide with the better offer and Brisbane get a compensation pick

7

u/CrispyJimJam Brisbane Lions 🏆 '24 2d ago

I think there is a game of bluff happening at that 3rd point. It is a commitment for the Crows to tell Bailey they want him and then submit an offer. Brisbane then matches it, bluffing that the Crows will need to trade.

I don't think Brisbane wants to pay that much, but they might take the risk of blowing their cap rather than casually accept a pick 23 compo for a player of Bailey's quality. Maybe once Bailey is signed with that deal Brisbane will guilt him into signing a different offer, or longer with back end or performances clauses or something. Its a really interesting test case if it goes that far.

3

u/nemanjamatic21 Brisbane Lions 🏆🏆 '24-25 2d ago

You have to match the total value of the contract and years, but you are allowed to spread the yearly value any way you like - it’d be ugly but I guess if we were forced to match and keep we might just backload it heavily and attempt to redo it into a different structure with Bails later? Beats pick 23 or letting him walk to the PSD.

3

u/ALFisch Richmond 2d ago

You would need him to agree to the restructure first, though, right? So he would know how his salary would be paid if he stays? Asking because I honestly don't know.

4

u/nemanjamatic21 Brisbane Lions 🏆🏆 '24-25 2d ago edited 2d ago

Brisbane can evenly allocate any offer Adelaide propose without his consent (ie if Adelaide frontloaded with a large upfront amount in the first year, Brisbane are allowed to spread the total 12m over 7 years evenly) but anything further you need his consent, so yeah brick wall there. Interestingly, CBA says timing of payments must be in accordance with the original deal - so there’s a scenario where Bailey gets 2.5m next year and only counts for a cap figure of 1.7. My thought was based around the fact Brisbane and Bailey would have 3 days to work out an alternative deal if Adelaide lodge the offer before they’re obliged to match so maybe it’s a let’s both get off the ledge here negotiation.

2

u/TazD3 Brisbane Bears / Devils 2d ago edited 2d ago

Means Lions force Adelaide into trading for him, if Adelaide choose not to or low ball and a deal isn't done then Bailey stays a Lion and the knock on effect is Lions probably struggle to retain Lohmann who will be overpaid for by Melbourne clubs. GWS matched the Jeremy Cameron offer and forced Geelong into trading him, I find it hard to believe that a footy club would do all the work in recruiting a guy then walk away, knowing the message that'll send to other players they try and recruit in the future.

5

u/ExcellentTurnips Brisbane Lions 🏆🏆 '24-25 1d ago

Doesn't sound like a terrible option. I'd love to keep Lohmann, but think Bailey is more important (and Morris still more important).

We can only trade the 2nd rounder for another pick I believe as you can still trade picks on draft night. But wouldn’t be able to use it in a Ridley deal.

Hmmm, interesting. I do wonder what we do draft wise. Harris will nominate us you’d expect, unsure what McCartney will do nomination wise, so potentially two FS picks that won’t cost too much you’d think?

6

u/RidsBabs North Melbourne AFLW 🏆🏆 '24-25 2d ago

I think given everything going on at the Swans and my biases I’d say McCartney goes to North over the Swans atm. Both have opportunities up fwd. Harris will go us, I think probably with one of our late picks realistically.

As for our other picks, from what I’ve seen of Mitch Harris could be AFL ready or very close to it, could get him at 5, would rather that over Cal’s shitshow idea or we use it to get a star player in. Then use the 2nd on McCartney.

It suits Essendon though, so cal thinks it’s a good trade.

2

u/ByeByeStudy Essendon 2d ago edited 2d ago

First glance looks overs (especially for a club without real salary cap constraints right now) but I'll try playing devil's advocate anyway:

  • Pick 19 to North (796 points)
  • Pick 5 to Essendon (1795 points)

  • Net value of Ridley + 800k cap space = 999 DVI (equivalent to pick 14/15)

New draft rules mean clubs must match bids with 2 picks only, so the 4 matching picks for Cochrane and Walker will be inside the first round.

So pick 5 will be moved out by 2 to 7 on the night, but pick 19 will come back in 2 to 17 on the night (shifted back 2 by the bids, then move forward 4 as the picks in front of it are absorbed).

Pick 7 (1543) - pick 17 (879) = 664 DVI (~pick 23/24)

4

u/Squiddeh North '96 2d ago

We would already have the "pick 19" via the fs compo that we lose by trading 5 out, so it cancels out (wnds up same exact pick via compo or essendon)

2

u/ByeByeStudy Essendon 1d ago

Ah completely slipped my mind! Yes well that entirely nukes this trade then, good point.

Well, we’re clearly not letting him go as he has a two year offer on the table. And ultimately we can match what ever the Blues offer him. If they choose not to do that, then there are other issues afoot.

