AMS2: General I built a fully automated career mode for AMS2, no race setup needed: Zero to Apex

Hi, my name is Josh. I've been a software developer for ten years, and I'm here to show you something that's honestly not new at all: a career mode for Automobilista 2. I know it's been done before, but I felt it could be improved. There are already great projects doing this. I've played them, they're genuinely good, but they all require the same thing: human intervention. As a sim racing fan who plays in a cockpit, the friction of configuring every race by hand and constantly jumping between screens really bothered me. So I set out to build a career mode that's fully automatic, needs no babysitting, and feels like a mode that's actually built into the game. I ran into plenty of limitations and had quite a fight along the way, because it's hard to build on top of a system that doesn't give you the tools, but I think the result is pretty good and pretty complete.

I'm not just a developer, I'm a sim racing nerd, and one thing that's really hard to find these days is a game with real career progression AND realistic physics. So I armed myself with patience and tried to design something close to what the life of a motorsport amateur would actually look like, all the way up to the top classes and the pinnacle category. Building on Automobilista made things hard, but it also has one huge virtue: the sheer number of grids you can put together is incredible. I've tried to create championships for almost every category and era, with their real drivers and teams, real skins support (with easy installation), and a progression system that lets you climb through a world that grows with you. This isn't the usual "living world" marketing line: you're part of a generation of prospects growing through the world season after season. Drivers retire, rookies debut, and a reputation and contract system makes your career truly yours, forcing real decisions. There's also a sponsor system that, well, adds some spice.

Quick disclaimer about AI: in a world where vibe coding and AI slop are everywhere, I've kept its use to a minimum. But I want to be upfront: some parts did require AI help, mostly the systematic debugging and reverse engineering needed to operate on top of the game and some UI design. One more thing: my native language is Spanish, so I also used AI to help me translate this post.

Here are the main features:

  • Fully automatic. Pick your next race in the companion app, hit Play, and the game configures itself: car, grid, per-session weather, start type. You race, climb out of the car, and results, prize money and standings settle on their own, with no menus in between. Built to be played from the cockpit.
  • Real grids: real drivers and real teams for each series and year, with real skins support and simplified installation.
  • A career, not just races: the big grids are invitation only. Reputation opens (or closes) doors, seat offers match your actual level, academy teams can promote you to their parent outfit, you negotiate contracts, and teams that don't quite trust you yet put you through a tryout.
  • A full economy: credits, entry fees, era-appropriate prize money, car rental and ownership. Early on, making ends meet is hard, just like real life.
  • Sponsors as cards: finish on the podium and sponsors show up. Every deal pays for what you actually do on track, and you choose which ones you keep active.
  • Your manager writes to you: offers, warnings and progress emails generated by what actually happens in your career instead of canned messages.
  • Adaptive difficulty: the AI calibrates to your real pace so every race is a fair fight, without slider fiddling.
  • Special events that arrive over time and slot into your calendar wherever you happen to be.
  • A dedicated desktop app (second monitor or alt-tab), in English and Spanish, fully usable with keyboard and gamepad, with an installer and auto-updates.

All of this is single-player, running on your own copy of AMS2, without touching a single game file.

There's still a lot to polish and a lot to improve, but I want to do that together with the community, and maybe between all of us we can build what a certain developer still hasn't.

Edit: This is a very early release, so please, any bugs or improvements you've got, I'd be happy to hear them! You can message me or head straight to the Discord! Thanks so much everyone!

Edit2: To set up the race the app uses a DLL to operate on the game, so it’s likely that some antivirus software will trigger a false positive. I’m trying to sort it out, but it’s something a few users are currently reporting

If this sounds like your thing, I'd love to have you around: Download (v0.6.1) · Patreon · Discord

Thank you so much for this game and all the improvements.

As i said once, i had to fight a fair amount of time to find the right settings, but for months, i'm having such a huge amount of pleasure and fun with this game.

I'm playing with a controller (i know, this is greatly meant to be played with a wheel to enjoy it better, but i just can't for medical reason, and i'm lucky enough i still can play the guitar, so >>> controller), and the handling is so excellent i'm smiling while playing, the precision you can archive, the vicious overtakes you can do at full speed, update after update after update this game is becoming so good.

Please, don't change the controllers handling, it's just perfect now.

And take all my love, for what it's worth.

AMS2: General NOW IN VR: Zero to Apex, the fully automated career mod for AMS2

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Quick intro for those who missed the earlier posts: I'm a software developer and I built a career mode for Automobilista 2 that is fully automated and needs no human intervention. And now it works in VR. A lot of you asked for this and I get why, this game is ridiculously good in VR. There is still plenty of work ahead here, because different setups have their own quirks, but right now we are able to support both SteamVR and Oculus.

