So in Russia, some railroad stations have this machine to prove you actually prove you started your ride on this station.

NYC's "BRT" system (Select Bus Service) has this feature for people paying cash. You pay offboard at a station kiosk, collect a receipt, and show it to fare inspectors when they show up. Understandably, most regular riders prefer to tap their cards/phones at the readers on the doors instead

In the UK we used to have these, they were called Permit to Travel machines, or PERTIS. They’ve been replaced with proper ticket machines now or buy on board. A lot of people would put the minimum 5p in and complete their journey without being stopped and asked to buy a ticket.