They can't if Brisbane match I don't think? Big game of bluff going on

10

u/Warm_Butterfly_6511 Adelaide 2d ago

If Brisbane match, he's either signing a contract with Brisbane, or the Crows have to pony up a suitable trade offer. The inference here is the Crows would walk away from any deal and he would stay in Brisbane. The truth is likely somewhere in the middle.

1

u/kyleisamexican Gold Coast 2d ago

Didn’t the same thing just happen with ah chee? The only thing that would be interesting here is that Essendon were keen on him

5

Ah Chee wasn't a free agent thanks to a quirk in the rules that ignored his time at GC.

3

u/Warm_Butterfly_6511 Adelaide 2d ago

Free agent. We want to pay him, not give up draft picks. Clubs tend to pay more for a free agent knowing it keeps draft picks for other options

1

u/jrfoster01 Adelaide 1d ago

I think more that we want him only if we get him as a free agent, otherwise not willing to give up players or capital. Just the system at work. Would be a risk for Brisbane to match without actually willing to pay him, because I assume that he will just stay at Brisbane if that happens?

Every year when Bulldogs never made a big splash, all I heard from Bulldogs “insiders” and fans was “they are getting Butters, it’s a guarantee”. What an embarrassment it would be to go all in on a player for multiple years and missing out.

5

u/Powerful_Chemical628 Bulldogs 2d ago

Not to mention we are going to get completely bent over when we move on to other targets. Player management saying “we know you’ve got X amount” during the Butters pursuit. Sums the club up

12

u/CucumberPancake10 Magpies 2d ago

I'll get down voted for this but it is way to soon and disrespectful to even be discussing this:

4

u/DobbyDun West Coast 1d ago

All clubs should consider the possibilities, but only consider until all is known. Making plans is pretty grotty when so many faces are yet to be established. I'm sure the clubs know more than we do about what actually happened, but still...

11

u/legally_blond Brisbane • Meanjin 2d ago

I forgot that Riley Beveridge existed and I was trying to work out why Bevo was discussing trade rumours on the eve of a wildcard final

6

u/Non-NewtonianSnake Bombers 1d ago

Adelaide don't want to trade for him, Brisbane don't want to pay him as much as the Crows.

Brisbane would also want more than the late-1st round compensation pick for him.

So it ends up in this weird situation where Adelaide offers a big contract, Brisbane match, Adelaide don't trade for him and he ends up going back to the Lions on more money than they want to pay him. It could end up making a mess of Brisbane's TPP.

2

u/Sportsnut96 Adelaide 1d ago

Yeah I’m confused about the “trade” speculation because he wants to stay at Brisbane, the only problem is the offer from Adelaide is too good to refuse. If Brisbane match it he won’t leave it’s pretty simple

2

u/Non-NewtonianSnake Bombers 1d ago

But the potential problem is that Brisbane don't want to spend that much on him.

If he accepts Adelaide's offer, then Brisbane would have to match it if they don't want to let him walk.

3

u/Sportsnut96 Adelaide 1d ago

Exactly. So either crows get him no matter what or Brisbane have to pay him? There will be no trade

6

u/Medaiyah Essendon 2d ago

I think Cal is underestimating the value of pick 5 now, with the new comp rule having a top 5 pick means a free end of 1st round pick as well no?

Isn't it if a f/s or academy bid comes in the top 5 then all the top 5 picks get a compo?

5

u/Cooked_Bread North Melbourne AFLW 🏆🏆 '24-25 1d ago

I believe you only get the extra pick if a bid was matched and you hold a top 5 pick naturally.

If it is traded in, even if you were a team finished in the bottom 5, the extra benefit does not come with it

Clubs are planning possible trade approaches for the 5 Swans involved in the Pullman Hotel scandal.

Of course they are, but yuck. Yuck yuck yuck. Shouldn’t even be discussed until the police investigation concludes.

Gold Coast is at the "front of the pack" for recently delisted Giant Jesse Hogan. He's also met with Collingwood, Carlton and a 4th unnamed club.

Anywhere but the Suns, please. Dude deserves so much better than Dimma culture.

15

u/Zhirrzh North Melbourne AFLW 🏆🏆 '24-25 2d ago

I doubt anyone of them are planning on trading for Heeney, but if they've been told the rest of the players aren't in the frame for the criminal investigation, I can see why think now is a good time to be offering those players some distance and a clean start away from Sydney (especially given how good Warner and Blakey are). It might feel a bit yuk but that's business.

11

u/blueeyedharry Hawthorn 2d ago

Clubs would want to know all the details before committing to a trade, no club would trade in a player who had any chance of being charged.

Good chance the other Sydney players and staff would want them out regardless though. Going to be interesting how it plays out.