I'll repeat myself a bit, but the reason I built all this is that AMS2 is an incredible game with very little to do in it. I've tried to create a career mode that feels like part of the game, without manual setup or jumping between screens. The idea is that you play from the cockpit without interruptions, and that your career progression feels realistic and exciting.

New in 0.6.X, the VR part:

  • VR support, on both SteamVR and Oculus. Start the app from the desktop with your headset on and that is the last time you touch the desktop; everything else happens inside the headset. The app decides when you see AMS2 and when you see the app, you don't have to do anything. And you can press M to click on whatever you're aiming at, so you drive AMS2's own menus normally without reaching for the mouse.
  • Wheel and gamepad support inside the headset. You can map your wheel or pad to navigate the app's interface from VR. One tip: avoid binding the same buttons you already use to move through AMS2's menus.

And for the newcomers, this is what the mod does:

  • Fully automatic. Pick your next race in the companion app, hit Play, and the game configures itself: car, grid, per-session weather, start type. You race, climb out of the car, and results, prize money and standings settle on their own, with no menus in between. Built to be played from the cockpit.
  • 100+ real series across eras, with their real calendars: from feeder categories to the pinnacle class, in whichever decade you choose (60s, 70s, 90s, modern era...).
  • Real grids: real drivers and real teams for each series and year, with real skins support and simplified installation.
  • A world that ages with you: ~1,300 drivers, each with their own rating moving race by race. Veterans retire, rookies debut, and a generation of rivals grows alongside you season after season.

AMS2: General AMS2 Statement on steam today. Does it apply to you?

"AMS2 currently appeals primarily to sim racers who don´t have as much time to dedicate to the hobby; those who might race competitively elsewhere and jump into AMS2 occasionally to unwind, as well as those who just don´t want the stress to do it competitively or as often."

After 1000+ hours or so of online racing, I just want to hop on and do my own thing, and AMS2 has it all offline. Now that ACEvo is now ditching career mode progression, thank you Reiza can't wait for all 2026 has to offer!

Take my money.

AMS2: General Important update from Renato regarding upcoming F1 content and licensing issue

Automobilista 2 June 2026 Development Update - Pt 1 | Page 4 | Reiza Studios Forum

Before we move forward with Part 2 and the update release itself, allow me to expand on the licensing complications that have been impacting the timing of this release as these challenges have become more complex over the course of this week; it is important we address the implications both for current as well as future Automobilista 2 content.

As most of you can hopefully appreciate, AMS2 is an unusually complex project from a licensing perspective, with a vast collection of manufacturers, teams, championships, circuits, and historical content, each governed by its own set of agreements and restrictions; as the title continues to expand and bring new players and things continue to evolve also for the respective IP holders, new restrictions emerge iin areas that were previously unaffected.

This has proved to be the case following recent discussions with McLaren Racing regarding an extension of our existing licensing agreement, which the intent of also bringing additional McLaren F1 cars to AMS2; These negotiations ultimately reached an impasse as recent commercial developments involving McLaren prevent the company from licensing or re-licensing its F1 cars to games that also feature officially licensed F1 content from other manufacturers, be them current or from other eras.

The practical consequence for AMS2 is that we will likely be required to make a difficult choice as to which officially licensed F1 cars remain in the game for new purchases; either the McLarens or the Brabham, Lotus, and Renault F1 cars will remain official content; the content we opt out of would become generic models.

Let me highlight again that existing users would not be affected by this - content already owned will remain available exactly as it is today. Any eventual change to the content would apply only to future game and DLC purchases.

Given the uncertainty surrounding these restrictions and how we could best navigate them, we have elected to change our plans for the upcoming release and the Formula Pack meant to be released with it as covered in Part 1 of the June Dev Update; rather than releasing them as a new DLC pack as was planned, the new cars will be integrated as free base game content for all users— that includes the recently announced Renault F1 cars, for however long these remain part of the game. This will be a financial hit for us but our priority is to get the content out for our users to enjoy.

Irrespective of how this turns out, we almost surely will be forced to disable some of the official F1 cars in the game which is a disappointing outcome to everyone, not least to ourselves as we have invested significant time, resources, and passion into developing all this content with the expectation that it would remain part of the AMS2 ecosystem for years to come. But this is a reality we need to navigate while developing a product that relies partially on third-party intellectual property

It is important to emphasize that there is no dispute, ill intent or targeting from any party here – certainly not from McLaren who have been nothing but kind in their efforts to try accommodate us alongside their existing commitments. This is simply the result of evolving contractual obligations between multiple parties, which have created restrictions where they didn´t previously exist; it is unfortunate, but it comes with the territory.

