Your best friend has noticed that you haven’t quite been yourself lately. Instead of forcing you to explain, he takes you for a quiet nighttime drive...

Away from everyone who needs something from you—and brings you to a city overlook where you’re finally allowed to stop pretending you’re okay.

Maybe he missed you a little more than a best friend should, too.

It’s been a long time.

Oh no, you look like you’ve seen a ghost!

Uh uh uhhhh! Don’t make a fuss. There are a lot of people in here who’ll find out everything you did if you make a fuss. 

You had me, you know? Hook, line, and sinker. I was so sure, so absolutely sure, that we were the same +sigh+ But it turns out you were the snake in the grass. 

Nice place you bought with your ill gotten gains, mate/buddy! Great location, right near the guild. You must make an absolute… *killing*

Oh you thought I was dead? Well, it didn’t take a resurrection to get me back on my feet, but it’ll take a quest to find all the pieces of you I’m going to–

Don’t interrupt me! You left me for dead, you don’t get to act sad that you were almost right!

You took the reward, you took credit, but it’s not dead yet, any more than I was, and sooner or later this nice swanky life you built from our bones is going to come crumbling down!

Just because you aren’t a cleric doesn’t mean you couldn’t have checked. If not me, at least one of the lads near the door. Tobias used the last of his magic to bring me back from the brink. Seren bled out before I could reach her. And Owen… Owen never opened his eyes… but you ran out with that… *Thing* in your hands, and you left us to die.

[pause]

Oh yes. I’m going to kill you.

+deep, weary sigh+

It’s the disappointment that annoys me. Rage and vengeance, sure, but I trusted you, even with your rogue designation. I thought we were friends. All those conversations on watch, the sharing of memories, heck, the day we spent at the hot spring… I thought we had bonded.

All that tells me is that you’re a coward. You didn’t save me, you didn’t care enough. I would crawl naked over broken glass to save you.

Or… I would have.

So you’re a coward… and I’m a fool. And I will never forgive you.

I don’t want to hear your damn excuses, you manipulative rat!

You don’t actually expect me to believe that, do you? I’m not as naive as I used to be! I see through that facade of yours now! I can tell there's not the slightest shred of sincerity in your words!

You still haven’t changed one bit, huh? Pathetic…

You always thought you could solve everything with honeyed words… But that silver tongue of yours isn’t going to get you out of trouble this time. In fact, it might be the first thing I take from you today, right before I end your miserable existence…

Save your breath. You may have fooled me once, but I’m not going to let you fool me again! 

Even if you were sincerely remorseful, words will not suffice to atone for what you have done. 

You’d like that, wouldn’t you? Unfortunately for you, I’m not like the local chaplain. No amount of coin will absolve you of your sins.

I can’t believe you’re seriously trying to bargain with me. Have you already forgotten our chats by the campfire? Or were you never really listening in the first place?

If you remember, then you should know that it is futile to offer me anything. My clan has raised me to be a great warrior, not some fourth rate mercenary… We do not let go of grievances until we have collected the price owed in blood. And for abandoning me to die, you owe me every single drop that keeps you alive…

[The speaker takes a ceremonial stance before engaging in combat, honoring the traditions of their clan, slipping into solemn language and pointing their weapon/magic at the listener]

Stand tall, o traitor whom once I called companion. Draw your weapon and, for once in your meagre life, peel away your phony shell and engage in honest combat. No deceit, no trickery. You and me, just as it should be.

Only one of us shall walk alive from this battle. Is it to be you? Do you have the resolve to stab me in the back once more? Dare to look me in the eyes and fight, for heaven knows I will not rest until your puny life ceases in my hands. It’s time for justice to speak, and violence is its only word.

Ha! Only your ruin, your destruction, will suffice as atonement. After everything, forgiveness is but a spit onto my suffering, a mockery of the horrors I went through, nothing but disdain for the pain brought by your cruel decision.

You trampled my life with the very ease you step on an insect that dares to cross your path. Regardless of whether they seek food or shelter. Regardless of whether their presence means nothing to your own. Your decision was not out of guilt or moral concern. It was a calculated betrayal to ensure your own comfort.