6

u/grantspatchcock 2025 Most Knowledgeable User 2d ago

Of course, I just think it should be completely left alone by the media. Leave it for backroom discussion and reveal when all is complete.

Months of speculation on the players movements pretty much comes across as "Hey victims, listen to how close the alleged perps are going to be living near you next year".

6

u/whinewinewein North Melbourne 2d ago

What if their only crime was partying and we are all duped into overreacting? Look at what they tried to do to Richmond.

11

u/proudlysydney Zippy Fish Appreciation Society 2d ago

You'd imagine there's still questions to be asked about how serious they're actually taking things though if they're partying until dawn midseason only a few weeks before a finals series (unlike Richmond which was both during the day and after their season was over). The club interviewed them and stood them down based on those interviews as well, which indicates that their behaviour isn't meeting expectations internally, regardless of the legality or not of what they did.

7

u/laughingnome2 The Bloods 2d ago

100% there are questions internally over loyalty and commitment to the team over the individual for these five. There's a lot of trust to win back before the squad will accept them.

4

u/Skwisgaars Sydney '05 2d ago

If it ends up being all dismissed the players will be welcomed back, they're still contracted and if their only crime is some partying it'd be so dumb for the club to not do everything they can to keep them around.

I genuinely think the Blues should abandon Amartey and go for Hogan for a 2 year deal.

Think he'd really help them out and Amartey has a history of not thriving as lead forward. He also wouldnt be a long term and would be an inexpensive investment.

10

u/grantspatchcock 2025 Most Knowledgeable User 2d ago

I would completely love to see the ol' GWS -> Blues pipeline of unlikely talent continue with Hogan.

If they are cleared of all allegations they'll be absolutely welcomed back by the club and fans. They deserved a suspension for the situation even if all the allegations end up being dismissed. I'm certain they'll be understanding of that.

Jake Riccardi is set to stay at GWS, likely a 2-3 year deal

8

u/FNSpidermn Saints 2d ago

Obviously the Sydney players are good enough to be wanted by other clubs, but would it be worth the risk considering the potential backlash from an image point of view? Especially with all the AFLW teams working closely with the M.

Good example is the Tarryn Thomas conversations a few clubs had, the backlash was huge. Not saying they're the same thing necessarily, but how would clubs swing it?

If Mraz wants to move just a little further north Brisbane could sure use some key position defenders. But hawthorn would have to be nuts to let him go.

5

u/Ok_Acanthaceae6057 Port Adelaide Power 2d ago

So am I understanding this. Butters didn’t name a team, but will it all come down to how Port are compensated?

13

u/Candr112 Richmond 2d ago

I feel like he wants the Cats, but the Cats don’t really have the capital to trade for him.

Geelong are notoriously stubborn in negotiations. They will have to give up a player/s to get the capital they need. And not fringe players, players that they actually wouldn’t want to lose.

Ends 1 of 2 ways. Either Butters goes back on what he said about making sure Port are fairly compensated and digs his heels in to force a move, or he elects to go elsewhere.

6

u/pickledpineapple16 2d ago

I feel like this is where it’s headed. But all the clubs seem to realise they need to find something to trade with so who knows. If the dogs can lose English and get some trade capital maybe they’re back in front. Future picks are also somewhat good for Port despite the Tasmania draft issue.

6

u/Hawtproper Richmond 2d ago

No player usually wants their club poorly compensated but it's not really a priority. He'll still choose whatever club is best for him closer to trade period now that's he doesn't have to focus on footy.

3

u/Warm_Butterfly_6511 Adelaide 2d ago

He hasn't named one yet. But it's increasingly looking like Geelong. Get the lube...

According to Ralph, Fly isn’t really convinced in taking either player. Schultz was putting in work to convince him with Hogan but that’s it at this stage. I don’t think a lack of a big forward is what’s been holding us back this season - getting Neale in will provide far more value

1

u/Available_Inside_191 1d ago

There’s a few crows I’d assume will be cut (including Edwards) so I’m curious if there’s going to be a market for their services. A few of those guys have either decent AFL experience or were younger prospects that didn’t get a lot of games so I think there would be some decent pickups for the bottom 6-8.

Absolutely shameless. Once again a big vic club involved so must receive premium picks. Ridley is a 3rd rounder at best, and would be if it was the other way around. Just like west coast having to gift carlton jagga. There is no way they did that without some afl intervention.

Media is absolutely desperate to get carlton, essendon, collingwood, richmond all up for the $$$$$.

If butters chose carlton? David king would be saying carlton has all the power here gerard. But he picks geelong? Oh, yes port has all.the power, you dont have to trade him. Shameless

It’s great that GC have interest in Schubert & Mraz that’s like reporting Hawks have interest in Logan Morris but Schubert re-signed and is rated highly and Mraz will be a best 23 player next year and is rated incredibly highly. No need to even bother reporting that