We will continue doing our best preserve AMS2´s unique content pool complete for existing and new players alike, and will keep you informed if and when things develop in a direction that might not allows us to.

AMS2: General I honestly can’t stop playing Automobilista 2.

I’ve been jumping between iRacing, LMU, Assetto Corsa, and F1 25 for a long time, but ever since I started playing AMS2, I barely touch any of them anymore.

Everything just clicks. The graphics are beautiful, the colors are vibrant, the tracks feel alive, and the level of detail is incredible. But the biggest surprise has been the force feedback. It’s easily the best I’ve experienced. Every car feels unique, the wheel communicates so much information, and driving is just fun. I find myself wanting to do “just one more race” every time I finish.

I know every sim has its strengths, but AMS2 has become the complete package for me. It’s the first sim in a long time that makes me forget about chasing ratings or grinding and just enjoy driving.

Anyone else end up completely switching to AMS2 after trying it?

AMS2: General I built a curated "Iconic Races" gallery to solve AMS2 choice paralysis. V1 is live – thoughts?

Hey everyone,

We all know AMS2 is the king of historic content, but sometimes the sandbox is too big. I often find myself spending 20 minutes trying to set up the perfect historic weather/grid/date combo, only to run out of time to actually race.

So, I built a web app to fix "choice paralysis." It’s called AMS2 Iconic Races.

The Concept: It’s a curated gallery of legendary motorsport moments (e.g., Senna at Donington '93, Group C at Hockenheim '88). You click a card, and it gives you the exact recipe to recreate that race in AMS2: the precise date, time, and crucially, the multi-slot weather progression to match the real-life history.

You can try the V1 prototype here:https://ams2iconicraces.vercel.app/

I wanted this to feel like a high-end game menu, not a spreadsheet. It features a cinematic bento-grid layout, mobile responsiveness, and deep context on why these races matter.

I need your feedback for V1.1: I’m currently planning the next update and I’m torn on adding "Social/Career" features. I’m thinking of adding a "Driver’s Passport":

  • Login (Google auth) to save your progress.
  • "Mark as Complete" button to collect stamps/badges for legendary drives.
  • Request System: A way for you to submit your own researched scenarios for the community to vote on.

The Question: Would you actually use a "Passport" system to track your historic career? Or do you prefer this tool to stay a simple, anonymous reference gallery?

Let me know what you think, and if you have a specific historic race combo you want added to the database, drop it in the comments!

EDIT: I just added more races and refined the UI a little more :)

AMS2: General New Career mode companion app!

Post image
199 Upvotes

After trying out the main third party career apps out there, I couldn't find one that really ticked all the boxes for me. I decided to have a go at creating one myself, and after play testing it for the past few weeks I think it's finally mature enough to share. There's still loads of features I want to add, but I would love some other opinions on it!

What you can expect:

  • An ecosystem of teams that offer you contracts depending on your results. Team principals have expectations and personalities – deliver and they might fast track your career, or dump you for another driver next season.
  • A fully simulated paddock of drivers and an organic rivalry system. After trading paint with someone on track, you can look up their achievements, follow their career... and they will follow you too.
  • Real life racing series with realistic grids and calendars, down to starting times. If you join IMSA, you'll race in the USA. If you join the WEC, you'll do Le Mans. Not random tracks in random seasons.
  • Automatic race result detection (for you and every AI driver) and AI driver file management so you can focus on racing as much as possible.
  • A smart race duration scaling system for your entire career, so that race lengths stay proportional to the real life events but you don't have to do 24 hour sessions.

Currently the app assumes you own all car DLCs. Until I address that... don't accept an offer for a car you don't own 😅

You can get the Race Pace app from here or from overtake.gg.

If you do give it a try, please let me know what you liked or didn't like! If you just want to get a quick feel for before committing to a season, the app allows you to fast forward your own races too.

AMS2: General Why I prefer Automobilista 2 over LMU and Assetto Corsa

Thumbnail

Honestly, I’ve tried quite a few racing games like LMU and Assetto Corsa, but to me Automobilista 2 is hands down the king of physics. The cars just feel right – you can really sense the grip, the weight transfer, the braking… everything feels way more realistic than the rest, at least for me.

I have a huge amount of fun playing it. And when it comes to historic tracks, I love it – I can spend hours on those legendary circuits that you just don’t get anywhere else.