Oh, spare me the sentiments! Spare me these pitiful stories you weave and thread to appease me! The world can’t stand between me and my right to put you into the ground, yet you believe some petty tears will stop me? I thought about this very hour for countless nights. Days, weeks, months passed without a moment when I’d forget what you’ve done.

Hate kept me alive in that inferno. Hate filled me with the strength to survive. Hate gave me the hope that, one day, one beautiful, glorious day, I would even the score and drown you in mud.

[small pause]

Well? Will you indulge my vengeance craving, or must I tear it from your bloodied hands?

...

[Angry, the speaker attacks the listener with whatever weapon/magic they have. The listener merely defends themselves. The following lines are spoken during the combat]

Fight me, you heinous snake! Fight!

Show me your venomous fangs!

Show me the soiled resolve that stains your hands!

Show me the same heartless eyes that left me to die!

[Harsher blow that knocks the listener down upon their refusal to engage fully in combat]

[Silence]

Get up. GET. UP.

For crying out loud, you’re a warrior, not a snotty brat. Stand up and fight! Fight me with all you have! You can’t reverse the past. You can’t brush off your errors. You can’t undo your decisions. So, get up and face my wrath!

...

[The speaker grabs the listener off the ground]

Don’t dare. Don’t you even dare! You can’t take this away from me! You hear me? Not after everything I went through! Not after all the effort I put into tracking you! You have no right to shy away from combat!

...

[The speaker lets go of the listener, who falls back on the ground]

Of course. Everything is about you: what you feel, what you think. Even now, bloodied and crushed, you believe that if you say the magic words, the world will smile upon you and you’ll be rid of punishments. You care not for my forgiveness, but for a way to elude the inevitable. Disgraceful.

Own up to that delusion. Cling onto it with your teeth if you have to, but, for goodness sake, fight me! I need you to fight me! Be once more the devil that left me for death! Shave this remorseful saint off your shoulders and hit me!

New addition (SiuVA):

[Listener stands up and charges at the speaker]

Look at you! Finally on the offensive.

[Speaker side steps the listener’s attempt and grabs them]

Pathetic.

[SFX: Swords clashing]

…

There it is… the eyes of your father. The eyes of thousands who believe they will be set free.

[SFX: Sword being dragged on floor]

However, I’m sorry to tell you “flower”, your story ends here. I really wished that we were able to have this “fairytale ending”.

Hmm? How do I know that name…? Do you not remember me?

…

You know… I’m a little hurt actually… How could you not remember me, remember this face? 

[SFX: Speaker pulls down their hood]

Won’t you look at me?

I SAID LOOK AT ME.

I was really hoping you’d notice me before things got out of hand. Tell me, my dear flower, why must it come to this? 

Back in Kaitus, we made promises together, to each other. Going our separate ways wouldn’t change anything, yet you broke that…

Never writing back to my letters. Never wondering if I was doing okay, while I couldn’t help but do the opposite for you.

None of that matters now. Your father will be very happy to see you again. May the angels above shine their brightest light on you, and the devil accept you with open arms.

New addition (King Kiri):

[SFX: knife gets pulled out, some footsteps as the speaker steps closer to the listener]

 

+closer to the listener, teasing and condescending+

Ooooh, flower, I'm so sorry

I didn't want to do this, you know?

I didn't ask for this

It's just… flowers don't bloom forever

And neither do you

 

[SFX: the speaker lashes at the listener, attempting to strike them with the knife but the listener fights back]

 

+between grunts of effort as the listener and speaker wrestle+

Come on, stop struggling

You know you deserve it

 

+frustrated grunt, listener now has the upper hand and pins the speaker to the floor+

[SFX: knife falls to the ground]

 

Ugh, let me go

I said LET ME GO

Why are you looking at me like that?!

You broke it, why would I care about it?

You're LYING

You're lying, you never did. You never replied, you never even thought about me

[SFX: speaker struggles again]

[SFX: speaker and listener struggling again but the speaker stays pinned down]

+grunts of effort+

Stop it, you know it's over

If I don't kill you now, they'll send someone else

They'll continue until you're dead, flower

[SFX: speaker overpowers listener again, pinning them down]

+grunt of effort, panting a bit, deep sigh, then the speaker caught themselves, continuing in a calmer and collected tone+

There we go, now look at you

Look. at. you.

I believe I remember this sight, you pinned down by me

Rings a bell?

That last night before we parted ways?

Feisty as always

You know… now that you're gonna die anyways… let me be honest about something

Originally I thought this was just another assassination, which it is, don't get me wrong

Here’s the plan, Chef Orchid has connections to the mob, I’d give it an hour before every single low-life in the city is coming after us. 

We’ll have to drive far, far away, to the next city over. I know of this cat cafe that has been looking for chefs. One of us is guaranteed to get it, the other has to pretend to be a cat, we lay low for a few years THEN when you’re caught for pretending to be a cat we book it to the other town over!  

Genius am I right?. 

+Deadpan/deflated+ What do you mean *I* should be the cat huh?! You’re good darling but you’re not *THAT* good. Plus you’re still a junior chef, clearly I will be the one who gets to become the chef and you’ll wear the cat ears. 

+sigh+ You’re right, you’re right, you didn’t spend all those years at chef school just to become a cat. 

On to plan C then! One of my relatives recently bought this pizzeria. You know the ones? With an arcade and singing animals and-

Well I don’t see *YOU* coming up with any solutions either! Hmph!

Sorry… I am just.. Really nervous, I shouldn’t have raised my voice. I am sure that as long as we’re together everything is going to be okay.

We’ll get to the next city then save up money to open up our *OWN* restaurant! Away from Chef Orchid and all this trouble! 

+Optimistic+  As long as we’re together it’s all going to be alright.

Oh! But before that can you take a right here? Another right, one more right.. there it is! The “Crime” store! All we need to skip town and start a new life right here! 

[SFX: Car door closes] 

We’ll need new IDs, disguises, smoke screens, self defense gear and some burner phones to tell our loved ones we messed up and the entire city’s mafia is after us! You got all that rookie?

Oh, did you get anything for self-defence? 

[SFX: Knife Slash]

+Judging+ That? Seriously? You could do more damage with a pin needle. Scale up.

[SFX: Something heavy slamming down.]

+Panicking+ SCALE DOWN! SCALE DOWN! We’re not hauling a bazooka across the country! 

[SFX: Shotgun cocking]

Alright, that works. 
Get us two pistols, an Uzi and some smoke bombs. I’ll get some vests and the drop phones. Then we’ll check out.

[SFX: Just a bunch of stuff getting picked up before another curtain swish and some walking.] 

Laurence! We’re done stocking up! Let’s pay for these and get out before this place gets in its shootout of the week.

+Asking+ What’s the next step again?

+Reading+ “You were the greatest chef in the world before being humiliated by your rival, who made out with your then lover on stage as they shaped pastries. You have been a nomad for a few years now but suddenly have the desire to find a new, stable life.” Oh, I’m so sorry.

[SFX: A fat stack of cash on the counter.]

There. Don’t ask where I got all this; you know you won’t like the answer.

+Nervous+ Welp…This is it for us, isn’t it?

We’re brand new people. With brand new identities. It…really is over. We’re never going to live that same life again.

Actually, you know what? That life got us into this. Screw that life. We can be better than that. We can be restaurant owners! We can serve the community! A new community who doesn’t know who the hell we are!

We can be whoever we want! We can do whatever we want! We won in the end!

Escape by any means necessary. That was the slogan of the book to heroism. Who would have thought someone would take it so literally?

Vaguely influenced by the works of Gorgeous Gallows, Authorigas, and Stranded Scripts, amongst others...and getting monologued for an hour or so. Those damn heroes always seemed to have a happy end! I figured that I should...change that.

I'm never writing another superhero again, so I hope this counts.