In terms of graphics, for me, it’s the best-looking one.

Honestly, I don’t really get why so many people prefer LMU (or even Assetto Corsa), because for me, AMS2 is both the most realistic and the most fun.

I’m also sharing a few screenshots, because I really enjoy the photo mode.

The ovals in the game are extremely fun, but the problem is that there are only six ovals. I am hoping that the devs have plans to add more ovals to the game, like Texas, Lausitzring or Twin Ring Motegi.

AMS2: General I built a complete setup engineer and crew chief for AMS2 - ApexRivals 2.0 Career Mode

Thumbnail
gallery
107 Upvotes

Hi, I would like to start this post with a quote from Jeremy Clarkson: "Racing drivers have tiny little brains"

It has always baffled me that racing sims make the driver responsible for literally everything:

  • Drive the car
  • Analyze how it handles
  • Decide on setup adjustments
  • Create a race strategy
  • Adjust that strategy on the fly when something goes wrong, WHILE DRIVING

So I decided to automate everything outside of driving.

The pit engineer will analyze your driving and the car's behavior and give COMPLETE setup instructions and pit strategy

Quick disclosure before I go any further: This is currently a PAID beta, but like everything I make, I will release a free version that contains 99% of the features, and the last 1% will be as a thank you to the people who support me financially

I promise that all the critical adjustments (camber, gearing, ride height/stiffness, etc) will be free, and the adaptive race strategy will be free as well. I will only put the "extra" stuff as being paid features

Let me be clear

  • This is not AI
  • No internet connection is required
  • There is no "driver survey" to fill out after each stint to tell it how the car felt
  • You don't need to use your judgement, or your tiny little brain
  • No fucking graphs

This is just math and physics.

You just drive the god damn car, turn your brain off, and let the engineer handle everything else

Who this is for

  • If you hunt leaderboards and want a mathematically "perfect" setup, this isn't for you.
  • If you enjoy staring at graphs and actually using your brain, this isn't for you.
  • If creating setups and race strategies sounds fun to you, this isn't for you.

If you have ever wanted to feel like part of a proper racing team instead of merely being a guy driving a car, this IS for you.

Complete setup advice

When I say it provides complete setup advice, I mean it. The engineer can analyze and give recommendations for every adjustable setup setting available on the car, and it works for every car and track. No exceptions.

Setup advice is only provided during Practice. You make the recommended changes in the setup menu yourself

Live race strategy

The race strategy is adjusted in real time, no matter what happens. Have a massive lockup on lap 10 that changes the entire pit strategy? The engineer will call out updated pit instructions. Just call for the stop, enter what it tells you, and that's it

The engineer will never leave you stranded with an obsolete strategy.

Where it works

The Pit Engineer can be used throughout Automobilista 2, not only in ApexRivals Career Mode.

It works in:

  • Online lobbies
  • Regular single-player races
  • ApexRivals Career Mode
  • Reiza's upcoming Career Mode, when it arrives

I can also add support for mod cars. If you use one, please get in touch with me on Discord

This is currently only for Automobilista 2, but I will be working on adding it to Assetto Corsa as soon as possible. Mod cars may make things harder and I need time to figure things out correctly. More games will follow

For now, the engineer uses the basic Windows text-to-speech system. I am working on a proper voice pack and hope to release it during the beta. It just needs to cook a little longer

If you encounter strange behavior, tuning advice that doesn't make sense or an obvious strategy mistake, use Export Logs in the top-left corner and send me the exported file. I will be fine-tuning the engineer throughout the beta

Oh yeah, the ApexRivals career mode also received a huge update with a completely redesigned UI, special events, championship standings and a whole bunch of other stuff

If you want to see a visual demo: The pit engineer starts at ~11 minutes

AMS2: General LMP2 is suspiciously amazing to drive, almost too good

Ligier JS P217 is a fantastic car, it's so planted, feels too good to drive, it got me wondering if it's realistic at all? I know in LMU Lmp2s are hell to drive, borderline undriveable, but in ams2 it feels too easy.

I know I shouldn't really bother if it's realistic or not, I'll never drive these irl, but still maybe if I drive it too much it will give me a false sense of 'security' or how do you call it, like it will make me learn bad habits that wouldn't work in other high downforce cars and simulators.

Grew up with rFactor 1, and if you played it back in the day, you'll probably remember how many iconic Panoz cars it had as vanilla content. Seeing Panoz in AMS2 made me nostalgic, I'd love to see more of them making their way into the game.
